Nikon Memory Cards: What’s Included and How to Choose the Right One

Usually, you should not expect a memory card to come with a Nikon camera. Nikon’s package lists for the Z 8, Z fc and Z 9 say that “Memory cards are sold separately.” That does not establish a rule for every Nikon model or every retailer bundle, so check the exact camera’s in-box list and the seller’s offer before buying.

What Nikon’s package lists say

Nikon’s standard package documentation is explicit for several models, but the examples apply only to those cameras. Retailers may add accessories to a bundle, and Nikon notes that some Z fc package contents vary by country or region.

Camera What the package information establishes Media information
Nikon Z 8 Nikon’s package list says memory cards are sold separately. Nikon Z 8 package information Nikon UK lists a 660 GB Type B CFexpress card as an optional accessory; that does not mean it is included in the box. Nikon UK optional accessory
Nikon Z fc Nikon’s package list says memory cards are sold separately; it also notes that some package contents vary by country or region. Nikon Z fc package information Check the exact model’s documentation for supported media.
Nikon Z 9 Nikon’s package list says memory cards are sold separately. Nikon Z 9 package information Check the exact model’s documentation for supported media.
Nikon Z 30 The cited product specification identifies supported media formats, not whether every seller’s bundle includes a card. Nikon Z 30 specifications SD, SDHC and SDXC.

These examples do not establish an all-model Nikon policy. A card shown in a product photo or accessory carousel is not proof that it is included: use the seller’s written included-items list for the specific offer you are purchasing.

How to check whether your camera includes a card

  1. Identify the exact camera. Note the full model and generation, such as Z 6 or Z 6II; similar names do not guarantee identical slots or compatibility.
  2. Read Nikon’s package contents for that model and region. Look for an explicit memory-card inclusion or the statement that cards are sold separately.
  3. Check the retailer’s bundle description. Confirm that the card is listed among the included items for the exact offer, rather than only appearing in images or suggested accessories.
  4. Verify the card format and compatibility. Consult the camera manual and Nikon’s approved memory-card information for the exact model before purchase.

How to choose a compatible memory card

Start with the camera’s supported slot and media format, then consider capacity and sustained write performance in light of what you plan to record. Nikon’s Z 30 specifications, for example, name SD, SDHC and SDXC media, while Nikon lists Type B CFexpress as an optional accessory for the Z 8. Those examples are not interchangeable recommendations for other Nikon cameras.

  • Match the card to the exact model and slot; do not assume a card that fits one Nikon camera will work in another.
  • Use the manual and Nikon compatibility guidance to check approved cards and any recording requirements relevant to your use.
  • Choose capacity and write performance for your photo or video workload only after confirming the supported format. The cited sources do not establish one universal speed or capacity for Nikon cameras.

For a Z 8 setup, Nikon’s optional accessory listing identifies Type B CFexpress. For a camera that supports SD-family media, check whether its documentation specifies SD, SDHC or SDXC and confirm the card’s suitability for that model. Avoid treating microSD with an adapter, a particular speed rating or a single capacity as a universal Nikon solution.
