The Pegasus 42 changes the midsole more substantially than the upper: it replaces the Pegasus 41’s separate heel and forefoot Air Zoom pods with one curved, full-length Air Zoom unit, while retaining ReactX foam. Nike also says the 42 has more forefoot cushioning and roomier shaping. Whether that makes it the better buy depends on how it feels on your foot and the price gap: choose the 42 if you prefer its ride and fit and the prices are close; consider the 41 if it fits well and costs substantially less.
What changed from Pegasus 41 to Pegasus 42?
| Area | Pegasus 41 | Pegasus 42 |
|---|---|---|
| Air Zoom unit | Separate heel and forefoot Air Zoom pods. | Curved, full-length Air Zoom unit surrounded by ReactX foam. |
| Forefoot cushioning and shape | Previous forefoot design. | Nike says it adds 3 mm of forefoot cushioning without increasing overall sole thickness, with more toe spring and an updated last. |
| Upper and fit | Previous mesh upper and last. | Nike describes a softer, more breathable mesh and more room in the toe box and forefoot. |
| Outsole | Previous waffle-pattern design. | Updated waffle outsole with high-abrasion rubber and flex grooves; a reviewer observed less rubber coverage. |
Nike presents the full-length unit as a way to create a smoother, more propulsive ride. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer reported a smoother transition and more pop at toe-off in a comparison run. RTINGS, however, found the practical cushioning advantage less pronounced while running. Those are reviewer assessments, not a guarantee of how the shoes will feel to every runner.

Nike Japan’s February 25, 2026 announcement says the Pegasus 42 has 15% higher energy return than the 41, based on Nike’s own testing. RTINGS did not find a significant energy-return difference in its comparison. Treat the 15% figure as a manufacturer claim, not an independently confirmed improvement.
How different are the fit and upper?
Nike says the 42’s revised last gives the toe box and forefoot more room, alongside a softer, more breathable mesh upper. That describes the design change, not a universal fit improvement: a roomier forefoot may suit some feet and feel less secure to others. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer did not notice a large upper difference. If possible, try both models, especially if the 41 already fits you well or you are sensitive to toe-box shape.

What do the weight and drop figures tell you?
The published numbers are not directly interchangeable because they come from different shoe sizes and measurement methods:
- Nike’s European product listing gives the 42 an approximate weight of 300 g in men’s UK size 9 and a 10 mm drop.
- RTINGS measured its comparison samples at 282.6 g for the 42 and 283.2 g for the 41, with measured drops of 10.7 mm and 11.4 mm, respectively.
- Tom’s Guide reported 10.8 oz for the 42 and 10.3 oz for the 41 in its own men’s US size 10 comparison.
These figures do not establish that one model is universally lighter: the sizes and methods differ. The small measured weight gap in RTINGS’ samples also does not settle how the shoes will feel during a run.
Does the updated outsole affect the choice?
The 42 uses an updated waffle outsole with high-abrasion rubber and flex grooves, according to Nike; RTINGS also notes a changed outsole pattern. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer observed less rubber coverage on the 42 than on the 41 and raised a possible durability tradeoff. That is an observation, not a long-term wear test, so it does not establish that the 42 will wear out sooner.

If your Pegasus 41 is comfortable and doing its job, the evidence does not establish that replacing it will deliver a meaningful performance gain for every runner. The 42’s main case is its different Air Zoom layout and the fit and ride you may prefer—not a proven universal upgrade.

- We placed mesh with tighter woven fabric in high-wear areas, like the toes. Mesh combines with open holes on the upper for breathability. Plus, Flywire technology integrates with the laces to help secure your midfoot.
Choose the Nike Pegasus 42 if you want to try the full-length Air Zoom design, prefer its roomier forefoot, or find that it feels better in a run or fitting. If the 41 still suits you, there is no evidence-based need to upgrade simply because the next model is available.

Compare the live price for your size and color in your market rather than relying on old sale reports. Tom’s Guide reported a US $79 sale example for the 41 using a promotion in May 2026, said it was often below $100 then, and reported a $145 price for the 42 at that time. Those are historical US examples, not current offers. Nike’s European listing showed the 42 at €139.99 when accessed October 7, 2026; that market-specific listed price can change.
- Buy the 42 when its price is close to the 41’s and you prefer its fit or ride.
- Consider the 41 when it fits comfortably and is substantially cheaper.
- Try both when fit is uncertain; official claims about extra forefoot room cannot predict your personal fit.
There is no universal winner: the useful comparison is how each shoe feels to you against the actual price difference where you are buying.
