Short answer: Nintendo eShop discounts change constantly, and a digital game belongs to the Nintendo Account that buys it. You cannot later move that license to another account. If you are buying for someone else, an eShop gift card or code is the practical option, provided it matches the recipient’s account country. Loading a virtual game card on a shared console lets other users play, but it does not change ownership.
Where to find current Nintendo eShop sales
Nintendo’s U.S. Sales & Deals page lists changing offers on digital games, downloadable content (DLC), and, in some cases, merchandise. The page itself tells shoppers to check back for featured offers. There is no reliable universal sale calendar, and a discount shown in an old article may have ended.

Check those details immediately before paying. Nintendo can change a price, remove a promotion, or add a new end date after an article or social-media post was published. A sale price also applies only to the listed title, edition, or DLC package; it should not be assumed to cover a bundle, physical version, or other platform.

How to check a price before buying
- Open Nintendo’s current Sales & Deals page for your country or region.
- Search for the exact game or DLC and open its product page.
- Compare the sale price with the regular price shown on that listing.
- Read the stated end date and any edition, platform, or account restrictions.
- At checkout, confirm that the price has not changed and that the correct Nintendo Account is signed in.
These checks matter because the account that completes the transaction becomes the owner of the digital purchase.
Who owns a digital Switch game?
Nintendo associates a downloadable game or DLC purchase with the Nintendo Account used to buy it. The license does not belong to the console, the person holding the console, or a second profile that happens to play on it.
Nintendo’s support answer to “Can I Transfer a Digital Game or DLC to a Different Nintendo Account?” is explicit: It’s not possible to transfer digital purchases from one Nintendo Account to another.
That means there is no supported hand-off after purchase, even if the two accounts are on the same Switch or belong to members of the same family.

What ownership means in practice
- If Account A buys a game, Account A retains the purchase history and entitlement.
- Signing into Account B does not make Account B the owner.
- Deleting the game from a console does not erase the purchase from Account A.
- Buying the game again on Account B creates a separate purchase; it does not transfer Account A’s copy.
Keep the purchasing account secure and accessible. Losing access to that account can prevent redownloading or managing its purchases, even though the console may still have local data.
Can other users play a game bought by one account?
Yes, under Nintendo’s current Switch 2 and Switch support model, console access and account ownership are separate. Nintendo says one Nintendo Account can have up to two consoles that can load virtual game cards. When a virtual game card is loaded on a console, any user account on that console can play the loaded game or DLC.
That shared play permission is not a transfer. The purchase remains attached to the account that paid for it. If the virtual game card is unloaded, the console is changed, or the account’s access conditions change, another user may no longer be able to launch the title.
Virtual game cards versus online licenses
Nintendo also describes online licenses for consoles that do not have the virtual game card loaded. The purchasing account can use an online license on such a console, but the console must be connected to the internet. Other users on that console cannot play the game through the purchasing account’s online license.
Older Switch support pages use “primary console” and “non-primary console” terminology. Newer guidance emphasizes virtual game cards and online licenses instead. Do not treat the older labels as proof that ownership can move between accounts; they describe different access arrangements for the same account-owned purchase.

Can you buy an eShop game directly for another account?
Nintendo’s published materials do not establish a checkout flow that lets you purchase a specific digital game and assign its license to another person’s Nintendo Account. The established rule is the opposite: the account that completes the purchase owns it, and Nintendo does not support transferring it afterward.
Therefore, do not buy the game on your own account expecting to “send” it later. The recipient may be able to play it on a console where your virtual game card is loaded, but that is console access controlled by your account, not a gift of the license. It can also become inconvenient if you stop sharing the console, change consoles, or need to keep your account signed in.
Are Game Vouchers a gifting workaround?
No. Nintendo’s Game Voucher FAQ says vouchers cannot be gifted and can be redeemed only by the Nintendo Account that purchased them. Nintendo also says that new vouchers are no longer available for purchase. A voucher already associated with an account is therefore not a transferable present.

