You can load a virtual game card on a linked console so every user there can play offline; lend an eligible card to one member of your Nintendo Account family group for up to 14 days; or use an online license, which lets only the purchasing account play on an internet-connected console. These are separate systems, not interchangeable names for the same kind of sharing.
The three ways to share a digital Switch 2 game
Nintendo treats an eShop game or downloadable content (DLC) purchase as a virtual game card. Loading that card onto a console gives that console an offline copy license that other users on the same console can use. Lending temporarily moves the card to a family-group member’s console. An online license leaves the card unloaded and checks the purchasing account’s entitlement over the internet.

Nintendo describes the loaded-card behavior in its Virtual Game Card Guide: once loaded, a game or DLC can be played without an internet connection, and other users on that console can play it too.

Loading a virtual game card on a console
What loading provides
Loading is the closest equivalent to putting a cartridge into a console. The card is associated with the console, so the purchasing account does not have to be the user who starts the game. This is the method to use when several profiles on one Switch 2 need access, or when you want the game to work during travel or an outage.

Two-console limit
One Nintendo Account can link up to two Switch or Switch 2 consoles for virtual game cards, according to Nintendo’s current guidance. The card itself is loaded on only one console at a time. To move it, both systems must be powered on or in sleep mode and connected to the internet while the transfer is arranged. After the card finishes loading on the destination console, internet access is no longer required to play.
The two-console rule is about consoles linked to the purchasing account; it does not mean two consoles can simultaneously run the same loaded card. If a game needs to be available on a different system, move the card before playing there.
Who can use a loaded card
Every user profile on the console with the loaded card can play the game or DLC. This is broader than an online license, which is tied to the purchaser. It also means you do not need to lend the card to another profile that already uses the same console.

Lending a virtual game card to family
Eligibility and preparation
Lending is for members of the same Nintendo Account family group, not for any Nintendo user you choose. The title must also be eligible; Nintendo excludes some software, including some games supplied through a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Check the individual game’s current status in Nintendo’s support guidance before promising a loan.
The lender’s and borrower’s consoles must be close to one another and online when the lending transaction is initiated. The people do not have to remain together for the rest of the loan. Once the card is received and loaded, the borrower can generally play offline.
How the 14-day loan works
- Put the lender’s and borrower’s consoles near each other and connect both to the internet.
- Use Nintendo’s virtual-game-card lending controls to select an eligible card and the family-group member who will receive it.
- Let the consoles complete the transfer and load the card on the borrower’s console.
- The borrower plays on that console for up to 14 days. At the end of the period, the card is automatically returned to the lender.
The exact menus can change with system software, so use Nintendo’s current Lending Virtual Game Cards to a Member of Your Family Group instructions for the on-screen labels in your region.
What the lender and borrower can do
- The lender cannot play a virtual game card while it is lent. Nintendo Support Singapore states that a lent card cannot be played until it is returned.
- The borrower can use the card only on the borrowing console.
- The borrower cannot lend that card onward.
- The card’s save data does not travel with the loan; progress remains on the console where it was created.
How many cards can be out at once?
Nintendo’s regional pages describe the limits with slightly different wording. The US overview says an account may lend up to three virtual game cards at a time. Singapore guidance says each family-group member can lend one card and that up to three people may borrow different cards simultaneously. In either description, a recipient console can receive only one card at a time, and an individual borrower can borrow only one card at a time. A borrower therefore cannot build a temporary library by collecting several loans on one console.

Online licenses: useful for the purchaser, not a family-sharing workaround
An online license is a separate access mode for the Nintendo Account that bought the game. It lets that account play its digital purchases on an internet-connected Switch or Switch 2 without loading the virtual game card. This can help when the account is associated with more than two consoles, because the account can verify its entitlement online rather than moving a card between the two linked systems.
The restriction is decisive: only the purchasing account can use the online-license method. Other profiles on that console and other family-group members cannot use the game through that license. If several people need access, load the virtual card on their console or use the lending system when the title qualifies.
Save data, DLC and physical copies
Save data stays on the console
A virtual game card is a license to use software, not a container for your progress. Save data remains on the console that created it, including when the game is lent to another family member. To move progress, Nintendo points users to its Save Data Transfer feature or Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud where the game and subscription support those options. A recipient should not expect a borrowed card to include the lender’s campaign, settings or unlocked content.
DLC follows the card in digital purchases
When a base game and its purchased DLC are part of the same virtual game card, the DLC travels with that card during a loan. A borrower receives the associated downloadable content for the loan period, subject to the game’s compatibility.
Physical base game, digital DLC
If the base game is a physical cartridge and the DLC was purchased separately, the DLC can be managed separately as a virtual game card. Lending the DLC does not supply the physical base game. The borrower still needs the cartridge, or another valid license for the base software, to launch the content.
Switch and Switch 2 compatibility
Switch 2-only software
Switch 2-exclusive games require Switch 2 hardware. Lending does not make an original Switch capable of running software designed only for the newer console.
Cross-generation lending
Compatible games can be lent between Switch 2 and the original Switch. However, Switch 2 software cannot be lent to an original Switch. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance explains the distinction for individual titles.

Switch 2 Edition games on an original Switch
A Switch 2 Edition used on an original Switch provides the corresponding Switch version, not the Switch 2 Edition additions. Enhanced graphics, extra modes or other Edition-specific features require Switch 2 hardware. Check the game’s compatibility information rather than assuming that a shared card delivers identical features on both generations.
Common scenarios and the right choice
Two people use one console
Load the virtual game card on that console. All local users can play, and the game can run offline after loading.
Family members use separate consoles
Use lending if everyone is in the same Nintendo Account family group, the title is eligible and a 14-day loan is sufficient. Remember that the lender loses access for the duration.
The purchaser owns more than two consoles
Use an online license on an internet-connected console for the purchaser’s own play, or move the virtual card among the two linked consoles. Online licensing does not expand sharing to other profiles.
You need a game for a short trip
Load the card before leaving and verify that it starts while the console is offline. A loan can also be played offline after the initial nearby transfer, but the 14-day return deadline still applies.

- The game is unavailable to another profile: confirm that the virtual card is loaded on that console. An online license only authenticates the purchasing account.
- The card will not move: put both consoles on or in sleep mode, connect them to the internet and retry the transfer.
- A family member cannot receive the game: verify that both accounts are in the same family group and that the title is lendable. Membership-included software and other excluded titles cannot be forced into the lending system.
- The borrower expects the lender’s save: explain that save data stays on the original console. Use Save Data Transfer or supported cloud backup instead.
- A Switch 2 Edition lacks its extras: check the hardware. An original Switch can run the corresponding Switch content where supported, but not the Switch 2 Edition additions.
- The loan ended unexpectedly: loans automatically return after 14 days. The lender must lend the card again, subject to the title and account limits.
What Nintendo’s own guidance confirms
Nintendo’s How to Play Your Games Across Multiple Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch Consoles page covers online-license behavior and multi-console use. Its UK virtual game card overview states the two-console association limit. For which users can play a loaded purchase, see Can Other Players Use Games I’ve Purchased on Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch?. Rules can vary by software and may be updated, so the game’s current support entry should control when a general explanation and a title-specific notice differ.
