Nintendo Switch 2 Buying Guide: Bundles, Accessories, and What You Actually Need

For most buyers, start with the Nintendo Switch 2 console and the game you actually want. The system already includes a pair of Joy-Con 2 controllers and a Switch 2 dock, so a second controller, dock, case, or screen protector is optional. The one add-on with a clear compatibility requirement is storage: buy a microSD Express card if you expect your digital library to outgrow the console’s internal space. Compare any bundle with the current local price of its individual contents before assuming it saves money.

What you get in the Nintendo Switch 2 box

The standard Switch 2 system is a complete console package for handheld and TV play. Nintendo’s accessory catalog identifies the Switch 2 dock as part of the system, and Joy-Con 2 controllers are supplied with the console. You do not need to purchase either item to start playing. Confirm the exact contents on the retailer’s listing, because regional packages and promotional bundles can differ.

Item Included with the console? What it means for your purchase
Switch 2 console Yes The main system and handheld display.
Joy-Con 2 controllers Yes Enough for standard handheld use and supported multiplayer setups.
Switch 2 dock Yes Required for TV play; you do not need to buy a second dock for a first setup.
Power and video cables Check the regional listing Verify the box contents and connector requirements where you live.
microSD Express card No Optional storage expansion for downloaded games.
Carrying case or screen protector No Buy only if you travel with the console or want extra physical protection.

That distinction prevents the most common overspend: buying a controller or dock before deciding whether your household actually needs one. The included Joy-Con 2 are the default control solution; extra hardware should solve a specific problem rather than fill out a checklist.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Console only or bundle: how to make the decision

A bundle is worthwhile when every included item matches your plan. It is not automatically a bargain. Prices, stock, game inclusion, retailer discounts and regional contents change, so compare the bundle’s current total with the standalone console plus the game or accessory you would otherwise buy.

Use this three-part comparison

  1. Record the current local prices. Check the console-only listing and the exact bundle in the country where you will buy. Do not use launch-era prices as a reference; Nintendo retail pricing changed in some markets effective September 1, 2026, and some retailers may temporarily show older prices.
  2. Value only what you would purchase. A game you already own, a duplicate accessory, or a digital title you would never play has little practical value to you, even if the advertised bundle total looks lower.
  3. Check availability and format. Confirm whether the game is a physical card, a download code, or a console-specific edition, and check whether the bundle is actually in stock. A theoretical saving is irrelevant if the item cannot be delivered in your region.
Buying situation Usually the better starting point Why
You already know which game you want Console plus that game, or a bundle containing that exact game It is easy to compare like-for-like value.
You are undecided about games Console only You avoid paying for a title that may not suit you.
The bundle includes a wanted game at a small price difference Bundle The included game can justify the extra cost when it matches your plans.
The bundle includes an unwanted controller or case Console only Unused extras should not be counted as savings.
Stock is limited or the price is promotional Whichever in-stock option has the better current total Retail prices and availability are time-sensitive.

Storage: the add-on most digital buyers should consider

Switch 2 is designed exclusively for microSD Express cards for game-storage expansion. Look for “Express” or “EX” on the product listing and on the card itself. A conventional microSD card is not the expansion purchase for downloaded Switch 2 games.

Nintendo says an ordinary microSD card can be used with Switch 2 only to view or import screenshots and videos captured on a Nintendo Switch. It does not provide the game-storage function you are seeking. The compatibility explanation is in Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 compatibility guide.

Choosing capacity without overbuying

There is no single capacity that fits every player. Estimate the number of large digital games you expect to keep installed, add room for updates and future purchases, and then compare current prices in your market. Someone who mainly buys physical cards may need little expansion; an all-digital household should plan for substantially more headroom.

  • NEXT GEN GAMING: Works with Nintendo Switch 2.
  • READY FOR TOMORROW. Ready for future products with a PCIe-NVMe interface; performs at UHS-I speeds with microSD UHS-I and UHS-II devices.
  • EXPONENTIALLY FASTER PERFORMANCE. Up to 4.4 times faster transfer speeds than our fastest microSD UHS-I cards [9]. • DURABILITY YOU CAN COUNT ON: Cards are waterproof, temperature-proof, humidity-proof, drop-proof, shock-proof, magnetic-proof, x-ray proof, and wear-out proof [5].
  • HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.
  • Buy a card explicitly identified as microSD Express, not merely “microSDXC” or “Switch compatible.”
  • Check the card’s stated capacity, because storage available to games is lower than the printed headline capacity after formatting and system use.
  • Compare current local pricing rather than importing a card whose warranty, shipping cost or return policy is unclear.
  • Install the card while the system is off and follow Nintendo’s on-screen formatting instructions. Formatting erases existing data on the card, so back up anything you need first.

