The documented controversies concern two Nintendo 3DS releases: Tomodachi Life, criticized for excluding same-sex relationships, and Fire Emblem Fates, whose Western localization changed a scene Nintendo said could be understood as gay conversion or drugging. These are selected examples, not a definitive ranking of the era’s most controversial games; the available evidence does not establish a comparable Wii U case.
What “recall” means in this context
A product recall means a product is withdrawn or recalled through a formal action. The accounts of Tomodachi Life and Fire Emblem Fates describe criticism, an apology and a regional content change—not a recall of either game. Historical Nintendo recall coverage about Wii Remote straps and DS power adapters concerns hardware accessories, not these game releases (Game Developer).

Tomodachi Life: criticism over relationships the game excluded
Nintendo’s 2014 3DS life simulation game came under criticism because its relationship system did not permit same-sex relationships. Nintendo said it had not intended the game as social commentary. In an apology, it acknowledged that the omission had disappointed people and said the shipped game’s design could not be changed. Nintendo also said it would strive to make a future Tomodachi installment more inclusive and representative of all players.
“We apologize for disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life,” Nintendo said in a statement reproduced by TIME on May 9, 2014. In a separate statement quoted by Nintendo Life, Nintendo of America said the game was intended as “a whimsical and quirky game” and that it was “absolutely not trying to provide social commentary.”
Fire Emblem Fates: a change in Western localization
Fire Emblem Fates, a 3DS role-playing game, drew a different dispute: debate over changes made for its US and European release. Nintendo confirmed that this version removed an expression between characters that might be interpreted as gay conversion or drugging. The change was part of localization; describing the issue only as “censorship” obscures what Nintendo said was changed and why it considered the change necessary.
“In the version of the game that ships in the U.S. and Europe, there is no expression which might be considered as gay conversion or drugging that occurs between characters,” Nintendo of America said in a statement to Nintendo World Report, reproduced by Nintendo Life. Contemporary coverage also discussed the localization changes and same-sex relationship options in the game (GameSpot; Nintendo Life).

How the two controversies differed
| Game | Issue | Nintendo’s response | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tomodachi Life | Relationship-system design did not allow same-sex relationships. | Apologized for the omission, said the shipped design could not be changed, and pledged to strive for a more inclusive future installment. | The game’s shipped design. |
| Fire Emblem Fates | A scene in the original content was considered potentially interpretable as gay conversion or drugging. | Confirmed the expression was absent from the US and European version. | Regional localization, not a recall of the game. |
What this says—and does not say—about the 3DS and Wii U era
These two 3DS cases show distinct kinds of controversy: one concerned a relationship feature the game lacked, while the other concerned how a scene was handled in regional localization. The evidence here does not establish that they were the era’s “most controversial” titles: no ranking method or comprehensive comparison is available. Nor does it support presenting a Wii U example alongside them. That is a limit on what these examples establish, not proof that no Wii U game controversy occurred.
