Some games do not run, some work with missing features or modes, and others require the original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con or a legacy accessory. Before buying a game or assuming an existing title will work, search its exact name in Nintendo’s current compatibility checker.
The checker is the authoritative place to verify a title because Nintendo continues testing games and issuing updates. Hardware differences between the two consoles mean that a game can launch while a particular controller feature, camera mode, Toy-Con accessory or gameplay mode does not.

What Nintendo Switch 2 backward compatibility actually covers
Nintendo describes Switch 2 as able to play compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. That wording matters: “backward compatible” does not mean every Switch game, peripheral and mode transfers unchanged.

Physical Switch game cards
Insert a Nintendo Switch game card into the Switch 2 card slot and start the title normally. Nintendo immediately qualifies this feature: some cards may be unsupported or only partially compatible. A card’s physical format therefore does not bypass the compatibility check.

Digital games you already own
Link the Nintendo Account that owns your digital games to the Switch 2. Games purchased digitally on Switch can then be downloaded to Switch 2, subject to the same title-by-title compatibility limitations as physical games. Account access makes the software available; it does not guarantee that every mode or accessory function works.
Nintendo’s compatibility information establishes game access, not a blanket promise that every save file, peripheral setup or game mode transfers without changes. Check the individual title and follow Nintendo’s account and system-transfer instructions for save data separately.
How to check whether a specific Switch game works
Use Nintendo’s official compatibility search before purchasing a game for Switch 2 and before relying on an old favorite for a trip or event. The page is a live title lookup rather than a permanent, exhaustive list.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility checker.
- Search for the exact game name, including the edition or subtitle when several releases exist.
- Read the result for the whole game and for any listed modes, accessories or controller requirements.
- Check whether Nintendo identifies a free compatibility update, a paid Switch 2 upgrade or a remaining limitation.
- If the result leaves a third-party game question unanswered, contact that game’s publisher for title-specific information, as Nintendo Support advises.
- Repeat the search close to purchase or play. Nintendo says testing and updates can change the supported catalog.
A title that is not shown as fully supported should not be treated as confirmed compatible merely because another game in the same series works. Conversely, an older result may change after a software update, so use the current checker rather than a copied list or forum post.

How to interpret compatibility results
Fully playable
A positive result means Nintendo has identified the title as playable on Switch 2 under the conditions shown. Read the notes anyway: a game can be playable while requiring an original Joy-Con for a particular mode.
Partial functionality
Partial compatibility can affect one minigame, camera feature, accessory, control method or other portion of the experience. The main software may launch while the affected function does not behave as it did on the original console.
Not supported or still being tested
An unsupported result means you should not plan to play that title on Switch 2. Some games may take longer to become playable, and Nintendo can add support through future testing or updates. There is no official compatibility percentage in the published material, so claims such as “all but a certain number of games work” are not reliable without a dated Nintendo source.
Games with original Joy-Con or accessory requirements
Switch 2 includes Joy-Con 2, but those controllers are not interchangeable with original Switch Joy-Con for every function. Nintendo’s compatibility examples include the following cases:

