What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Most Switch 2 owners should start with a microSD Express card only if they need more game storage, a carrying case and screen protector for portable play, and a Pro Controller if they prefer a traditional gamepad. The console already includes Joy-Con 2 controllers, straps and a dock, so buying every accessory is unnecessary. The Switch 2 Camera is a specialist purchase for GameChat or camera-enabled games, while a second dock makes sense only for another television or as a replacement.
“At launch” is best treated as a buying-priority question rather than a historical price guide. Nintendo’s official pages confirm the accessory types and compatibility covered here, but do not establish launch-day prices, stock or which products were available on a particular date.

Quick buying guide: which Switch 2 accessories are worth it?
Choose by the problem you are trying to solve. Nintendo’s official catalog lists the following accessories, but it does not support a universal best-value ranking or independent claims about durability, reliability or consumer satisfaction. Use the table as a fit test, not as a recommendation to buy everything.
| Need | Accessory to consider | Why it fits | What to check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| More space for downloaded games | microSD Express card | Switch 2 game-storage expansion requires the Express standard and supports capacities up to 2 TB. | A conventional microSD card does not expand Switch 2 game storage. Nintendo’s catalog lists a 256GB card, but 256GB is not the stated capacity limit. |
| Portable protection | Carrying Case & Screen Protector | Combines a travel case with screen protection for the console. | It is intended for the console itself, not a complete dock-and-cable setup. |
| Transporting a complete setup | All-In-One Carrying Case | Designed for the console, dock, controllers, cables and up to six game cards. | Its larger capacity matters only if you regularly carry TV-mode equipment. |
| Traditional gamepad controls | Switch 2 Pro Controller | Adds a conventional controller shape, HD rumble 2, motion controls, built-in amiibo functionality, a Capture Button, a GameChat C Button, mappable GL/GR buttons and an audio jack. | It is optional; Joy-Con 2 controllers are included with the system. |
| Video chat or camera-aware games | Switch 2 Camera | Nintendo describes a dedicated USB-C camera for video chat and in-game camera features. | A compatible USB-C webcam can also be used for GameChat video chat, according to Nintendo’s accessory listing. |
| A second television location | Replacement/second Switch 2 Dock Set | Includes a dock, AC adapter, USB-C charging cable and Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. | The system already includes one dock, so this is for another room or replacement. |
| Another charger | Switch 2 AC Adapter | Nintendo lists it as a replacement for the adapter included with the console and says it can connect to the console or dock. | Do not confuse it with the original Switch adapter when planning TV mode. |
See Nintendo’s current Switch 2 Accessories catalog for the products Nintendo lists, and verify the exact model, price and availability before ordering.

Storage: buy microSD Express, not an ordinary microSD card
The standard is the deciding factor
Switch 2 accepts microSD Express cards for game-storage expansion, with support stated up to 2 TB on Nintendo’s specifications page. This is a standards requirement, not a suggestion about performance. A regular microSD card—the type commonly used in the original Switch—cannot be used to expand Switch 2 game storage.
Nintendo’s accessory catalog lists a 256GB microSD Express card. That listing identifies one product, not the maximum or only supported capacity. The technical specification is the broader reference: capacities up to 2 TB are supported. Capacity, price and stock can vary by retailer and date, so check the card’s packaging and listing for the Express designation before purchase. The Nintendo Switch 2 technical specifications provide the stated capacity limit.
What an old Switch card can still do
Nintendo says a conventional microSD card from the original Switch can be used to copy screenshots and videos from the original console. That limited transfer use does not make it a Switch 2 game-storage card. Do not move an old card into a Switch 2 expecting installed games to become available.

