Buy a dedicated Ninja air fryer if crisp, browned food is the main reason you are shopping. Choose a Ninja multicooker when you need several pot-based methods—such as slow cooking, steaming, searing or braising—in one appliance. If you want both styles, compare a specific hybrid model, not the word “multicooker” alone.
Ninja uses “multicooker” for appliances with substantially different designs and functions. The 8.5-quart PossibleCooker Pro MC1001 is a pot-focused appliance, while the 6.3-quart Combi SFP701 combines multicooker functions with air-frying and oven-style modes. The model number, capacity, layout and exact function list matter more than the category label.

A dedicated air fryer is a focused appliance built around circulating hot air around food in a basket. In Ninja’s listed lineup, the emphasis is on air-frying and crisping rather than on replacing a saucepan or stockpot. The catalog includes both single-basket and dual-basket designs, so “Ninja air fryer” still covers more than one physical layout.

Single-basket format
The Ninja Air Fryer Pro AF181 is a representative single-basket model. The US catalog lists a 6.5-quart capacity, six functions and Max Crisp technology. A single basket gives you one cooking zone: useful when the meal is one batch or when all components can share the same temperature and timing. The catalog snapshot showed a price of $119.99; treat that figure as a time-specific listing rather than a permanent price.
Dual-basket format
The Ninja DualZone DZ901 is listed at 10 quarts, with two baskets, six functions and DualZone technology. Two zones can be relevant when you routinely cook separate foods or need different settings in the same meal. The catalog snapshot showed $219.99–$229.99. Capacity is the combined listing for the model; check how the manufacturer describes each basket before assuming a particular split.
What the air-fryer label does not tell you
The category name does not specify basket dimensions, the exact six functions on a particular model, or how much food fits comfortably in one layer. Read the model page for those details. A larger total-quart figure can describe two smaller baskets rather than one large uninterrupted cooking area, which changes how you plan batches.
What “Ninja multicooker” can mean
“Multicooker” is a broad family name, not a single appliance design. Ninja’s catalog includes pot-focused cookers and hybrids that add an air-fry or oven-style compartment. Before buying, list the methods you need and match them to the model’s published functions.
Pot-focused example: PossibleCooker Pro MC1001
The Ninja PossibleCooker Pro MC1001 is listed as an 8.5-quart multicooker. Its product details name slow cook, sous vide, sear/sauté, braise, steam, bake, proof and keep warm. This is the sort of model to consider when your routine involves soups, stews, sauces, braises or other foods that start and finish in a cooking pot.
Those listed modes do not establish that the MC1001 pressure-cooks or air-fries. If either function is essential, it must appear explicitly in the product details for the exact model you are considering.
Hybrid example: Combi SFP701
The Ninja Combi SFP701 is listed at 6.3 quarts with 14 cooking functions. The catalog names Combi Meals, Combi Crisp, steam, rice/pasta, air fry, bake, broil, pizza, toast, slow cook and sous vide. (The published list contains 14 functions; the examples above group related everyday uses.) This model is the relevant comparison for shoppers who want pot-style methods and an integrated air-frying/oven approach in one appliance.

Because the SFP701 combines functions that appear across both categories, comparing it with a dedicated air fryer is more useful than comparing “air fryer” with “multicooker” in the abstract. Its 6.3-quart capacity also shows why a multicooker label cannot be used to predict size.

