Nintendo Music works as a mobile app on supported iPhone, iPad, and Android devices, and as a streaming website on a computer. You need a Nintendo Account and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, but you do not need to own a Nintendo Switch console. The mobile app can play downloads without an internet connection; the computer website cannot download tracks or play them offline.
Which devices are supported?
Nintendo provides separate requirements for the mobile app and the computer web version. Meeting a minimum operating-system version does not guarantee that every model will work correctly.

iPhone and iPad requirements
The app supports iPhones running iOS 16 or later and iPads running iPadOS 16 or later. Older versions of iOS and iPadOS are outside the stated support range. Apple devices that can install a supported operating system may still have model-specific performance differences.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Android requirements and installation limits
Android devices need Android OS 9 or later. Nintendo excludes devices with 2 GB of RAM or less, and it does not support installations obtained outside Google Play. Installing an APK from another source is therefore not a supported workaround.

Nintendo’s support article includes an important qualification: “Functionality is not guaranteed for all devices that meet the listed requirements.” A phone can satisfy the Android version and RAM minimums yet still have problems with playback or other app functions. Support for a newly released operating-system version may also take time to arrive.
Computer access
The web version is intended for computers. Nintendo recommends using a current version of Chrome, Safari, or Microsoft Edge. The web version is not supported on mobile phones or tablets, even if their browsers use the same names as desktop browsers.
| Access method | Supported hardware | Software requirement | Offline playback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile app | Supported iPhone, iPad, or Android device | iOS 16+, iPadOS 16+, or Android OS 9+; Android devices must have more than 2 GB RAM and use Google Play for installation | Yes, after downloads are made in advance |
| Web version | Computer | Current Chrome, Safari, or Microsoft Edge recommended | No; streaming only |
| Mobile or tablet browser | Phone or tablet browser | Not a supported web-version setup | Not available |
Do I need Nintendo Switch Online or a Switch console?
You need two account-related things to use Nintendo Music: a Nintendo Account and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo says the music service is included with that membership at no additional charge. The app itself is free to download, but downloading the app does not by itself provide access to the catalog.
A Nintendo Switch system is not required. You can create or use a Nintendo Account, subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online, and use Nintendo Music with a supported phone, tablet, or computer without owning Nintendo hardware.

Family memberships
Every person covered by a Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership can use Nintendo Music. Nintendo’s United States information says the family plan can be shared with up to seven other members. Family-plan rules and the number of permitted members can vary by market, so check the terms for the country attached to your Nintendo Account.
Is Nintendo Music free to use?
Nintendo Music has no separate music-service fee for an active Nintendo Switch Online member, but Nintendo Switch Online itself is a paid subscription. The amount and billing schedule depend on your country and membership type, so a price shown in one region should not be treated as a worldwide price.
Seven-day trial
Nintendo advertises a seven-day Nintendo Switch Online trial for eligible new users, and Nintendo confirms that Nintendo Music works during the trial. Eligibility, country availability, and exclusions apply. In the United States, Nintendo’s terms say the trial automatically changes to a one-month, auto-renewing membership at the then-current price unless it is canceled. Read the current terms presented for your account before starting a trial and set a reminder if you do not want automatic renewal.

Yes, but only through the mobile app after you download the music while online. Nintendo Music Support states: “Music can be listened to offline by downloading the music in advance.” Downloads let you continue listening when a connection is unavailable, such as during travel or in an area with weak coverage.

How to prepare offline listening
- Install the Nintendo Music app from the Apple App Store or Google Play on a supported device.
- Connect to the internet and sign in with the Nintendo Account linked to your Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Open the album, track, or playlist you want to take offline and use the app’s download control.
- Keep the app open long enough for the download to finish. A reliable Wi-Fi connection can reduce interruptions and mobile-data use.
- Before leaving coverage, switch your device to airplane mode or temporarily disable its data connection and start playback. This verifies that the selected music is actually stored for offline use.
The app is the place to manage offline listening. Nintendo does not describe a computer-download feature, and the web version cannot be used as a substitute for app downloads.
What the web version cannot do
Nintendo Music Support’s offline answer says, specifically for the web version, “Offline playback is not available.” The computer site supports online streaming and playlist organization, but it has no track-download function. Closing a browser tab or saving a web-page shortcut will not make music available without a connection.
App or computer website: which should you use?
Choose the app when you need downloads, phone or tablet access, or listening while away from reliable internet. Choose the computer site when you want a larger screen for browsing the catalog or organizing playlists and you expect to remain online.
Recommended Free Tools

| Download tracks | Yes, while online | No |
| Offline playback | Yes, for music downloaded in advance | No |
| Playlist handling | Available in the app | Browse and organize playlists in the browser |

Nintendo says visitors can peek at the web library without a membership. That limited preview should not be confused with full listening access, which requires the Nintendo Switch Online membership described above.

Can I listen in a car?
Nintendo says Nintendo Music supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In a compatible vehicle, you can control playlists with voice commands. Some settings available in the phone app are not available through either in-car interface, and Nintendo does not guarantee compatibility with every vehicle display.
Set up the connection before driving, use the vehicle’s approved controls, and follow Nintendo’s hands-free guidance. Do not operate a phone touchscreen while the vehicle is moving.

What happens to playlists if I cancel?
Nintendo says playlist data remains saved after Nintendo Switch Online is canceled. Some playlist functions, including editing, sharing, and deleting playlists, remain available after cancellation.
The cancellation support answer does not promise continued music streaming without an active membership. Treat saved playlist information and the right to stream the catalog as separate matters: your lists can remain stored even though membership is still required for normal listening access.
How much music is in the service?
Nintendo’s United States Nintendo Music page displayed more than 250 hours of music spanning more than 130 game titles when accessed on October 13, 2026. Nintendo does not present that figure as a permanent catalog guarantee, so the selection and total can grow as additional games are added.

The app will not install
- Confirm that the device runs iOS 16, iPadOS 16, or Android OS 9 or later.
- On Android, verify that the device has more than 2 GB of RAM.
- Install through the official Apple App Store or Google Play. Nintendo does not support installations from outside Google Play.
- If the device meets every minimum but still fails, remember that Nintendo does not guarantee functionality on every qualifying model.
The website does not work on a phone or tablet
The web version is designed for computers, not mobile browsers. Install the mobile app on a supported phone or tablet instead. On a computer, update Chrome, Safari, or Microsoft Edge before troubleshooting account or playback problems.
Downloaded music will not play without a connection
- Reconnect briefly and confirm that the download completed in the app.
- Check that you are signed in to the Nintendo Account associated with the active membership or eligible trial.
- Test the downloaded item in airplane mode before traveling.
- If the device recently updated its operating system, check Nintendo’s current support information; support for a new OS release can take time.
You expected browser downloads
Browser downloads are not supported. Use the mobile app to download music before going offline; the computer site remains streaming-only.