- Mostly physical cartridges and a small digital library: You may not need a card immediately.
- All-digital buyer or frequent large downloads: Buy a microSD Express card before internal space becomes a problem.
- Reusing an old card: Keep it for copying original-Switch screenshots and videos, not for Switch 2 game installation.
- Comparing capacities: Use the library size you expect to keep installed, and remember that Nintendo’s stated ceiling is 2 TB, not 256GB.
Protection and travel: choose the case format that matches your loadout
Carrying Case & Screen Protector
The standard Carrying Case & Screen Protector is the straightforward choice for people who carry the console in handheld mode. Its value is practical: a dedicated case protects the system in a bag, while the included screen protector addresses scratches during travel and storage. It is the better fit when the dock stays at home or at a fixed television.
Rank #2
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
All-In-One Carrying Case
The All-In-One Carrying Case is designed around a complete setup. Nintendo says it can carry the console, dock, controllers, cables and up to six game cards. Choose it when you move between homes, dorm rooms or other television locations and want one bag for the hardware. It is unnecessary bulk if you only take the handheld console out for short trips.
| Case | Designed to carry | Best match | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carrying Case & Screen Protector | Portable console protection plus screen protection | Handheld travel and everyday storage | Not presented by Nintendo as a full dock-and-cable carrier |
| All-In-One Carrying Case | Console, dock, controllers, cables and up to six game cards | People who transport a complete TV setup | Larger format is harder to justify for handheld-only use |
Neither format is automatically “better.” The deciding question is whether you need to carry the dock and its cables. Nintendo’s product descriptions and current availability are on the official accessories page.
Controllers: when the Pro Controller earns its place
What the Switch 2 Pro Controller adds
The Switch 2 Pro Controller is an optional traditional gamepad for players who prefer two full sticks, a conventional grip and a dedicated controller layout. Nintendo’s catalog describes these features:
Recommended Free Tools
- HD rumble 2
- Motion controls
- Built-in amiibo functionality
- Capture Button
- C Button for GameChat
- Mappable GL and GR buttons
- Audio jack
Those features matter most for long sessions, games that feel better with a conventional pad, or players who want the extra remapping and headset connection options. They do not turn the controller into a requirement: the console includes Joy-Con 2 controllers.
Rank #3
- The updated Joy-Con 2 controllers have motion controls and HD rumble 2, along with the new C Button for easy GameChat* access and all-new mouse controls in compatible games.
- This set includes both a left and right Joy-Con 2 controller (along with a pair of Joy-Con 2 straps)—perfect for local multiplayer with a friend in compatible games.
- Includes two Joy-Con 2 straps.
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
Who should skip it at first
Keep the included Joy-Con 2 setup if you mainly play handheld, use motion controls casually, or play local multiplayer that already works with the controllers in the box. Buy the Pro Controller later if a specific game or comfort problem makes the standard layout worthwhile. This avoids paying for a duplicate control method before you know you need one.
Adding Joy-Con 2 accessories
Additional Joy-Con 2 controllers are for a real multiplayer or replacement need, not an automatic launch purchase. Nintendo states that the new Joy-Con 2 charging grip and Joy-Con 2 strap are for Switch 2 and cannot be used with original Switch Joy-Con. If you are expanding a multiplayer setup, check that every grip or strap you buy is labeled for Joy-Con 2.
Camera and GameChat: a specialist accessory
What the Switch 2 Camera is for
Nintendo describes the Switch 2 Camera as a USB-C camera for video chat and games that use camera input. It is worth considering if you expect to use GameChat video regularly or already know that a camera-enabled game is part of your library.
You may not need Nintendo’s dedicated camera
Nintendo’s accessory listing also says a compatible USB-C webcam can be used for GameChat video chat. That gives you an alternative if you already own a suitable webcam. Compatibility is the key condition: a random USB camera is not guaranteed to work simply because it has a USB connector. Confirm USB-C connection and Switch 2/GameChat support in the current product information before buying.

Who should wait
Skip the camera if you do not use video chat and have no camera-enabled games planned. It does not improve ordinary handheld, docked or local multiplayer play, so it is one of the easiest launch accessories to postpone.
Second dock, replacement dock and extra power
Replacement/second Switch 2 Dock Set
Nintendo lists a Switch 2 Dock Set that includes the dock, AC adapter, USB-C charging cable and Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. The useful distinction is purpose: the console already includes one dock, so this set is for a second television location or replacement after damage or loss.
For a two-room setup, a second dock can save repeated cable moves. For occasional travel, the All-In-One case may be more useful if it lets you transport the existing dock. Compare the cost and weight of carrying the dock with the convenience of leaving one permanently connected; Nintendo’s catalog does not provide a universal value verdict.
Switch 2 AC Adapter
Nintendo describes the listed Switch 2 AC Adapter as a replacement for the adapter included with the system and says it can connect to the console or dock. It is useful as a replacement or a permanently routed second charger, but it is not needed merely because you own the console—the system already includes an adapter.

