Nintendo’s Japanese ordinary shares trade under stock code 7974 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market. U.S. investors may instead see NTDOY, an over-the-counter, unsponsored American depositary receipt (ADR) representing four depositary receipts for each ordinary share. The latest completed fiscal year paid 219 yen per ordinary share; Nintendo’s displayed forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027 is 162 yen, subject to change.

Which ticker should you use?
7974 is the Japanese ordinary-share code
Nintendo’s own answer to the question “What is the stock ticker number of Nintendo?” is “It is 7974.” In Japanese market terminology this is the stock code for Nintendo Co., Ltd.’s ordinary shares. The shares are listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Prime Market, whose current market structure began on April 4, 2022. Nintendo states that the trading unit is 100 shares, so an order for one standard unit generally represents 100 ordinary shares, subject to the rules and order types supported by your intermediary.
The share-status page is the authoritative place to confirm the code and listing. Its figures are dated March 31, 2026, so use the page again if you need a current share count or other status data rather than relying on an old quote screen.

NTDOY is a separate U.S. trading instrument
Citi identifies NTDOY as an OTC, unsponsored ADR. The ratio is one ordinary share to four depositary receipts (1:4). In practical terms, four NTDOY receipts correspond to the economic quantity of one Nintendo ordinary share before any fees, currency effects or other adjustments imposed by the depositary or intermediary. Citi’s corporate-action notice records that the ratio changed from 1:8 to 1:4 in 2022. Citi ratio-change notice
An ADR is not a second Tokyo ticker and does not turn the OTC receipt into a Tokyo-listed ordinary share. Venue, trading currency, settlement, depositary charges, corporate-action processing and the rights available to a holder can differ. The cited sources do not establish which brokers offer NTDOY, what each broker charges, or how a particular jurisdiction treats the receipt for tax purposes. Check those points in your own account documentation before placing an order.

The exchange is closed on Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, January 1–3 and December 31. These are exchange hours, not a promise that a broker will accept, route or execute an order at every minute shown. A broker can impose its own cutoffs, convert your instruction into a different order type, or make an overseas client wait for account, currency or market-access checks. Convert JST to your local time with the correct date and daylight-saving rules; the Tokyo session can fall on the previous calendar day in North America.
Do not apply Tokyo’s schedule to NTDOY automatically. NTDOY trades over the counter through the market infrastructure and hours made available by the relevant broker and market makers. The JPX timetable describes the underlying Japanese listing, not a guaranteed ADR session.

Fiscal year ending March 31, 2027
Nintendo’s dividend page displays an annual forecast of 162 yen per share for FY2027. It lists the interim and year-end amounts as not yet determined, with record dates of September 30, 2026 and March 31, 2027. As of the company information available on October 13, 2026, the page still showed the interim amount as not yet determined even though the September 30 record date had passed. Treat 162 yen as the company’s displayed forecast, not a guaranteed declaration or payment, and revisit the dividend page and Nintendo’s IR calendar for the formal announcement and dates.
How Nintendo describes its dividend policy
Nintendo says it considers the profit level for the fiscal year when paying dividends. Its May 8, 2026 notice introduced a revised year-end calculation for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026. The notice states:
“The annual dividend per share is established at the higher of the amount calculated by dividing 40% of consolidated operating profit for the fiscal year by the total number of outstanding shares, excluding treasury shares, as of the end of the fiscal year rounded up to the 1 yen digit, or the amount calculated based on the 60% consolidated payout ratio rounded up to the 1 yen digit.”

