Possibly—but that is an analyst’s forecast, not a settled result. Nike’s fiscal 2027 first-quarter revenue fell 4% year over year, and the company expects revenue to decline by a high-single-digit percentage for the full fiscal year. The quarter did bring higher gross margin and $0.48 in diluted earnings per share, but the mix of results and Nike’s outlook underpin the concern.
What Nike reported in its first quarter
Nike’s fiscal 2027 first quarter ended August 31, 2026, and the company reported results on October 1. This is Nike’s fiscal year, not calendar 2026’s first quarter. Revenue was $11.2 billion, down 4% from the year-earlier quarter on a reported basis and down 5% currency-neutral. Diluted earnings per share were $0.48.

Gross margin rose 60 basis points to 42.8%, while net income declined 2% to $712 million from $727 million a year earlier. The improvement in margin is a positive, but it did not prevent lower revenue and net income.

Global NIKE Brand wholesale revenue was $6.8 billion, down 1% both reported and currency-neutral. NIKE Direct revenue was $4.1 billion, down 8% reported and 9% currency-neutral. Within Direct, NIKE Brand Digital sales fell 13%, and sales at Nike-owned stores fell 5%.

These figures should not be confused with TheStreet’s separate report that North American sales to retailers rose 9%. That is a regional retailer-sales figure; Nike’s wholesale result covers its global NIKE Brand business.
Why an analyst sees a possible high-water mark
TheStreet reported that a Morgan Stanley note called the quarter “likely the year’s high-water mark.” In context, the phrase means the analyst believes Nike may not post a stronger quarter later in fiscal 2027. It is a forecast, not a conclusion established by the results. The underlying Morgan Stanley note and its full reasoning are not available in the cited reporting, so the precise basis for that call cannot be assessed here.

The company’s own outlook is consistent with caution: Nike forecast a high-single-digit percentage decline in fiscal 2027 revenue. Its CFO, Dave Denton, said the first-quarter results were “consistent with our expectations, supported by improved gross margin and disciplined cost management.” The company’s characterization of the quarter and the analyst’s forecast are different claims: one describes reported performance, the other anticipates the rest of the year.

Nike forecast fiscal 2027 adjusted diluted EPS of $1.15 to $1.35, excluding approximately $0.15 per share of Pace-related restructuring expenses for the year. That adjusted range is not directly comparable to the quarter’s $0.48 GAAP diluted EPS: one is a full-year adjusted forecast with a stated exclusion, while the other is a quarterly reported result.

The revenue and EPS figures are forward-looking company expectations, not guarantees. Nike says they are subject to risks and uncertainties.
What Pace could mean—and what it does not prove
Nike describes Pace as an operating-model transformation. The company estimates it could generate approximately $2.5 billion in cumulative savings through fiscal 2031, while incurring approximately $1.0 billion in pre-tax charges through that period. Those charges are in addition to approximately $0.3 billion of severance costs recognized in fiscal 2026.

The savings are multiyear estimates, not a near-term earnings recovery already delivered. Nike says actual savings, charges, and cash expenditures could differ materially from the estimates. Pace therefore adds both potential longer-term cost relief and execution uncertainty; it does not by itself overturn the weak fiscal-year revenue outlook.
What to watch in the next results
- Revenue direction: whether sales trends begin to improve against Nike’s forecast for a high-single-digit fiscal 2027 decline.
- Direct and digital sales: whether the declines in NIKE Direct and NIKE Brand Digital moderate.
- Margin and profit: whether the recent gross-margin improvement can be sustained while revenue is falling.
- Pace execution: whether the company’s cost and operating changes progress alongside the charges and uncertainty it has disclosed.
The key distinction is between a reasonable warning and a known outcome: Nike’s reported quarter was mixed, and management’s full-year forecast is weak, but the claim that this was the year’s peak remains Morgan Stanley’s attributed view.
