Nike is not describing a plan to sell less across the company. It is reducing supply of selected classic footwear franchises, shifting its mix toward new products, repositioning NIKE Brand Digital around full-price sales, and rebuilding wholesale distribution. The aim is to make room for newness and strengthen the brand; “restore prestige” is an interpretation of that aim, not Nike’s own name for the strategy.
Why is Nike cutting back on classic sneakers?
Nike says it is managing down supply of certain footwear franchises so it can rebalance the portfolio and make capacity for newer, innovative products. At its 2025 annual meeting, CEO Elliott Hill described the approach as emphasizing performance products while reducing classic franchises. He said, “This change is about putting sport and sport culture back at the center of everything we do.”
That is a selective product reset, not an announced target to shrink all Nike sales or abandon classic shoes. The company’s FY2025 Form 10-K says its broader strategy is to pursue sustainable, profitable long-term growth by leading with sport, creating must-have products, building consumer connections, and delivering compelling experiences online and at retail.
Is Nike trying to stop discounting?
Nike says it wants NIKE Brand Digital to function as a full-price platform, but its inventory cleanup has involved discounting rather than an immediate end to promotions. The FY2025 filing says Nike increased markdowns in NIKE Direct and offered higher discounts and sales returns to wholesale partners to clear inventory and create room for new products.

The distinction is between the intended marketplace position and the transition required to get there: full-price digital positioning is a goal, while markdowns and wholesale discounts were tools used to address existing inventory. Nike cautions that those actions have hurt revenue and gross margin and may continue to do so, while also increasing demand-creation expense. The company says it expects the changes to reignite brand momentum over the long term; that remains Nike’s expectation, not a demonstrated outcome.
Why is Nike leaning back into wholesale stores?
Nike’s plan pairs a full-price role for its own digital channel with reinvestment in wholesale distribution. In practical terms, it is not relying on a single route to customers: wholesale partners remain part of its marketplace even as Nike works to improve the position of NIKE Brand Digital.

The transition can carry a near-term cost. Nike reported higher wholesale discounts and sales returns while clearing inventory, and it attributed part of its FY2025 gross-margin decline to discounts and channel mix. The filing does not isolate how much of the reported change came from this strategy versus other business conditions.
What did the strategy mean for Nike’s FY2025 results?
In fiscal 2025, which ended May 31, 2025, NIKE, Inc. reported lower revenue, sales through both major channels, and gross margin than in fiscal 2024. The figures show the difficult financial context in which Nike is resetting products and channels; they do not, by themselves, establish that the reset caused every decline.

Nike attributed the gross-margin decline primarily to higher discounts, changes in channel mix, and higher inventory-obsolescence reserves, partly offset by lower product costs. Its filing also cites lower traffic across NIKE Direct and reduced supply of some footwear products, alongside increased direct markdowns, wholesale discounts, and sales returns. Together, those details explain why an effort to clean up the marketplace can coincide with falling sales and weaker margins.

The available evidence points to a transition underway, not a confirmed turnaround. FY2025 financial results were weaker than FY2024 across the measures above. At the 2025 annual meeting, Hill and CFO Matthew Friend described progress in management terms: Hill discussed the product reset, while Friend said the company had taken aggressive inventory actions, remained on plan for the fourth quarter, and had holiday orders above the prior year. Those are management-reported signals, not independent proof that the strategy has succeeded.

The clearest test will be whether Nike can make new sport-focused products and its full-price positioning more compelling while improving performance across its channels. The cited filings state the company’s objectives and disclose the near-term financial costs; they do not establish that brand prestige has been restored.
