Nintendo of America president and COO Devon Pritchard described the planned live-action The Legend of Zelda film as one way Nintendo hopes to bring its experiences to both current fans and new audiences. The available coverage of her interview does not establish what she said about GTA 6, third-party game goals, or her first year in the role, so those topics cannot be reliably attributed to her here.

What Pritchard said about the Zelda film

Nintendo Life’s September 18, 2026 report on Pritchard’s interview with Variety quotes her describing the film partnership as a way to broaden access to Nintendo experiences:

“We’re working with Sony Pictures. We are going to have a movie come out in the end of April…those partnerships and touchpoints with companies like Sony and Sony Pictures around how we can bring those experiences more broadly to not only our current players and fans but to new ones, I think that’s one of the most exciting things for us over the next few years”

What is confirmed about the live-action The Legend of Zelda

Nintendo’s September 8, 2026 announcement names the film The Legend of Zelda and gives its planned worldwide theatrical release date as April 30, 2027. Sony Pictures Entertainment will handle worldwide theatrical distribution. Nintendo and Sony are co-financing the production, with Nintendo providing more than half of the financing.

  • Based on: Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda action-adventure game series.
  • Producers: Nintendo and Arad Productions; Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad are producers.
  • Director: Wes Ball.
  • Announced leads: Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link.

These are announced production details, not a guarantee that the planned release date cannot change. Nintendo’s film announcement

Why Nintendo is extending its reach beyond games

Nintendo has described movies and other media as ways to introduce its characters and intellectual property to people who may not encounter them through a dedicated game system. In a shareholder Q&A, Shigeru Miyamoto said that smartphones, movie theaters, YouTube, and other channels can reach a wider audience than Nintendo’s dedicated platforms alone. He described these channels as opportunities to create new points of contact with Nintendo characters and potentially encourage future game sales.

That is a company strategy, not evidence that every film or video initiative converts viewers into game buyers. Nintendo’s February 2026 results briefing similarly connected films and video with its goal of increasing consumer touchpoints across regions and age groups. At that time, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the company was focused first on its two announced films and could not provide more information about other movie development. What is—and is not—established about GTA 6 and third-party games

The available sources do not establish Pritchard’s position on GTA 6, Nintendo’s goals for third-party games, or the details of her first year as Nintendo of America’s president and COO. The presence of those subjects in the headline is not enough to substantiate claims about what she said. No specific GTA 6 plan, third-party target, or first-year assessment should be attributed to her without a check against the original Variety interview.
