Nintendo Switch 2 Compatibility: Which Existing Games Need the New Console

Most Nintendo Switch games do not need to be bought again for Nintendo Switch 2. The new console runs compatible physical game cards and digital purchases linked to your Nintendo Account. You can insert a compatible card or redownload a digital purchase, then move save data and settings with Nintendo’s System Transfer process.

Compatibility is not universal, however. Nintendo warns that some games may be unsupported, partly functional, or dependent on an update. A Switch 2 Edition can also add graphics, performance, modes, or features that work only on the new hardware. Check each title in Nintendo’s live compatibility index before buying a console, game, or upgrade.

The short answer: do you need to rebuy your Switch games?

Usually, no. Nintendo’s official guidance says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital games released for the original Nintendo Switch. A physical owner can insert the game card into Switch 2. A digital owner can redownload purchases associated with the Nintendo Account used on the new console.

That statement has an important qualifier: “compatible” is determined title by title. Hardware differences can cause delayed support, in-game problems, partial functionality, or complete non-support. A game that launches on Switch 2 may still need an update, an accessory, or a paid upgrade pack to deliver the experience advertised for the new console.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Think of compatibility as three separate questions:

  • Will the original Switch version launch and remain playable?
  • Does it need a free update or paid upgrade for Switch 2 improvements?
  • Do its controllers, camera functions, or other accessories work with your setup?

Nintendo does not publish one authoritative total for all compatible games. Its title-level compatibility index is the relevant source, and Nintendo says testing and updates can change a game’s status.

What “needs Switch 2” actually means

A game can be associated with Switch 2 in several different ways. Distinguishing them prevents an unnecessary purchase or an unpleasant surprise after you transfer your library.

Switch 2-exclusive games

Some releases are made for Switch 2 and do not have an original-Switch version. Those titles require the new console by definition. They are separate from backward-compatible Switch games and from Switch 2 Editions.

Switch 2 Editions

A Switch 2 Edition is the original Switch game bundled with an upgrade pack. The base game remains the same purchase, while the pack adds features such as improved visuals, smoother performance, or new modes. Nintendo states that these added features can only be played on Switch 2.

If you already own the physical or digital base game, you can buy the upgrade pack separately when one is offered. The original version may still run on an original Switch, but the Switch 2 Edition enhancements will not.

Unsupported or partly functional original versions

Nintendo’s compatibility listing can identify games that do not work, have in-game issues, or require an update. In those cases, Switch 2 may not provide a complete version of the original experience. Nintendo also warns that some support decisions are delayed while testing continues, so a listing can change after launch.

How physical and digital ownership carries over

Physical game cards

Insert a compatible Nintendo Switch game card into Switch 2 and launch it from the HOME Menu. The card remains your proof of ownership, so you need it inserted whenever you play unless the title supports a separate digital entitlement. If Nintendo’s listing identifies an update, install it before judging performance or functionality.

Digital purchases

Sign in on Switch 2 with the Nintendo Account that bought the game. Nintendo says linked-account purchases can be redownloaded on the new console. A digital game may still need a software update, and any Switch 2 Edition content or upgrade pack is separate unless Nintendo specifically includes it with your entitlement.

Save data and settings

Nintendo’s System Transfer feature can move save data and settings, subject to Nintendo’s transfer rules. Transfer eligibility and the treatment of individual data can vary, so complete the console’s transfer instructions rather than assuming that every local file moves automatically. Keep the original console available until you have verified that your saves open correctly on Switch 2.

How to check one game before you buy or transfer it

  1. Identify your copy. Note whether you own a physical card or a digital purchase, and which Nintendo Account owns the digital version.
  2. Search Nintendo’s live compatibility index. Look up the exact game, not just the franchise. Different editions, releases, and regions can have different requirements.
  3. Read the result, not only the headline. Check whether Nintendo marks the game as playable, reports in-game issues, or says that an update is needed. Treat an unsupported or partly functional notice as a stop sign unless you accept the limitation.
  4. Open the game’s store or product page. Look for a free Switch 2 update, a paid upgrade pack, or a separately sold Switch 2 Edition.
  5. Check feature requirements. Confirm whether the game needs original Joy-Con, a camera, a particular control method, or another accessory that behaves differently on Switch 2.
  6. Check your region. Review the local store page for availability and price. Nintendo’s compatibility information and upgrade availability can vary by region.
  7. Check again immediately before purchase. Nintendo says testing and software updates can change support, so an older result is not a permanent guarantee.

Compatibility statuses and what they mean in practice

Status or notice What you can expect What to do
Playable The original game is listed as working on Switch 2. Install any available update and test your normal controller and save setup.
In-game issues The game launches, but Nintendo has identified a problem affecting part of the experience. Read the title-specific note before deciding whether the limitation is acceptable.
Update required The game needs software data before compatibility is available or complete. Connect Switch 2 to the internet, install the update, and restart the game.
Unsupported or partially compatible Some or all functionality may be unavailable because of hardware or software differences. Do not assume a purchase or transfer will produce the original experience; check for a newer edition or alternative version.
Status under continued testing Nintendo has not finalized support or may revise the result later. Recheck the compatibility index before purchasing hardware or an upgrade.

