Nintendo Switch 2 Storage Explained: Game Sizes, microSD Express Cards, and Space Management

Nintendo Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal UFS storage, but part of that capacity is reserved for the system, so the full 256 GB is not available for games. Nintendo’s current U.S. listings show Mario Kart World at 22.2 GB and Donkey Kong Bananza at 9 GB, illustrating how widely requirements can vary. To add space, use a separately sold microSD Express card; Switch 2 supports cards up to 2 TB. Downloaded software, updates, DLC, screenshots, and videos can use the card, while save data remains in the console’s System Memory.

Switch 2 storage at a glance

Question Answer
How much internal storage is included? 256 GB of UFS storage. Nintendo reserves part of it for system use, so usable space is lower.
What card standard is supported? microSD Express. A regular microSD card from the original Switch cannot store Switch 2 game data.
What is the largest supported card? Up to 2 TB, according to Nintendo’s compatibility guidance.
What can go on the card? Downloaded games, updates, downloadable content, screenshots, and captured video.
Where are saves kept? In Switch 2 System Memory. Save data cannot be copied to a microSD Express card.
Are cards required for every game? No. Nintendo says no individual game currently requires extra storage to play, although a game-key card requires a download and enough free space.
Can a USB hard drive expand storage? No. External USB storage is not currently supported for Switch 2 expansion.

These are Nintendo specifications and support answers available on U.S. pages checked October 13, 2026. Game file sizes and required free space can change when publishers release updates.

What the 256 GB internal capacity actually means

The console uses UFS storage rather than a removable game-storage module. Nintendo describes the capacity as eight times that of the original Nintendo Switch and says it is intended for game downloads, save data, and other content. The headline capacity is a hardware figure, not the amount you can fill with games.

“Nintendo Switch 2 comes with 256 GB of internal storage—8x the capacity of Nintendo Switch*—for keeping your game downloads, save data, and more.”

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo also notes that a portion of the internal storage is reserved for the operating system and other system functions. Because Nintendo does not publish a single guaranteed user-available figure in the specifications cited here, do not plan around having 256 GB free. Check the number shown on your own console instead:

  1. Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Review the displayed System Memory capacity and available space.

The available figure is the one that matters when you are deciding whether a particular download, update, or game-key-card installation will fit.

How much space do Switch 2 games need?

There is no standard Switch 2 game size. Download requirements depend on the game, its audio and video assets, whether it is a fully downloadable release or a game-key card, and later updates or downloadable content. Nintendo advises checking the individual eShop listing or the packaging for the physical version before buying.

Two Nintendo-published examples

Game Listed size Qualification
Mario Kart World 22.2 GB Nintendo U.S. eShop listing checked October 13, 2026. This is the listing’s current file-size figure, not a guarantee that future updates will leave it unchanged.
Donkey Kong Bananza 9 GB Nintendo U.S. eShop listing checked October 13, 2026. The requirement can change as software is updated.

The difference between these two listings is why a simple “number of games per console” estimate would be misleading. A library containing several 9 GB downloads has a very different footprint from one containing several 22.2 GB downloads, and patches can add to either figure. Some games also use a game-key card: the card authenticates the purchase, but the game data still has to be downloaded to the console or expansion card. You need enough free space for that download even though you own a physical card.

How to check before purchasing

  • For a digital purchase, open the game’s current Nintendo eShop listing and read the required storage figure.
  • For a physical release, check the storage information on the package.
  • Leave additional headroom for updates and DLC rather than treating the listed figure as a permanent upper limit.
  • For a game-key card, confirm that the console or microSD Express card has enough free space for the full download.

Do you need a microSD Express card immediately?

No. Nintendo says no individual game currently requires additional storage space to play. A console can therefore begin with its internal System Memory, particularly if you buy mostly cartridges, keep only a few digital games installed, and regularly remove captures. The need for expansion is a capacity decision, not a mandatory launch accessory.

Expansion becomes useful when several large downloads, patches, or DLC packages must remain installed at the same time. It is also relevant to game-key cards because the physical card does not contain the complete installation; the console still needs room to download the software. Check the title’s current requirement rather than assuming that a physical purchase avoids storage use.

