The original Nikon Z 5 is a full-frame, interchangeable-lens camera built around Nikon’s Z mount. On paper, it offers a 24.3-megapixel FX sensor, five-axis in-camera stabilization, two UHS-II SD card slots, and 4K video. Those specifications make it a camera worth considering for someone entering Nikon’s full-frame mirrorless system, but they do not establish how it performs in real shooting. This is a specification-grounded review, not a hands-on test.
What the Nikon Z 5 offers
Nikon specifies a 35.9 × 23.9 mm FX-format CMOS sensor with 24.3 effective megapixels and its EXPEED 6 image processor. The official specifications also list ISO 100–51,200, with expanded equivalents. These figures describe the camera’s stated capabilities; they do not by themselves establish image quality, high-ISO detail, or noise performance. Nikon’s Z 5 specifications

All entries in the table are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. In particular, the listed autofocus points and stabilization rating do not establish focus hit rates, keeper rates, or the shutter speeds a photographer can reliably use. Nikon’s product-history overview also summarizes the Z 5’s features, but labels its history by decade rather than providing an exact launch date in the cited material. Nikon’s camera-history overview
Autofocus and stabilization: what the numbers do—and don’t—tell you
Autofocus features
Nikon lists a 273-point hybrid autofocus system and Eye-Detection AF and Animal-Detection AF. These are useful capabilities to look for in a full-frame camera, but the specification page does not show how reliably the Z 5 detects and tracks people or animals, or how it performs with subjects in motion. Nikon’s Digitutor provides operating tutorials for features such as eye and animal detection; tutorials explain use, not independent performance. Nikon Z 5 Digitutor

In-camera VR
The camera uses five-axis sensor-shift vibration reduction. Nikon describes its effect as equivalent to a shutter speed 5.0 stops faster, using the manufacturer’s stated framing. Treat that as a Nikon specification, not a guarantee for every lens, focal length, photographer, or subject. Stabilization can help counter camera movement; it does not freeze a moving subject. To judge practical results, look for independent tests that name the lens, shutter speeds, and shooting conditions.
Cards, lenses, and system compatibility
Dual SD slots
The Z 5 has two SD card slots and supports UHS-II SDHC and SDXC cards. That gives buyers a documented dual-slot configuration, but the specifications alone do not establish buffer depth or sustained shooting behavior. Confirm the card type and your intended recording workflow before choosing media; no particular card capacity or brand has been tested here.

Z-mount and F-mount lenses
Nikon says its Z-mount NIKKOR lenses are compatible with the camera. F-mount lenses require a mount adapter, and Nikon notes that restrictions may apply. Owners of Nikon DSLR lenses should check compatibility for each exact lens and adapter combination rather than assuming every feature will work. Nikon’s Digitutor includes material on FTZ lens use, but it is operational guidance rather than a compatibility guarantee for every F-mount lens.

Nikon lists 4K UHD recording at 30p, 25p, and 24p, plus Full HD up to 60p, in MOV or MP4 formats. The camera also has a 3.2-inch tilting touch display and an approximately 3.69-million-dot OLED EVF. These details establish available modes and display specifications, not the video experience in practice. The cited specification information does not settle questions such as 4K crop, heat or recording limits, rolling shutter, autofocus behavior during recording, or battery endurance. Video-focused buyers should seek tests that address those points.

Who might consider the Nikon Z 5?
The Z 5 may suit a buyer looking for a relatively straightforward entry into Nikon’s FX-format Z system, especially if full-frame capture, a built-in stabilization system, two SD slots, or access to Nikon Z lenses matters to their setup. Existing Nikon DSLR owners may also find the adapter route relevant, subject to exact lens compatibility. None of those features proves that the Z 5 is better value or a stronger performer than another camera.
Its listed high-speed continuous rate is 4.5 fps, and the specifications cannot answer whether that pace, its buffer, or its autofocus behavior will suit a particular kind of action photography. Likewise, a listed video mode does not make the camera a known fit for a specific production workflow. Match the camera’s documented features to your needs, then consult independent testing for the performance questions that matter to you.

- Still-image performance: Look for independent examples and tests covering image quality and high-ISO output.
- Autofocus: Check tests with people, animals, and moving subjects, not only focus-point counts.
- Stabilization: Seek results that identify the lens and shutter speeds used.
- Shooting pace: Confirm sustained burst and buffer behavior if you photograph action.
- Video: Check crop, heat or recording limits, rolling shutter, and focus behavior for your intended use.
- Day-to-day use: Assess grip, menus, battery endurance, and handling in independent reviews or in person.
- System cost: Compare current body and kit offers alongside the lenses you expect to use; confirm adapter compatibility if you plan to bring F-mount glass.
How this review is scoped
Nikon’s product specifications, camera-history overview, and Digitutor support the feature and compatibility descriptions here. They do not provide independent evidence for image quality, autofocus reliability, battery endurance, ergonomics, video behavior, or current value. Nikon’s decade-based history places the Z 5 in its 2020s product history, but the cited material does not establish an exact launch date.