Switch 2 Editions and upgrade packs

The upgrade-pack model lets an existing owner keep the original game while paying only for selected Switch 2 additions. The pack is available for select titles, not for every compatible game. It can add higher-resolution assets, improved frame rates, new features, or additional modes; the exact contents are title-specific.

Owners of the original physical or digital game can purchase an eligible pack separately. Some packs are benefits of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo specifically lists the upgrade packs for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom among those membership benefits, provided you own the corresponding base game.

Original game Switch 2 Edition listed by Nintendo Additional content or change How ownership works
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Switch 2 Edition enhancements; exact feature list and local price are not stated here. Existing owners can use the upgrade route; the upgrade pack is listed as an Expansion Pack benefit for eligible members.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Switch 2 Edition enhancements; exact feature list and local price are not stated here. Existing owners can use the upgrade route; the upgrade pack is listed as an Expansion Pack benefit for eligible members.
Super Mario Party Jamboree Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV Switch 2 Edition features plus Jamboree TV content. Check the product page for the required base game, upgrade availability, and regional price.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World Switch 2 Edition features plus Star-Crossed World content. Check the product page for the required base game, upgrade availability, and regional price.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Switch 2 Edition enhancements; exact feature list and local price are not stated here. Check the product page for edition and upgrade terms in your region.

The names above come from Nintendo’s published Switch 2 game listings. They are examples, not a complete list. A compatible game without a Switch 2 Edition can still run normally, but there is no reason to expect Edition-only improvements.

Accessories can determine whether a “compatible” game feels complete

Original Joy-Con controllers

Original Joy-Con pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but Nintendo says they cannot attach directly to the new console. If you need to charge them while playing or storing them, use a compatible charging grip or charging stand. This matters for games designed around detachable Joy-Con, tabletop play, or motion controls.

USB-C cameras and GameChat features

Some GameChat or camera-enabled features require a compatible USB-C camera. A game can therefore be listed as compatible while a particular camera function remains unavailable until you add the supported accessory. Check the game’s feature notes and the camera requirement before assuming every mode works out of the box.

Other control assumptions

Review any title-specific notice for unusual control schemes, local multiplayer arrangements, or accessories carried over from the original console. Compatibility describes the software’s status; it does not guarantee that every peripheral in your existing setup attaches, charges, or behaves identically.

Choosing between the original version and a Switch 2 Edition

Your situation Most practical choice Why
You already own a listed compatible game and only want to keep playing it. Transfer the save and use your existing physical card or redownload the digital copy. A compatible base game normally does not require a second purchase.
You want higher visual quality, smoother performance, or new modes. Compare the title’s free update, paid upgrade pack, or Switch 2 Edition. Enhancements are title-specific and run only on Switch 2.
You have Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack and own an eligible base game. Check whether Nintendo lists that title’s upgrade pack as a membership benefit. Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are specifically listed benefits; other games may not be.
Your game has an in-game issue or unsupported notice. Wait for a listed update, choose a supported edition, or keep using the original Switch. Buying Switch 2 alone does not remove a compatibility limitation.
Your game depends on Joy-Con attachment or a camera. Budget for the required grip, stand, or USB-C camera. The software may run while a physical accessory feature remains unavailable.

Troubleshooting common compatibility problems

The game does not appear after signing in

Verify that Switch 2 uses the Nintendo Account that purchased the digital game. If you own a card, insert it and check that the console recognizes the cartridge. A different account or a missing card can look like a compatibility failure.

The game starts but reports a problem

Return to Nintendo’s title entry and read the in-game-issues note. Install every available software update, then restart the console. If the listing still identifies a limitation, treat it as a known compatibility condition rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.

The upgrade is missing

Confirm that you own the matching base game and are viewing the correct regional store page. A Switch 2 Edition or upgrade pack is not automatically included with every original purchase. Where Nintendo lists an Expansion Pack benefit, make sure the membership and base-game ownership are on the account being used.

Joy-Con features do not work as expected

Pair the original Joy-Con wirelessly and use a compatible charging grip or stand when charging is necessary. If a feature requires the controllers to physically attach to the console, that arrangement is not available with original Joy-Con on Switch 2.

A camera or GameChat mode is unavailable

Check whether the mode requires a compatible USB-C camera. The console and game can be compatible while the camera-dependent function remains unavailable without that accessory.

What can change after launch

Compatibility is a living list rather than a one-time certification. Nintendo’s official guidance allows for delayed support, later testing, and updates that alter a title’s status. Recheck the listing when a game receives a major patch, when you change regions, or before purchasing a Switch 2 Edition.

There is also a difference between software availability and enhancement availability. A base game may remain playable without an upgrade pack, while the Switch 2 Edition’s new visuals or modes remain exclusive to the new console. Read both the compatibility result and the product page so you know which part of the experience you are buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision rule

If your only goal is to continue playing an existing game, start with Nintendo’s compatibility entry; do not buy a second copy until the listing says the original version is unsupported. If the game is compatible, transfer your data, redownload or insert the card, and install the required update.

If you want technical improvements or new content, compare the base game with its Switch 2 Edition or upgrade pack. Confirm whether the upgrade is free, paid, or included with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, then check accessories and regional availability. For a title marked unsupported or partly functional, the new console is not a guaranteed remedy; wait for an update, use a supported edition, or continue on the original hardware.