If you already own conventional microSD cards from the original Switch, keep them for their supported screenshot and video-transfer use, but do not count them as Switch 2 game expansion.

Controllers: what is included and what is worth adding

Joy-Con 2 are included, so an extra controller is a preference purchase. Consider one if you regularly play docked, want a traditional two-stick gamepad, or need more controllers for local multiplayer.

Switch 2 Pro Controller

The dedicated Switch 2 Pro Controller is a distinct model. Nintendo identifies its C button and GL/GR rear buttons as model-specific features. Those controls can matter in games that support them, but the controller is not required to operate the console. Buy it for a preferred docked-control layout or for the additional inputs, not because the box is missing a controller.

Original Switch Pro Controller

Nintendo says the original Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Switch 2. If you already own one, test its battery and pairing before buying another gamepad. Wireless pairing does not turn it into the Switch 2 model: it will not provide the newer controller’s C, GL or GR controls.

Original Joy-Con

Original Joy-Con can also pair wirelessly, but they cannot physically attach to the Switch 2 console. They must be charged with an original Switch or a compatible charging accessory. This makes them useful as spare wireless controllers, not as drop-in replacements for the Joy-Con 2 attached to the system.

Nintendo’s model differences are summarized in its Switch 2 and original Switch differences guide. Independent accessory coverage also treats a dedicated Pro Controller as a comfort and control choice rather than a requirement: TechRadar Gaming’s Switch 2 accessory guide.

Dock, charger and old Switch accessories

The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2. Plan to use the dock supplied with the new console for TV mode.

The original Switch AC adapter has a narrower carry-over role: Nintendo says it can charge Switch 2 when connected directly to the console, but it cannot provide TV mode through the Switch 2 dock. If you move between two homes or keep a charger in a travel bag, a separate compatible adapter may be convenient, but do not assume the old adapter replaces the new dock power setup.

Original Joy-Con accessories are not universally compatible with Joy-Con 2. Grips, wheels, charging products and other shaped accessories may depend on the controller’s physical dimensions and electrical connections. Check each product against Nintendo’s compatibility information rather than relying on a generic “Switch compatible” label.

Old accessory Switch 2 result Practical advice
Original Switch dock Not compatible Use the Switch 2 dock for TV play.
Original Switch AC adapter Charges the console directly; does not provide TV mode through the Switch 2 dock Useful as a spare direct-charge adapter, not a dock replacement.
Original Switch Pro Controller Pairs wirelessly Reuse it if you accept the older button layout.
Original Joy-Con Pair wirelessly; do not attach Use as spare wireless controllers and charge them with compatible old hardware.
Original Joy-Con-shaped accessories Some are incompatible Verify the exact accessory model before reusing it.
Original Switch case or protector May not fit Choose a product explicitly made for Switch 2.

Cases and screen protection: choose for how you travel

A Switch 2-specific carrying case and screen protector are sensible optional purchases for anyone who transports the console. The larger system may not fit products designed around the original Switch’s dimensions, so “fits Switch” is not enough—look for explicit Switch 2 compatibility.

For handheld-only travel

Choose a compact case that protects the console, Joy-Con 2 and a few game cards. Nintendo’s Switch 2 case description says it holds up to six game cards. This is the practical option for commuting, school, holidays and everyday storage when you leave the dock at home.

For moving a complete TV setup

Nintendo also lists a larger all-in-one case that can carry the console, dock, Joy-Con 2, cables and up to six game cards. It is useful when the docked setup travels between rooms or homes, but it is unnecessary bulk for someone who plays almost exclusively in handheld mode.

Screen protector considerations

Buy a protector cut for Switch 2, not an original Switch screen. Install it in a dust-free area, clean the display first, and align the protector before pressing it down. A protector reduces scratches from bags and docks; it does not make the screen indestructible, so keep the console away from loose keys and grit.

Nintendo lists the official case and protector options in its accessory catalog. The compatibility warning about original Switch cases and protectors is also reflected in the TechRadar Gaming accessory guide.

