Choose the Nike Pegasus Plus 2 if you want a shoe Nike positions for tempo runs and quicker workouts; consider the Pegasus 42 if you want a road-running daily trainer for a wider range of paces. Their cushioning systems and fit descriptions differ, and available testing does not establish a universal winner.
How the Pegasus Plus 2 and Pegasus 42 are meant to be used
Nike positions the Pegasus Plus 2 as a tempo trainer aimed at runners seeking speed. The company’s August 20, 2026 announcement describes it as a fast trainer built around a visible Air Zoom unit and responsive ZoomX foam. That is Nike’s intended-use description, not independent proof of how every runner will experience it.

Nike describes the Pegasus 42 as a responsive road-running shoe with cushioning for different paces. In practical terms, start with your usual training: choose the Plus 2 if quicker sessions are the priority; consider the 42 if you want one shoe for varied everyday road runs.
What differs in the cushioning
The shoes use different combinations of foam and Air Zoom cushioning. RTINGS lists ZoomX foam with a visible curved forefoot Air Zoom unit for the Plus 2, versus ReactX foam and a full-length Air Zoom unit for the Pegasus 42. Those are design distinctions, not a guarantee that one ride will feel better to you.

In its direct comparison, updated September 23, 2026, RTINGS reports higher results for the Plus 2 on several measured energy-return and cushioning metrics. These are lab measurements; they do not establish that the Plus 2 will make you faster, feel more comfortable, or perform better on a particular run.
Fit, weight, and drop
Fit notes are model-specific, so do not assume the two shoes will fit alike. Nike describes the Plus 2 as having an accommodating forefoot and toe box, with a secure midfoot, and identifies its last as MR10 2.0. For the Pegasus 42, Nike says the forefoot is roomier than in earlier iterations and that most runners find it true to size. If fit is a deciding factor, try both when possible rather than extending one model’s sizing guidance to the other.
Nike’s UK Pegasus 42 product page lists an approximate weight of 300 g for a men’s UK 9 and a 10 mm heel-to-toe drop. The available specifications do not provide a like-for-like Plus 2 weight figure, so those numbers cannot establish which shoe is lighter.

Rank #2
- We placed mesh with tighter woven fabric in high-wear areas, like the toes. Mesh combines with open holes on the upper for breathability. Plus, Flywire technology integrates with the laces to help secure your midfoot.
What the available testing can—and cannot—tell you
RTINGS provides measurements of both models, but the available field review is not a head-to-head. Tom’s Guide reports that its reviewer ran 35 miles in the Pegasus 42 in its May 23, 2026 review. That is one reviewer’s stated mileage in the 42, not a comparison test of both shoes. The available evidence therefore supports comparing their stated roles, construction, and measured lab results—not claiming a firsthand verdict across both models.
Which one should you buy?
- Choose the Pegasus Plus 2 as your starting point if you are specifically looking for a tempo-oriented trainer for quicker workouts and prefer its ZoomX foam and visible curved forefoot Air Zoom design.
- Consider the Pegasus 42 if your priority is a versatile road-running daily trainer for runs at different paces, or if its fit feels better when you try it on.
- Try both if you are undecided about fit or ride. The models’ stated purposes and cushioning differ, but lab results cannot predict your personal preference.
