Nikon says actual endurance varies with battery condition, the interval between shots and selected menu options. The still-photo test used default settings, one photograph every 30 seconds, a NIKKOR Z 24–70mm f/4 S lens and a test temperature of 23 °C ±3 °C. For video, the 85-minute figure is total estimated footage, not necessarily one uninterrupted recording. Nikon says a single clip can run up to 125 minutes, but increased camera temperature may stop recording sooner.

Which setting makes the biggest documented difference?
Turn on Energy saving (photo mode) when conserving power matters. In Nikon’s test, the setting corresponded to about 50 more shots in viewfinder-only use (380 rather than 330) and about 40 more in monitor-only use (390 rather than 350). These are results under the stated test conditions, not a guaranteed gain for every shoot.

Nikon does not quantify the battery cost of each factor, so there is no reliable per-setting estimate to apply to a particular outing. Nikon’s endurance guidance describes them as influences on actual battery life.
How to make a Z5II battery last longer
- Enable Energy saving (photo mode). Use the camera’s Energy saving setting in photo mode; Nikon’s published figures show higher still-photo counts with it on.
- Avoid unnecessary half-presses and repeated focusing. Let the camera focus when needed rather than repeatedly activating autofocus while waiting.
- Limit wireless use and optional accessories. Switch off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and disconnect accessories when they are not needed.
- Choose capture settings for the job. If RAW files or slow shutter speeds are not required for a particular shoot, using alternatives may help reduce drain; Nikon does not state how much.
- Reduce repeated zooming where practical. Frame efficiently rather than repeatedly changing focal length.
- Keep batteries warm in cold conditions. Low ambient temperatures reduce endurance; carry a spare close to your body and swap it in as needed.
- Care for the battery. Nikon advises keeping battery contacts clean and using a charged battery soon after charging, since it loses charge when unused.
Which power option should you carry?
The Z5II uses an EN-EL15c rechargeable Li-ion battery. Nikon also lists EN-EL15b and EN-EL15a batteries as compatible, but says they provide fewer pictures per charge. Choose the option that fits the length and weight of your shoot:
