The Nike Vaporfly 4 is a lightweight, carbon-plated road racer designed for 5K through marathon distances. Reviewers describe it as firmer and snappier than earlier Vaporfly versions, with its best feel at faster paces. Its close, low-volume fit and narrow heel are meaningful trade-offs: it is most worth considering if the shoe holds your foot securely and your stride suits a less stable platform.
What changed in the Vaporfly 4?
Nike announced the Vaporfly 4 on February 25, 2025, with ZoomX foam, a carbon fiber Flyplate, updated plate curvature, and a lightweight upper. Nike says it is roughly 10% lighter than the Vaporfly 3 and 20 grams lighter than the original Vaporfly from 2017. Those are Nike’s comparisons; the announcement does not specify an independent measurement protocol. Read Nike’s announcement.

Nike positions the shoe for 5K through marathon racing. That is the intended range, not a guarantee that every runner will find it equally comfortable or effective at every distance.

Doctors of Running describes a snug, low-volume upper, particularly around the toes, and reports mild heel slippage. Check both toe room and heel hold rather than assuming a racing fit will work for your foot. If trying it in person, make sure your toes have enough room and your heel stays secure when you run.
#1 Best Overall
- The full-length carbon fiber Flyplate has a higher angle than the Vaporfly 3 and combines with a lower heel-to-toe drop to give you a propulsive feel on race day.
- Running from heel to toe, it unlocks even more energy return than before with a slight midsole reduction, giving you a bouncy, feathery feel.
- Engineered mesh helps reduce the weight of the shoe while providing a more consistent fit.
- Midsole bulges at the heel to help reduce weight on the inside of the foot to give you a more stable ride
The reviewer suggests that runners who want more room could try a half size up. Treat that as one reviewer’s suggestion, not a universal sizing rule: foot shape, sock choice, and preferred race fit vary.
What does it feel like to run in?
Doctors of Running characterizes the ride as firmer and snappier than earlier Vaporfly versions. In that review, the shoe responds better as pace increases and feels less distinctive when run slowly. That makes it a more compelling option for fast workouts and racing than for runners looking for an especially forgiving everyday shoe.
Rank #2
- Engineered mesh up top helps reduce the weight of the shoe while providing a more consistent fit.
- Nike ZoomX, our most responsive foam, just got lighter. Running from heel to toe, it unlocks even more energy return than before with a slight midsole reduction, giving you a bouncy feel.
- We reduced the weight of the outsole by using a thinner rubber compared to the Vaporfly 3.
- The full-length carbon fiber Flyplate sits at a higher angle compared to the plate in the Vaporfly 3.
Reviewer preferences also lean toward faster efforts and shorter road races, particularly distances through the half marathon. Nike’s stated 5K-to-marathon range is broader; your comfort over a full marathon depends on your pace, fit, and response to the firmer ride.
Is it stable, and where does it work best?
RunRepeat flags the narrow heel and limited stability, especially for heel strikers. Its reviewers note that the lower stack height could make the shoe feel somewhat more stable than earlier versions for some runners, but that does not remove the narrow-platform trade-off. If you want a broad, confidence-inspiring base or tend to land heavily on your heel, try it before race day and compare how it feels with a wider-platform option.

- Nike Vaporfly 4 Men's Road Racing Shoes
- Men to Women Sizing
- 6 Men = 7.5 Women
Doctors of Running reports that traction is weak away from pavement and track, including on trail, dirt, and cross-country surfaces. This is a road-and-track racer, not a good choice for mixed-terrain routes.
How much does it weigh, and what are the measurements?
Published weights differ because the sources report different sizes and measurement contexts. Nike’s model-to-model figures are manufacturer claims; the independent figures below should not be treated as a like-for-like comparison.

| RunRepeat, 2025 lab review | 166 g lab-reported weight; the cited figure is not specified here for a particular size. |

| Believe in the Run, 2025 review | 36 mm heel, 30 mm forefoot, and 6 mm drop. |
The weight numbers are not directly comparable without matching size and method. A figure from one size or lab protocol should not be assumed to describe every pair.

RunRepeat rated the toebox durability highly in its lab work, while Doctors of Running lists possible early outsole wear as a concern. These observations concern different parts of the shoe, so they are not necessarily in conflict. They also do not establish how long an individual pair will last; mileage, surface, and running mechanics matter.

Who should consider the Vaporfly 4?
- Consider trying it if you want a fast-feeling road racer, run at quicker paces, and find its close fit secure without crowding your toes.
- Be cautious if you need more forefoot room, experience heel slip, prefer a softer ride at easy paces, or want more stability—particularly if you are a heel striker.
- Keep it on road or track rather than choosing it for trail, dirt, or cross-country running.
When comparing it with another racer, focus on fit and heel hold, how the ride feels at your actual race pace, platform stability, intended surface, and the distance you plan to race. A faster-feeling shoe is not automatically the better choice if its shape or ride does not suit you.