Choose by the meals you actually cook
If crisping is the main reason you are buying
Start with a dedicated air fryer. Its listed purpose and modes are centered on air-frying and crisping, so you are not paying for cooking methods you may never use. Select between a single basket and dual baskets based on how often you need separate foods or settings, not simply on the highest combined quart number.
- Pick a single-basket design when one cooking zone is sufficient and you prefer a straightforward layout.
- Pick a dual-basket design when separate foods, temperatures or timings are a regular part of dinner.
- Confirm the exact modes on the model page; “six functions” is a count, not a promise that every model has the same six.
If soups, stews, braises or slow-cooked dishes dominate
Look at a pot-focused multicooker such as the MC1001. Its listed slow-cook, sear/sauté, braise, steam and keep-warm functions align with meals that are prepared in a vessel rather than spread in a shallow basket. Sous vide, proof and bake are also listed, expanding the possible uses beyond one-pot dinners.
Do not assume that a pot-focused multicooker can reproduce the dry, exposed-air workflow of a dedicated basket fryer. Air frying must be named in the exact product specification.
If you need both pot cooking and crisping
Compare a hybrid model such as the SFP701 directly with the dedicated air fryer you would otherwise buy. The SFP701’s catalog listing explicitly includes air fry and Combi Crisp alongside steam, slow cook, sous vide and other modes. That makes it a genuine two-style candidate, whereas a multicooker listing without an air-fry function is not.
The trade-off is specialization. A hybrid may be the best fit when appliance count and versatility matter more than having a dedicated basket layout. A dedicated fryer may be the clearer choice when crisping is performed frequently and other functions are occasional.
If you are replacing several appliances
Write down every appliance you hope to retire and match each job to a named function. For example, “steam” is different from “air fry,” and “bake” is different from “broil.” The MC1001 list covers several pot-based methods but does not list air fry; the SFP701 lists both air fry and oven-style modes. This exercise prevents a broad category label from creating an expectation the model does not meet.

Capacity figures are model specifications, not a universal measure of usable cooking area. The AF181’s 6.5 quarts, DZ901’s 10 quarts, MC1001’s 8.5 quarts and SFP701’s 6.3 quarts belong to different layouts and cooking systems.

- 4-IN-1 VERSATILITY: Includes 4 versatile cooking programs: Air Fry, Roast, Reheat, and Dehydrate.
- WIDE TEMPERATURE RANGE: 105°F-400°F allows you to gently remove moisture from foods or quickly cook and crisp foods with convection heat.
- AIR FRY FAVORITES: Now enjoy guilt-free food. Air fry with up to 75% less fat than traditional frying methods. Tested against hand-cut, deep-fried French fries.
- FAMILY-SIZED CAPACITY: 4-quart ceramic-coated nonstick basket and crisper plate fit 2 lbs of French fries.
- DEHYDRATE: Create flat, chip-like dehydrated foods for fun, homemade snacks. The combination of low fan speed and low temperature enables thorough dehydration.
Single basket versus two baskets
A single basket gives one shared cooking space. Two baskets divide the appliance into separate zones, which can be useful for a main and side that do not share settings. The DZ901 is explicitly a two-basket, 10-quart model. Do not compare its combined number directly with a single-basket model without considering the size and shape of each compartment.
Pot capacity versus basket capacity
A multicooker’s quart rating describes its cooking vessel or system, while an air fryer’s rating describes its basket arrangement. Foods that need stirring, liquid or room for a simmer behave differently from foods spread for hot-air circulation. Choose the layout that matches your recipes rather than treating every quart as interchangeable.
Check the physical footprint before ordering
The catalog evidence establishes capacities and functions but does not provide a universal countertop-size comparison. Use the exact model’s dimensions, clearance requirements and electrical information from its current listing before purchase. A larger capacity or a hybrid design may occupy a different amount of counter and storage space than its quart number suggests.