The practical way to give someone a Nintendo game
For a person who should own the game on their own account, give funds rather than purchasing the title on your account. Nintendo’s U.S. Store describes eShop gift cards and gift codes as a way to give money for games and other digital content. The recipient redeems the code, adds the balance to their account, and chooses the game themselves.
Gift-card checklist
- Match the country: the cited U.S. Store offer specifies redemption with a U.S. Nintendo Account. Confirm the recipient’s account country before buying.
- Read the card’s terms: denominations, activation rules, expiration language, and redemption restrictions can differ by product and region.
- Give enough for the intended purchase: include tax or any price difference where applicable; sale prices may end before the recipient redeems the balance.
- Use a reputable source: keep the receipt or delivery record in case an activated code has a problem.
- Let the recipient redeem it: the recipient should enter the code while signed into the Nintendo Account that is meant to own the eventual purchase.
A gift card gives choice, not a guaranteed copy of a particular game. If the title leaves a sale before redemption, the recipient can use the funds later, but the amount may no longer cover the same product.
Sale purchase or gift card: which is better?
| Consideration | Buy the game yourself | Give an eShop card or code |
|---|---|---|
| Who owns the license? | Your Nintendo Account | The recipient’s account after they make the purchase |
| Can ownership be reassigned? | No; Nintendo says digital purchases cannot be transferred between accounts | Not applicable—the recipient buys directly on their own account |
| Recipient’s choice | You select the title, edition, and timing | The recipient selects a game or other eligible content |
| Sale-price certainty | You can lock in the listed price while the promotion is live | The recipient may redeem after the sale ends, so the same amount may buy less |
| Region risk | Your store and account must support the purchase | The card must match the recipient’s account country and stated redemption region |
| Best use | Your own account, or play on a console where your virtual game card is intentionally shared | A real gift that should remain on another person’s account |
If the recipient has asked for a particular game at a known sale price, you face a trade-off: buying now preserves the discount but leaves ownership with you; sending funds preserves the recipient’s ownership but leaves the final price and timing to them.

Account prerequisite
The buyer needs a Nintendo Account that has accessed Nintendo eShop on a Switch 2 or Switch at least once. If the account has never opened eShop on a compatible console, complete that first and then return to the Nintendo.com purchase flow.
Payment methods
Nintendo lists cards, eShop cards, and PayPal in certain countries. A country’s Nintendo Store accepts cards corresponding to that country, so a payment card issued elsewhere may not work even when the account can browse the store. Check the local store’s payment choices at checkout rather than assuming that a method available in the United States is available everywhere.
Purchase availability
Nintendo’s purchase instructions note that the choices shown can vary with a title’s release status and eligibility. A game announced for a future date, a product unavailable in your region, or a title with a particular account requirement may not show the same buy options as a released, eligible game.

Refunds, cancellations, and sale timing
Nintendo’s Americas purchase FAQ describes digital sales as final. It says pre-orders can be canceled before payment is processed and the game is pre-loaded, which can occur up to seven days before release. Those are Nintendo’s stated policy conditions; applicable law and the current local purchase terms may affect an individual dispute.
Before confirming a discounted purchase, verify the account, edition, platform, and price. A mistaken account selection is especially important because the resulting license cannot be transferred. If you have a specific refund problem, contact Nintendo Support and review the terms shown for your country rather than assuming a general cooling-off period applies.

Buying on the wrong profile
On a shared console, multiple profiles can look similar at checkout. Stop before payment and identify the Nintendo Account email or account name currently signed in. If the purchase is intended as a gift, do not complete it on your own account.
Assuming a family group combines purchases
Family or supervised-account relationships do not turn separate purchase histories into one transferable library. The buying account remains the owner, even when accounts share a console or family settings.

Using a card from the wrong country
A code intended for one country may not redeem on an account set to another country. Ask the recipient which country is set on the Nintendo Account, then buy a card whose terms explicitly support that country.
Relying on an expired sale post
Prices and end dates are volatile. Reopen the live Nintendo listing immediately before payment, even if a friend, price tracker, or article displays a discount.
A decision process for your situation
- Decide who must own the game. If it must belong to another person, rule out buying it on your account.
- Check the live listing. Record the current price and sale end date for the exact edition.
- Check the recipient’s country. Confirm the Nintendo Account country before selecting a gift card or code.
- Choose the method. Buy directly for your own account, or give region-compatible funds for the recipient to purchase.
- Verify the final screen. Confirm account identity, title, edition, price, and payment source before authorizing the transaction.
- Save proof. Keep the receipt for a direct purchase or the activation record for a gift code.
Frequently asked questions
Can I transfer a digital Switch game to someone else?
No. Nintendo says digital purchases cannot be transferred from one Nintendo Account to another. Console sharing through a loaded virtual game card is different from transferring the license.
Can I gift Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers to a friend?
No. Nintendo says vouchers cannot be gifted, can be redeemed only by the purchasing account, and are no longer available for new purchase.
Can a second profile play my digital game?
Yes, when the virtual game card is loaded on that console. The second profile receives play access on that console, while your account remains the owner.
Is an eShop gift card the same as gifting a game?
No. A gift card or code gives the recipient funds to choose and buy content on their own account. It does not transfer a game that you already purchased.
Why does a Nintendo eShop price differ by country?
Nintendo’s stores, payment methods, product availability, and redemption rules are regional. Check the recipient’s account country and the local Nintendo store before purchasing.
Bottom line for buyers and gift-givers
Use Nintendo’s live Sales & Deals listing to verify the exact discount and end date. Buy a digital game on your own account only when you are comfortable with that account retaining the license. For a genuine gift, use a gift card or code that matches the recipient’s country and let them redeem it on their own account. Game Vouchers cannot be gifted, and virtual game-card sharing provides console access—not ownership transfer.