| Game | What does not work with Joy-Con 2 or Switch 2 | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Ring Fit Adventure | Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Ring-Con. | Original Switch Joy-Con attached to the Ring-Con. |
| Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 02: Robot Kit | Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Robot accessory. | Original Switch Joy-Con. |
| 1-2-Switch | Modes using the right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera require the original controller. | Original Switch right Joy-Con connected wirelessly. |
| Game Builder Garage | Specified IR-camera Nodons in Free Programming mode need the original right Joy-Con. | Original Switch right Joy-Con connected wirelessly. |
| Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training for Nintendo Switch | Finger Calculations, Finger Drills and Rock, Paper, Scissors Test use the right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera. | Original Switch right Joy-Con. |
| Nintendo Switch Sports | Joy-Con 2 do not fit the Leg Strap, so Football Shoot-Out cannot use them. | Original Switch Joy-Con with the Leg Strap. |
| WarioWare: Move It! | Microgames that use the IR Motion Camera need the original right Joy-Con. | Original Switch right Joy-Con. |
| Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 01: Variety Kit | Original Joy-Con are required; the Switch 2 console does not fit all Toy-Con pieces or the Toy-Con screen stand. | Original Switch Joy-Con and the compatible Labo setup; expect a different experience. |
| Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 03: Vehicle Kit | Original Joy-Con are required; Switch 2 does not fit all Toy-Con pieces or the Toy-Con screen stand. | Original Switch Joy-Con and the compatible Labo setup; expect a different experience. |
| Everybody 1-2-Switch! | Joy-Con 2 force-feedback vibration is reduced compared with original Joy-Con, which can make Joy-Con Hide & Seek harder. | It remains playable, but original Joy-Con provide the intended vibration behavior. |
This is a set of Nintendo-documented examples, not a guarantee that no other game has a special requirement. Check the live result for your title, especially when it uses infrared cameras, a strap, a Ring-Con, Labo cardboard or another physical accessory.
Using and charging original Switch Joy-Con with Switch 2
Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2. They cannot physically attach to the Switch 2 console, so the console cannot charge them.
If you no longer have an original Switch, Nintendo identifies two charging options: a Joy-Con charging grip or a Joy-Con charging stand (two-way). An original Nintendo Switch console can also charge the controllers. Pairing and charging are separate issues: wireless connection may let a required game mode work, but you still need a charging method.
Updates, upgrades and performance differences
Nintendo’s compatibility page notes that some games receive free updates or paid upgrades that add content or improve performance. Availability and pricing are title-specific, so look for the exact option shown for the game rather than assuming every Switch purchase includes a Switch 2 edition.

A compatibility update can change whether a title works or resolve a limitation, but it does not turn every legacy accessory into a Switch 2 accessory. Physical fit, camera placement and controller attachment remain practical constraints even when the software itself has been updated.

- Identify the format: decide whether you will insert a physical card or download a digital entitlement tied to your Nintendo Account.
- Search the exact title: use Nintendo’s checker, including the edition and any bundled or regional variation.
- Read mode-level notes: look beyond “playable” for camera, vibration, strap, Toy-Con or other accessory qualifications.
- Inventory your hardware: keep original right or left Joy-Con, a Ring-Con, Leg Strap, Labo pieces or other required equipment if the result names them.
- Plan charging: original Joy-Con that pair wirelessly still need an original Switch, charging grip or two-way charging stand.
- Check updates: install the game’s available software and compatibility update; compare any free or paid Switch 2 upgrade shown for that title.
- Verify close to purchase: Nintendo’s testing and updates can change support after you first checked.
Common problems and what they mean
The game card is recognized but a mode will not work
Look for a partial-functionality note in the checker. If the affected feature uses an IR Motion Camera, physical strap or Toy-Con attachment, connect the specified original Joy-Con and accessory. If the note says the function is unsupported, changing software settings will not restore it.
The digital game is missing from the library
Confirm that Switch 2 is linked to the Nintendo Account that purchased the game, then open the account’s redownload or virtual-game-card area. If the title still does not appear, verify ownership on the original Switch account and consult Nintendo Support. Account linking makes an owned compatible title downloadable; it does not override an unsupported result.

This is expected when they are paired wirelessly to Switch 2. Use an original Switch console, a Joy-Con charging grip or a two-way charging stand. The controllers cannot charge by attaching to Switch 2 because they cannot attach to it.
A game worked on Switch but behaves differently on Switch 2
Compare the current checker note with the game’s update status. Hardware differences can produce reduced vibration, a missing camera mode or an accessory fit issue even when the main game launches. For a third-party title whose status is unclear, ask its publisher for the current compatibility details.
What Nintendo says about future support
Nintendo’s official compatibility statement is: “While future testing and updates may increase the number of supported titles, some games may take longer to become playable, may experience partial functionality issues, or may not be supported.” Treat that as an ongoing status, not a promise that every game will eventually work. Recheck the title whenever your purchase or play date is far from the original compatibility check.