How to expand Switch 2 storage

Expansion requires a microSD Express card sold separately. The “Express” designation is essential: Nintendo’s Switch 2 guidance does not make ordinary microSD or microSDXC cards suitable for storing Switch 2 software.

  • HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.

Choose the correct card

  • Look specifically for microSD Express on the card or its packaging.
  • Choose a capacity appropriate to your library; Nintendo supports cards up to 2 TB, but the maximum is not a requirement.
  • Do not buy a regular microSD card because it worked in the original Switch. Nintendo says older cards cannot store Switch 2 game data.
  • There is no established performance comparison among individual card brands or models in Nintendo’s published guidance, so the relevant compatibility check is the standard itself.

The card is a separate purchase, and Nintendo says licensed microSD Express cards are available through the Nintendo Store. No particular capacity is required for every owner, so compare the card’s capacity and Switch 2 compatibility rather than paying for the maximum by default.

Install and prepare the card

  1. Turn off the console or follow Nintendo’s current insertion instructions before opening the card slot.
  2. Insert the microSD Express card in the Switch 2 card slot.
  3. Allow the console to complete any first-use preparation or required system update shown on screen.
  4. Return to System Settings → Data Management to confirm available card space and inspect how content is allocated.

When a compatible card is inserted, Nintendo says it becomes the default location for downloaded software. The console still keeps save data in System Memory.

What cannot be used instead

An external USB hard drive is not currently supported as Switch 2 storage expansion. A regular microSD card is not an alternative for Switch 2 game data, even if it contains screenshots or software from an original Switch.

Where each kind of data is stored

Data type Possible location Important limitation
Downloaded games System Memory or a microSD Express card An inserted compatible card is the default location for downloaded software.
Software updates System Memory or microSD Express Updates consume space in addition to the base game’s listed size.
DLC System Memory or microSD Express Expansion content can add to the requirement shown for the original game.
Screenshots and captured video System Memory or microSD Express Captures can be exported to a computer or uploaded through the Nintendo Switch App before deletion.
Game save data System Memory It cannot be copied to a microSD Express card.

Why saves stay in System Memory

Moving a game to an expansion card does not move its progress. Save data remains associated with the console’s System Memory, so removing or replacing the card does not carry your saves with it. Nintendo Switch Online members may use Save Data Cloud for supported titles, but that service is a separate backup feature, not a way to store saves on the card.

What happens to an original Switch card

Nintendo says an ordinary microSD card used in the original Switch is not compatible with Switch 2 for game-data storage. There is a limited import function: screenshots and videos from an original Switch card may be imported to Switch 2 System Memory. That import capability should not be confused with general card compatibility or permission to run Switch 2 software from the old card.

Can you move software between System Memory and the card?

Downloaded software can use System Memory or a compatible microSD Express card, with the inserted card serving as the default location for downloaded software. The important distinction is that moving or deleting the installation does not move the associated save to the card. If you remove the card, the software stored there is unavailable until the card is reinserted, while the console’s save data remains in System Memory.

When replacing a card, plan for the software library rather than the saves: Nintendo recommends using one card, and software spread across multiple cards cannot later be combined. Redownloading may be necessary after a card change, so verify your Nintendo Account access and leave time for downloads before a trip or offline play session.

Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

What to do when storage is full

Check the actual space first

Use System Settings → Data Management before deleting anything. The screen shows whether downloads, updates, captures, or other content are consuming the available capacity. Check the game’s current eShop listing or packaging as well, because the amount shown there may have changed since launch.

Delete software without losing progress

Nintendo states that deleting downloaded software data does not delete its save data. You can remove a game to reclaim its installation space and redownload it later, provided you have access to the purchase or game-key card. This is useful when a large title is not currently being played but its progress must be retained.

Clear captures separately

Screenshots and videos can occupy substantial space over time. Nintendo recommends uploading captures to the Nintendo Switch App or transferring them to a computer, then deleting the originals from the console. This recovers capture space without touching game installations or saves.