What to buy for different play styles

Mostly handheld, mostly physical games

  • Console with its included Joy-Con 2 and dock.
  • Switch 2-specific case if the console leaves home.
  • Screen protector if it will ride in a bag.
  • MicroSD Express only when your digital downloads require more space.

Mostly docked, single-player

  • Console and the included dock.
  • Optional Switch 2 Pro Controller for a traditional gamepad feel.
  • MicroSD Express if you download several large titles.
  • No second dock unless you need one at another fixed location and have confirmed availability and price.

Family or local multiplayer

  • Start with the included Joy-Con 2 and check the games’ controller requirements.
  • Add controllers only for the number of simultaneous players your chosen games support.
  • Consider a charging solution that matches the exact controller models you own.
  • Do not assume original Joy-Con accessories will fit Joy-Con 2.

Frequent travel with TV play

  • Use the supplied Switch 2 dock at home.
  • Choose the all-in-one case if you regularly carry the dock, cables and controllers.
  • Keep a compatible charging arrangement for the destination; the original adapter can charge the console directly but cannot run TV mode through the Switch 2 dock.

A purchase checklist that avoids incompatible gear

  1. Choose the game format. Decide whether your first games will be physical cards, downloads or a mixture. This determines how urgently you need expansion storage.
  2. Check the console package. Confirm that the listing includes Joy-Con 2 and a Switch 2 dock, and note any regional cable or power details.
  3. Compare bundle math. Add the current console-only price to the price of the exact game or accessory you would buy. Subtract value for anything unwanted or duplicated.
  4. Verify storage branding. For game expansion, select microSD Express or a card marked “EX.” Reject ordinary microSD listings that only promise compatibility with the original Switch.
  5. Audit old hardware. Keep an original Pro Controller if wireless pairing meets your needs; keep original Joy-Con as wireless spares only. Do not plan around the original dock.
  6. Match protection to dimensions. Select a case and screen protector that name Switch 2 specifically. Decide between a compact handheld case and an all-in-one TV-setup case.
  7. Recheck region and returns. Confirm the seller, warranty, delivery territory, current price and return terms immediately before paying. These details can change after a guide or listing was published.

Common buying mistakes and fixes

Buying a normal microSD card for game storage

Symptom: the card is labeled microSD or microSDXC but not Express, and the listing does not state Switch 2 game-storage support. Fix: return or repurpose it for supported media-transfer tasks and buy a clearly labeled microSD Express card.

Assuming the old dock will work

Symptom: you plan to move the original dock to a second room. Fix: budget for a Switch 2-compatible dock if one is officially available in your region; otherwise use the supplied dock and do not count the old one as a TV solution.

Expecting original Joy-Con to slide onto the new console

Symptom: the controllers pair wirelessly but cannot attach. Fix: use Joy-Con 2 for attached handheld play and reserve original Joy-Con for wireless use with a charging method that supports them.

Counting every bundle extra as savings

Symptom: the bundle costs less than the advertised combined retail prices but includes a game or accessory you would not buy. Fix: compare against your personal shopping list and current local prices, not the headline percentage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using an original Switch case or protector

Symptom: the console is tight, the controls are pressed, or the protector leaves the display uncovered. Fix: replace it with a product explicitly designed for Switch 2.

Regional price and availability checks

There is no globally reliable Switch 2 bundle price. Nintendo’s retail pricing, taxes, retailer discounts, stock and included games vary by country, and the September 1, 2026 price increase means launch-era articles can be misleading. Nintendo Life’s September 21, 2026 guide is useful for US and UK availability, but the final decision should use the retailer listing serving your address.

Nintendo’s Australian accessory page includes Australian and New Zealand pricing for listed products. Those figures should not be generalized to other regions. Treat every displayed price as regional and time-sensitive, and check whether a promotion is one-time, limited-stock or tied to a particular retailer.

Bottom line for a first-time buyer

Buy the console and the game you genuinely want. Do not add a controller or dock merely because an online checklist says you need one: Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 dock are already supplied. Add a microSD Express card when your digital library requires expansion, choose a Switch 2-specific case or protector if you carry the system, and reuse an original Pro Controller only if its older controls suit you. Treat original docks, ordinary microSD cards, original Joy-Con attachments and original-size cases as incompatible assumptions until Nintendo confirms the exact accessory.