This wording applies to the revised policy described in that notice, beginning with the FY2026 year-end dividend. It should not be presented as an unchanging formula for every historical interim or annual payment: Nintendo’s interim rule and earlier policy differ. - Decide whether you need ordinary shares or an ADR. Entering 7974 points to the Tokyo-listed ordinary shares; entering NTDOY points to Citi’s OTC unsponsored receipt. Do not assume a search result with “Nintendo” is the instrument you intended.
- Read the instrument description. Confirm the venue, currency, security type and, for NTDOY, the 1:4 ordinary-share-to-DR ratio. A quote screen may display a local price that is not directly comparable with a Tokyo price.
- Check the trading unit and order quantity. Nintendo states that its stock unit is 100 shares. Your intermediary may offer different odd-lot or fractional functionality, but that availability is account-specific and is not established by Nintendo’s FAQ.
- Check market and order cutoffs. For 7974, compare your broker’s cutoffs with JPX’s 8:00 and 12:05 JST order-acceptance starts and the 9:00–11:30 and 12:30–15:30 JST auction sessions. For NTDOY, use the broker’s OTC schedule instead.
- Review costs and settlement terms. Confirm commissions, foreign-exchange conversion, custody or depositary charges, settlement timing and corporate-action handling. The official ticker and exchange pages do not set those charges.
- Verify dividend treatment. Check whether the displayed amount is per ordinary share or per DR, whether a record date has passed, and what withholding or depositary deductions apply in your jurisdiction. Do not infer tax treatment from the ticker alone.
7974 versus NTDOY: the differences that matter
| Comparison point | 7974 | NTDOY |
|---|---|---|
| Security type | Nintendo ordinary share | American depositary receipt |
| Venue | Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market | Over-the-counter market |
| Code | 7974 | NTDOY |
| Trading currency and local session | Japanese yen; JPX sessions in JST | Usually quoted through the intermediary’s OTC service; hours and currency handling depend on that service |
| Ratio | One ordinary share | Four DRs represent one ordinary share, according to Citi |
| Access, fees and tax | Not established by the cited issuer pages; ask your intermediary | Not established by the cited depositary page; ask your intermediary and tax adviser |
The table is a comparison of the instruments, not a recommendation. A lower displayed price for one symbol does not by itself mean it is cheaper: the ratio, currency, spread, commissions and depositary charges all affect the amount you pay and receive.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling NTDOY the Tokyo ticker. Use 7974 for the Japanese ordinary shares and label NTDOY as the OTC ADR.
- Multiplying a Tokyo dividend by four. Four DRs represent one ordinary share, so the direction of any conversion depends on whether the published amount is per ordinary share or per receipt. Confirm the depositary notice.
- Assuming the forecast is a declared dividend. The 162-yen FY2027 figure is marked as a forecast, with interim and year-end amounts still not yet determined on the cited page.
- Using Tokyo hours for an ADR order. JPX hours govern 7974’s underlying market; they do not guarantee NTDOY execution times.
- Ignoring the 100-share unit. A quote for one share may understate the cash needed for a standard Tokyo-market order if your intermediary requires a full unit.
- Assuming a shareholder-perk program exists. Nintendo’s FAQ says it has no special shareholder benefit plan. Any value analysis should therefore focus on the security’s financial distributions and price risk rather than expected merchandise or coupons.
- Relying on an old ratio. Citi’s notice records a 2022 change from 1:8 to 1:4. Recheck the current depositary terms before calculating a payment or position size.
Where to verify changes
For the Japanese code, listing and share unit, use Nintendo’s Status of Shares page and Investor Relations FAQ. For declared amounts, record dates and policy updates, use the Dividends page, the IR Calendar and the company’s formal notices. For NTDOY’s ratio and ADR status, consult Citi’s depositary-receipt details and any newer depositary notices. For session times and closures, JPX’s Domestic Stocks Trading Hours page is the relevant exchange source.
Quick Recap
Bottom line: 7974 is Nintendo’s Tokyo-listed ordinary-share code. NTDOY is a different, OTC unsponsored ADR with a 1:4 ratio. The completed FY2026 dividend was 219 yen per ordinary share, while the displayed FY2027 forecast is 162 yen and remains subject to confirmation. Match the symbol, venue, ratio, hours and dividend unit to the security you actually intend to hold.