Use one card rather than building a collection

Nintendo recommends using a single expansion card. Software spread across multiple cards cannot later be combined into one card. If you replace a card, plan for the software on the old card to be moved or redownloaded rather than expecting the console to merge both libraries automatically.

How to choose an expansion size

The right capacity depends on the sizes of the games you actually buy, not on a universal game count. Nintendo’s examples range from 9 GB to 22.2 GB, and both figures can grow with updates. Internal storage is suitable for a smaller rotating library, while a microSD Express card reduces the need to delete large downloads when you keep many games installed.

Your usage pattern Practical approach
Mostly physical cartridges, few downloads Start with System Memory and monitor free space. Updates and DLC still count, even when the base game is on a cartridge.
Several digital games played regularly Add a microSD Express card before the internal storage becomes a recurring bottleneck.
Large digital library or many game-key cards Choose a higher-capacity compatible card, remembering that Nintendo’s maximum supported capacity is 2 TB.
Large screenshot or video archive Use a card for captures, and periodically export them to the Nintendo Switch App or a computer.

Do not assume that buying the largest card is necessary. The sensible choice is the capacity that leaves room for updates and the games you expect to keep installed, while staying within Nintendo’s microSD Express requirement.

Common mistakes and their fixes

“The console has 256 GB, so I can use all 256 GB.”

Fix: System software uses part of the internal storage. Check the available-space figure in Data Management instead of relying on the headline capacity.

“My old Switch microSD card should work.”

Fix: Use a microSD Express card for Switch 2 game data. The old card may be useful only for importing original Switch screenshots and videos through Nintendo’s limited transfer function.

“A physical game never needs storage.”

Fix: Check whether the release is a game-key card. Nintendo says game-key cards require downloading the game data, so free space is still necessary.

“I can move saves to the card to free internal space.”

Fix: Save data remains in System Memory and cannot be copied to the card. Remove or redownload software instead, and use supported Save Data Cloud features if you need an additional backup.

“I can combine two partly filled cards later.”

Fix: Keep software on one card where possible. Nintendo says software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined.

Bottom line for buying and managing storage

Switch 2’s 256 GB internal UFS storage is a substantial increase over the original Switch, but it is not 256 GB of game space because Nintendo reserves part for the system. Current Nintendo listings show that game requirements vary materially: Mario Kart World is listed at 22.2 GB and Donkey Kong Bananza at 9 GB. Check each title before purchase and allow for updates.

When internal space is insufficient, add a microSD Express card—up to 2 TB is supported. Use one compatible card for downloaded software, updates, DLC, and captures; keep in mind that saves stay in System Memory, ordinary original-Switch microSD cards cannot store Switch 2 game data, and USB hard drives are not supported for expansion.

Where is game save data stored?

Game save data stays in Switch 2 System Memory. It cannot be copied to a microSD Express card, even when the game installation is stored there.

Are there games that require a microSD Express card?

Nintendo says no individual game currently requires additional storage to play. However, a game-key card requires downloading its game data, so the console or card must have enough free space.

Can I also use an external USB drive?

No. Nintendo does not currently support an external USB hard drive for Switch 2 storage expansion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will my original Switch microSD card work in Switch 2?

An ordinary card from the original Switch cannot store Switch 2 game data. Nintendo does support importing screenshots and videos from an original Switch card into Switch 2 System Memory, which is a limited transfer function.

What happens if I delete a downloaded game?

Deleting the downloaded software frees installation space without deleting its save data. You can redownload the software later when space is available.

Can I use multiple microSD Express cards and combine them later?

Nintendo recommends using one card. Software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined into a single card automatically.

How do I know whether a game will fit?

Check the current Nintendo eShop listing for a digital game or the packaging for a physical release, then leave extra room for updates and DLC. Use System Settings → Data Management to check the console’s actual available space.

The Bottom Line

Switch 2 includes 256 GB of internal UFS storage, with some reserved for system use. Game sizes vary, so check each Nintendo listing and leave room for updates. If you need more capacity, choose one separately sold microSD Express card—up to 2 TB is supported. Downloads, updates, DLC, and captures can use the card, but saves remain in System Memory and older Switch microSD cards and USB drives are not substitutes.