What original Switch accessories can you reuse?
Existing Switch owners should check each accessory separately. “Works with Switch 2” is not an all-or-nothing judgment. Nintendo’s support guidance distinguishes wireless pairing, physical attachment, charging and TV output. The official compatibility details are in Nintendo’s compatibility support article.
| Original Switch accessory | Switch 2 result | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Original Joy-Con | Can connect wirelessly, but cannot attach to Switch 2 or be charged by the console. | Useful as wireless spare controllers if you have another charging method; not a physical replacement for Joy-Con 2. |
| Original Pro Controller | Can connect wirelessly and can charge through the Switch 2 dock by USB. | You may not need the new Pro Controller if the older one already suits your grip and feature needs. |
| Original Switch dock | Incompatible. | Plan on using a Switch 2 dock for TV mode. |
| High Speed HDMI cable supplied with original Switch | Incompatible. | Use the cable supplied with the Switch 2 dock or a confirmed compatible replacement. |
| Original Switch AC adapter | Can charge the console but does not provide the output required for TV mode. | It may be a charging backup, not a TV-mode power solution. |
| Original microSD card | Does not expand Switch 2 game storage; can be used to copy original-Switch screenshots and videos. | Buy microSD Express for Switch 2 game storage. |
| Original Joy-Con charging accessories | Do not assume compatibility with Joy-Con 2. | Use accessories explicitly made for the controller generation you own. |
The most common expensive mistake is treating a wireless connection as full compatibility. A controller may pair but still lack physical attachment or a way to charge from the new console. Check the exact function you need—play, charging, attachment or TV output—before reusing old hardware.
Buy by player profile
Handheld-first player
- Start with the Carrying Case & Screen Protector.
- Add a microSD Express card only if your download library needs more room.
- Skip the second dock, camera and Pro Controller unless a specific use case appears.
Digital-library player
- Prioritize a microSD Express card.
- Choose capacity based on the games you intend to keep installed, within Nintendo’s up-to-2TB support limit.
- Do not buy a regular microSD card because it is cheaper; it will not provide Switch 2 game-storage expansion.
Traditional-controller player
- Try the included Joy-Con 2 controllers first.
- Choose the Switch 2 Pro Controller if you want a conventional grip, HD rumble 2, motion controls, amiibo support, remappable GL/GR buttons, an audio jack or the GameChat C Button.
- If you already own an original Pro Controller, test wireless pairing and dock USB charging before replacing it.
Frequent traveler with a full setup
- Choose the All-In-One Carrying Case if you carry the dock, controllers, cables and game cards.
- Choose the smaller case if the dock remains at home.
- Consider a second Dock Set only when leaving a dock connected at another television is more convenient than moving equipment.
GameChat participant
- Confirm that you will use video chat or camera-enabled games.
- Compare the dedicated Switch 2 Camera with a compatible USB-C webcam you already own.
- Do not buy a camera solely because it is listed as a launch accessory; it has no role in ordinary play.
Launch-day checks before you place an order
- Confirm the standard: storage must say microSD Express.
- Confirm the generation: Joy-Con 2 accessories are not interchangeable with original Joy-Con.
- Confirm the included items: the console already comes with Joy-Con 2 controllers, straps, a dock and an AC adapter.
- Confirm the job: a second dock is for another TV or replacement, not a basic requirement.
- Confirm the camera use: video chat or camera-enabled games should be part of your plan.
- Confirm compatibility: old Switch equipment may work wirelessly while failing to attach, charge or support TV mode.
- Confirm current commercial details: Nintendo’s official pages cited here do not establish launch-day prices or stock, so verify the retailer listing and exact model at checkout.
Bottom line on Switch 2 launch accessories
There is no mandatory accessory bundle beyond what Nintendo includes with the console. Buy a microSD Express card when digital storage is your constraint, the standard case when you carry the system, the All-In-One case when you carry the dock and cables, and the Pro Controller when you genuinely prefer a traditional gamepad. Treat the Camera, second dock, extra adapter and additional Joy-Con 2 hardware as use-case purchases. Existing Switch owners can reuse an original Pro Controller wirelessly and through dock USB charging, but should not expect the old dock, HDMI cable, AC adapter or microSD card to provide full Switch 2 functionality.
