Your Nike Adapt shoes should still work. Nike removed the Adapt App from the Apple App Store and Google Play worldwide on 6 August 2024, but says the shoes continue to operate through controls built into each shoe. You can still adjust fit, check battery status and power the shoes on or off without the phone app.
What changed on 6 August 2024?
Nike says it retired the Adapt App globally after what it called a “long and successful run” for its Adapt footwear and auto-lacing technology. The app was released alongside the Adapt BB self-lacing basketball shoe in 2019. Nike’s official support notice states: “After five years, we’re retiring the Adapt App and removing it from the Apple and Android app stores, globally, on 6 August 2024.”

The change concerns the mobile app and its distribution. It is not an announcement that the shoe motors or lacing system have been disabled.
Nike’s retirement notice is the primary source for the date, global scope and remaining shoe controls.

Can you still tighten or loosen Adapt shoes without the app?
Yes. Nike says “your Adapt shoes will continue to work without the app.” The buttons on the shoes provide the essential controls owners need for everyday operation.
| Task | After the app retirement | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Adjust the fit | Use the buttons on the shoe | Nike’s support guidance says on-shoe controls remain available. |
| Check battery status | Use the shoe controls | Nike identifies battery checking as a remaining shoe function. |
| Power the shoe on or off | Use the shoe buttons | Included in Nike’s stated manual controls. |
| Save fit settings | Supported through the shoe’s controls, according to Nike’s indexed FAQ | The notice does not provide a current phone-app workflow. |
| Unlace | Use the shoe controls | Nike’s indexed FAQ describes unlacing. |
| Phone-based fit control | No longer available through a new app download | The Adapt App was removed from Apple and Android stores globally. |
| LED or lighting customization | App-dependent behavior may no longer be available | Independent reporting identifies lighting controls as an app feature; Nike’s notice does not promise that every app feature remains. |
Which features are affected?
Core lacing and fit operation
The essential function—tightening or loosening the shoes—remains available from the shoes themselves. Nike’s statement means the app retirement alone does not make an Adapt pair unusable.
Rank #2
- Power laces lock you in at the press of a button—built into the shoe or controlled via smartphone
- The upper is made with moldable TPU yarns, making it incredibly light and supportive; The molded heel piece helps lock in your ankle
- A large Nike Zoom Air Turbo cushioning unit sits under the ball of your foot; It's articulated to engage at different angles, staying responsive as you run and cut
Phone and lighting features
The app provided a phone interface for fit controls and included LED-related customization, according to Engadget’s report. Nike’s official notice confirms the remaining basic controls but does not document the status of every previously configured app feature. Owners should therefore distinguish between the shoe’s manual operation and optional phone-based settings.
What owners should—and should not—assume
- Do assume: the shoe buttons remain the supported way to adjust fit, check battery status and control power.
- Do not assume: an old installation will continue to work indefinitely on a particular phone or operating-system version.
- Do not assume: an app backup or restored phone will reinstall a working copy. Nike’s notice only establishes removal from the major stores; it does not verify backup-restoration behavior.
- Do not assume: battery life, repair availability or future service support from the app-retirement notice. Those issues are not addressed there.
Do you need to replace your Nike Adapt shoes?
No—not because the app was retired. Nike explicitly says Adapt shoes continue to work without it, so buying another pair is not a required response to the shutdown.

The Adapt BB is discontinued, and current marketplace or resale stock, seller authenticity and product condition are time-sensitive and not established here. If you are identifying an existing pair, Nike’s official support page is more useful than treating a replacement purchase as a fix.

Nike’s support notice is the best source for the post-retirement control guidance. A Nike Adapt BB quick-start guide hosted in an FCC filing record provides product-operation context, but the available record does not establish its publication date or the firmware and software versions it covers. It should not be treated as proof that phone pairing works with current devices.

The practical takeaway for owners
- Keep using the buttons on each shoe for fit, battery and power functions.
- Expect the official Adapt App to remain unavailable for new downloads after 6 August 2024.
- Treat phone-only and lighting features as uncertain rather than guaranteed, especially after changing phones or operating systems.
- Do not replace a functioning pair solely because Nike ended the app.
