Nine Motorcycle Gadgets Worth Carrying—What Actually Helps Riders

The most useful motorcycle gadgets solve a specific problem: keeping tire pressure visible, making navigation audible without handling a phone, improving conspicuity, or helping you complete a pre-ride check. They do not make riding safe by themselves. In the United States, start with a properly fitted helmet carrying a DOT mark, and check tire pressure and tread depth before every ride, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) advises.

NHTSA reports 6,228 motorcyclists were killed in the U.S. in 2024, representing 16% of all traffic fatalities. Per vehicle miles traveled, motorcyclists were almost 27 times as likely to die and almost five times as likely to be injured as passenger-car occupants. Those figures explain why the best “cool” gadget is one that supports disciplined habits rather than distracts from them.

What counts as a useful motorcycle gadget?

A gadget earns a place on a motorcycle when it addresses a repeatable riding task and remains compatible with your bike, helmet, phone and clothing. Treat the nine items below as a practical toolkit, not a ranking or a claim that every rider needs every item. The first three have specific manufacturer documentation; the others are optional accessories whose value depends on your routes, climate and riding style.

Gadget Problem it addresses What it cannot replace
DOT-compliant helmet Head protection and correct fit Safe speed, training or attentive riding
Motorcycle TPMS Ongoing awareness of pressure changes Checking pressure and tread before every ride
Bluetooth helmet intercom Navigation audio and rider/passenger or group communication Visual attention and hand signals when appropriate
Digital tire-pressure gauge A precise check at home or at a fuel stop A permanently mounted monitor
Tread-depth gauge Quickly measuring remaining tread Professional tire inspection for damage or age
Reflective conspicuity gear Making a rider easier to notice Other drivers’ attention or right-of-way
Auxiliary visibility lighting Adding a deliberate lighting signal where legal Compliance with local lighting laws
Weatherproof phone/GPS mount Keeping navigation visible and accessible Looking at a screen while moving
USB power and emergency beacon Keeping devices charged and signaling when stopped Calling emergency services or carrying repair skills

1. A properly fitted, DOT-compliant helmet

A helmet is protective equipment first and an electronic platform second. NHTSA says a DOT mark on the back indicates that the manufacturer certifies compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 218 (FMVSS No. 218). NHTSA does not approve individual helmets; it relies on manufacturer self-certification and can test helmets for compliance. Read the agency’s helmet selection guidance before shopping.

Fit checklist

  • Try the exact size and shape, wearing the eyewear or communication speakers you will use.
  • The helmet should sit level, with the front just above the eyebrows, and the cheek pads should contact your face without painful pressure points.
  • Buckle the retention strap and keep the helmet on for several minutes; movement or a gap at the brow indicates a poor fit.
  • Avoid novelty helmets that lack the protection and coverage of a compliant motorcycle helmet.

NHTSA’s older Countermeasures That Work summary cites studies from 2003–2019 estimating that helmet use reduced rider fatalities by 22%–42% and brain injuries by 41%–69%. Those are ranges from earlier studies, not a new 2024 measurement, but they reinforce why electronics should never determine your helmet choice.

2. Motorcycle tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS)

TPMS is the strongest gadget case in this list because it turns an invisible maintenance issue into a visible reading while you ride. NHTSA recommends checking pressure and tread depth before every ride; a monitor adds alerts between those checks rather than replacing them.

As one documented example, motogadget’s mo.pressure uses two valve-mounted sensors that send data by Bluetooth to an app. The product page describes alerts when pressure diverges from a rider-set value, IP68 certification and a battery-life claim of up to two years. The U.S. listing specifies Schrader/AV valves. These are manufacturer specifications, so verify the current listing and your motorcycle’s valve type before purchase.

TPMS buying and installation sequence

  1. Identify whether each wheel uses a Schrader/AV valve and confirm that the sensor’s dimensions and valve hardware fit.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s application notes for wheel clearance, pressure range, app support and operating temperature.
  3. Install the sensors securely, set the alert pressure from your motorcycle manufacturer’s recommendation, and check for leaks.
  4. Pair the sensors with the app before riding; confirm that both wheels report and that a deliberate test or pressure change triggers the expected warning.
  5. Continue a manual pre-ride inspection. A dead battery, damaged valve or lost Bluetooth connection can leave a monitor without current data.

3. Bluetooth helmet intercom

An intercom can consolidate navigation audio, rider-to-passenger conversation and group communication without reaching for a phone. Interphone’s U-COM 3 product page says it connects compatible smartphones, GPS units and TFT displays, and supports rider/passenger and motorcycle-to-motorcycle communication. It lists up to 500 metres of communication range and up to 10 hours of battery life for that model. Those figures are model-specific manufacturer claims, not universal intercom performance.

The manufacturer describes the device this way: “Bluetooth® 5.1 connectivity lets you manage conversations, phone calls, music and GPS navigation directly from your helmet.” Treat calls and music as convenience features, not safety benefits; audio can compete with traffic cues and concentration.