Functions to verify on the exact model page
Use this checklist while comparing listings. A missing function should be treated as unavailable unless the manufacturer explicitly lists it for that model.
- Air fry: required when basket-style hot-air cooking is a core use.
- Max Crisp or Combi Crisp: these are model-listed technologies or modes, not interchangeable names for every Ninja appliance.
- Slow cook: important for long, low-temperature pot cooking; listed for MC1001 and SFP701.
- Steam: listed for MC1001 and SFP701, but verify the exact program and accessories in the current details.
- Sear/sauté and braise: listed for MC1001; useful when you want browning or braising in a pot-based workflow.
- Sous vide: listed for MC1001 and SFP701.
- Bake, broil, toast or pizza: explicitly listed for SFP701; do not transfer those functions to another multicooker.
- Pressure cooking: never infer it from “multicooker.” It must be named in the model’s function list.
A practical buying process
- Rank your three most frequent cooking jobs. Put air-frying, slow cooking, steaming, searing, baking and other methods in order of actual use.
- Decide whether you need one zone or separate zones. One basket favors a single shared batch; two baskets can separate foods and settings.
- Set a capacity target, then inspect the layout. Compare the basket or pot arrangement, not only the total quart figure.
- Shortlist exact model numbers. For example, AF181 and DZ901 represent different dedicated-air-fryer layouts, while MC1001 and SFP701 represent materially different multicookers.
- Match every must-have job to a listed function. If air fry, steam or pressure cook is essential, find that wording in the exact listing.
- Check the current US or regional listing. Verify price, stock, dimensions, included accessories and support information immediately before buying because catalog details can change.
- Choose the least complicated appliance that covers your real routine. Extra modes have value only when they replace an appliance or solve a task you regularly perform.
Price, availability and support cautions
The AF181 and DZ901 prices above came from a Ninja US catalog snapshot. The AF181 was shown at $119.99, while the DZ901 was shown at $219.99–$229.99. The supplied catalog material did not state prices for MC1001 or SFP701. None of these figures should be treated as a permanent US price, a worldwide price or a guarantee of current stock.
When you are ready to order, open the current listing for the exact model and region. Confirm that the capacity, function list and included parts still match your needs. Ninja’s catalog support information indicates that support, accessories and replacement parts are available through its customer channels, but compatibility must be checked by model number.

Assuming every multicooker pressure-cooks
“Multicooker” describes a range of appliances. MC1001’s listed functions include slow cook, sous vide, sear/sauté, braise, steam, bake, proof and keep warm; pressure cooking is not named in that list. Look for an explicit pressure-cook program if that is a requirement.
Assuming every multicooker air-fries
The SFP701 explicitly lists air fry and Combi Crisp, but the MC1001 listing does not. A multicooker can be pot-focused, hybrid or something else. Use the exact model page rather than the category name.

Choosing the largest quart number automatically
A 10-quart dual-basket appliance and an 8.5-quart pot serve different workflows. The DZ901’s total capacity is divided between two baskets; the MC1001 is a pot-based cooker. Think about food shape, batch arrangement and whether you need separate zones.
Treating marketing features as test results
Max Crisp, DualZone and Combi Crisp are catalog-listed technologies or modes. The available material does not establish that one category is faster, more energy-efficient, more durable or better-tasting than another. Those outcomes depend on the recipe, load and model, and would require controlled comparison testing.

Example: weeknight frozen food and vegetables
If most meals involve crisping frozen items, vegetables or similarly basket-friendly foods, the AF181 is the simpler category match. If you often cook two foods with different settings, investigate the DZ901’s two-basket layout. The choice is about workflow and separation, not a claim that either model produces superior results.
Example: family-sized soups, braises and sauces
A pot-focused option such as the 8.5-quart MC1001 aligns with the listed slow-cook, sear/sauté, braise and steam methods. Its function list should be checked against your recipes, especially if you also expect air frying.
Example: one appliance for crisping and pot methods
The 6.3-quart SFP701 is the catalog example that explicitly combines air fry with slow cook, steam, sous vide and oven-style programs. Compare its capacity and layout with a dedicated air fryer before deciding whether one hybrid appliance better fits your counter and cooking routine.
Example: uncertain needs
When you are not sure, record what you cooked over a typical week and count the jobs that truly require a basket, a pot or separate zones. Buy around the most frequent jobs, then verify that every occasional “nice to have” appears in the selected model’s specifications.
Bottom-line decision
A dedicated Ninja air fryer is the focused choice for air-frying and crisping. The AF181 illustrates a single-basket approach, while the DZ901 illustrates a larger dual-basket approach. A Ninja multicooker is the better direction when pot-based methods are central, but the model determines what you actually get: MC1001 is listed as an 8.5-quart pot-focused multicooker, while SFP701 is a 6.3-quart hybrid that explicitly adds air-frying and oven-style functions. Compare those exact models, capacities and function lists before treating any price or availability as current.
