The Nintendo Australia commercial featuring former world No. 1 tennis player Lleyton Hewitt and his son Cruz is a Nintendo Switch Sports advertisement from April 2022. It is not confirmed as a commercial for Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, the separate Nintendo Switch 2 game scheduled for 22 October 2026.
Which game appears in the Hewitt commercial?
Contemporaneous coverage published in April 2022 identifies the advertisement as a promotion for Nintendo Switch Sports. Nintendo Life reported that Lleyton and Cruz Hewitt demonstrate the game’s motion controls and two-player play, with tennis and bowling among the activities shown or discussed. Nintendo Wire also dated the campaign to April 2022, while MKAU Gaming described it as a father-and-son challenge built around real-world movements and mentioned tennis, volleyball, bowling and badminton.

The distinction matters because Nintendo is also promoting a different title called Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. The Resort name belongs to a Nintendo Switch 2 product announced for release on 22 October 2026. Official Resort announcements dated 12 June and 9 October 2026 describe a 12-sport game, an introduction video and a television commercial, but do not name Lleyton or Cruz Hewitt.
What happens in the 2022 advertisement?
Lleyton and Cruz compete using motion controls
The commercial presents the Hewitts playing together rather than simply appearing in a conventional celebrity endorsement. Players swing, serve or move a Joy-Con to control on-screen sports, making the father-son competition a demonstration of how the game translates physical gestures into gameplay.

Tennis and bowling are central examples
Tennis is the most obvious fit for Lleyton Hewitt’s career, but the reporting also highlights bowling and describes the broader range of sports available. The campaign’s appeal is the contrast between a professional tennis player and a family-oriented game that lets two people compete in several disciplines using the same console.
When did Nintendo Switch Sports launch in Australia?
Nintendo Switch Sports launched in Australia on 29 April 2022 for Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s Australian product information lists local play for up to four players and online play. The game uses Joy-Con motion controls and includes tennis, badminton, basketball, volleyball, bowling, golf, football and chambara in the current lineup described on the product page.

The launch lineup expanded after release. In a Nintendo developer interview, director Yoshikazu Yamashita said the sequel retained tennis, bowling and chambara from earlier Wii Sports games and added volleyball, badminton and soccer; the interview also said golf would arrive in a later update.

Can you still buy and play the game from the commercial?
Yes. The product promoted by the Hewitt commercial is Nintendo Switch Sports for Nintendo Switch, released in Australia in 2022. It supports local multiplayer and online play, so a buyer can use the same core features demonstrated in the advertisement, provided the necessary console, controllers and game access are available.
Do you need the Leg Strap?
No Leg Strap is required for tennis. Nintendo says the accessory is used for football play. The physical version of Nintendo Switch Sports includes a Leg Strap, and Nintendo also makes the accessory available separately. For tennis, players use the standard Joy-Con motion controls.
Rank #4
- 6 sports: Baseball, run's jump, goalkeeper, tennis, bowling & rafting.
- 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)
- Varied game modes - Solo or multiplayer for up to 8 players.

What is known about the 2026 Resort television commercial?
Nintendo’s 9 October 2026 Resort announcement confirms that the company released an introduction video and a TVCM for Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. Its 12 June announcement sets the Nintendo Switch 2 game’s release date for 22 October 2026 and describes 12 sports controlled with Joy-Con 2.
Those official announcements do not identify Lleyton Hewitt or Cruz Hewitt as participants. Based on the documented campaign material, the accurate attribution is therefore: the Hewitts promoted Nintendo Switch Sports in Australia in April 2022; their appearance in a Resort commercial has not been verified by the cited official announcements.
Quick Recap
Why the confusion is easy to make
- Both titles use the “Switch Sports” name and feature motion-controlled sporting events.
- Both include tennis, making a tennis star’s appearance seem naturally connected to either campaign.
- The original advertisement predates the Resort announcement by more than four years, while online posts can omit the year and shorten the product name.
- Resort is a Nintendo Switch 2 title, whereas the Hewitt campaign is tied to the original Nintendo Switch release.