Compatibility questions to answer first

  • Does the clamp or adhesive mount fit your helmet shell and leave room for the visor mechanism?
  • Will the speakers fit without creating pressure points, and can the microphone sit correctly for your helmet type?
  • Are your riding partners using compatible Bluetooth profiles or a supported pairing mode?
  • Can you operate volume, voice prompts and emergency procedures without taking your eyes off the road?
  • What is the real battery duration after temperature, volume and intercom use reduce the headline figure?

4. Digital tire-pressure gauge

A handheld digital gauge is the low-tech partner to TPMS. Use it at home or at a fuel station to set cold pressures accurately, then use the monitor—if fitted—to watch for changes during a ride. Choose a gauge with a hose and chuck that can reach both valves, a readable display in your lighting conditions and a pressure range covering your motorcycle’s specification.

Measure when the tires are cold, before riding has warmed them. Compare the reading with the pressure listed by the motorcycle manufacturer, not a maximum molded into the tire sidewall. If the reading changes unexpectedly, inspect for a puncture, valve leak or temperature-related explanation before continuing.

5. Tread-depth gauge

NHTSA pairs pressure checks with tread-depth checks for a reason: pressure alone cannot reveal worn tread. A small tread-depth gauge gives you a repeatable number instead of relying on appearance. Measure in several grooves across each tire, because uneven wear can leave one area legal-looking while another is near its limit.

Also look for cuts, bulges, exposed cords, embedded objects and cracking. A gauge does not assess tire age, carcass damage or whether wear is even enough for safe handling; replace or have the tire inspected when those conditions appear.

6. Reflective vest, jacket panels or tape

Conspicuity accessories address a different problem from headlights and brakes: helping other road users notice a motorcycle and judge its position. NHTSA discusses conspicuity and protective-clothing strategies in its Countermeasures That Work guidance. Select reflective material that remains visible from the front, rear and sides, and that does not cover required signals or license markings.

Use reflective elements as a supplement to daytime lighting, lane positioning and defensive riding. Check local rules before adding colors or patterns that could be confused with emergency services, and inspect the material after washing or abrasion.

7. Auxiliary visibility lighting

Small auxiliary lights can make a motorcycle’s presence or width more apparent, particularly in poor weather or at intersections. Their usefulness depends on correct aiming, legal color and mounting, and avoiding glare for oncoming traffic. The accessory should be installed so it cannot interfere with steering, suspension travel, cooling or the original indicators.

Before installing

  • Check your state or country’s rules for auxiliary lamps, flashing modes, colors and daytime use.
  • Use a fused circuit and weather-resistant connectors appropriate for a vibrating, exposed vehicle.
  • Aim the lights after installation and recheck fasteners after the first rides.

8. Weatherproof phone or GPS mount

A secure mount keeps turn-by-turn directions available without holding a phone. The safest setup is one you program while stopped and can hear through an intercom or see briefly with a glance. Choose a mount that matches your phone case, locks mechanically, clears the controls and does not place the screen where it blocks instruments or the road.

Protect the phone from rain and vibration, and carry a backup route or paper address for areas with poor coverage. Never type, search or re-route while moving; pull over first.

9. USB power and a compact emergency beacon

A fused USB outlet or weatherproof power lead can keep a phone, GPS or intercom charged on long rides. Route wiring away from hot exhaust parts, steering pivots and pinch points, and verify that the circuit does not drain the battery when the ignition is off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A small battery-powered beacon or high-visibility light is useful when you are stopped on a dark shoulder, at a breakdown or after a minor incident. Use it only when stationary and where local law permits. It complements, rather than replaces, a charged phone, roadside-assistance plan, first-aid knowledge and the ability to move yourself and the motorcycle out of live traffic.

How to assemble the kit without buying blindly

  1. Cover protection first: buy and fit the compliant helmet before adding electronics.
  2. Build the inspection kit: carry a pressure gauge and, if useful for your maintenance routine, a tread-depth gauge.
  3. Add monitoring: choose TPMS only after confirming valve type, app support, alert settings and weather rating.
  4. Add communication: match the intercom to your helmet, phone, GPS and riding partners; test pairing at home.
  5. Improve visibility: select reflective elements or lawful auxiliary lights that do not create glare or obscure signals.
  6. Plan power and failure: protect charging cables, carry a backup navigation plan and know what you will do if any electronic device fails.

A five-minute pre-ride routine

  1. Check both tires for correct cold pressure with the gauge; review TPMS readings if installed.
  2. Inspect tread, sidewalls, valves and visible damage.
  3. Confirm the helmet fits correctly, the strap is fastened and the visor is clean.
  4. Test brakes, lights, indicators, horn and the intercom’s battery or pairing.
  5. Secure luggage and mounts, start navigation while stopped, and put the phone away before moving.

Electronics are most valuable when they make this routine easier to repeat. If a gadget adds setup complexity, blocks a control or tempts you to look away from traffic, it has failed its basic purpose.
