In the Business Line report’s 12:25 p.m. snapshot, the Nifty 50 was up 0.13% and the Sensex 0.10%—near-flat intraday readings, not closing levels. The report pointed to losses in IT heavyweights and HDFC Bank as drags, while crude and rupee weakness formed part of a cautious market backdrop.
What happened after the opening?
The Nifty 50 and Sensex opened more than 150 points higher, but surrendered most of those early gains by the report’s midday snapshot. At 12:25 p.m., the Nifty stood at 22,451.60, up 29.65 points (0.13%), while the Sensex was at 71,982.16, up 72.46 points (0.10%). These are figures reported during the session on 5 October, not end-of-day values.

The report identified selling in IT heavyweights and HDFC Bank as a counterweight to strength in financial and consumer shares. It cited these declining stocks in its 5 October session snapshot:
#1 Best Overall
| Stock | Reported move | Reported price |
|---|---|---|
| HCL Technologies | Down 3.39% | ₹1,200.90 |
| Infosys | Down 2.26% | ₹1,011.60 |
| HDFC Bank | Down 2.55% | ₹702.80 |
These prices and percentage moves are the report’s session figures, not current quotes. It described PSU banks and broader financials as support, with Nifty Consumer Durables the strongest-performing sectoral index and Nifty Pharma the weakest.
Bank Nifty had gained more than 600 points in early trade before giving back nearly all of that advance, according to the report. It also described BSE market breadth as negative: 2,365 declines versus 1,889 advances. Both observations are attributed to the report rather than independently verified exchange data.

What role did crude and the rupee play?
The report noted MCX Crude Oil down 2.71%, WTI crude down 1.40% near $90 a barrel, and the rupee near ₹96.20 per dollar. It presented rupee weakness and elevated energy prices as concerns for India’s import bill and inflation outlook. Those were contemporaneous sources of caution in the report’s market context; the figures alone do not establish that crude or currency moves caused the benchmark indices to retreat.
What technical levels did the report cite?
Sudeep Shah, Vice President, Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, described options positioning and nearby index levels. The report quoted him as saying there was “…meaningful call writing witnessed across 22,500 and 22,600 strikes,” and noted substantial put-side open interest at 22,400 and 22,300.
| Index | Support cited by Shah | Resistance cited by Shah |
|---|---|---|
| Nifty | 22,320–22,340 | 22,630–22,650 |
| Sensex | 71,600 | 72,500 |
These were Shah’s dated observations in the 5 October report, not current levels or a prediction of where either index would trade next.

The report said investors would watch the RBI Monetary Policy Committee decision scheduled for 7 October and described a 25-basis-point rate hike as widely expected at that time. That was a pre-decision market expectation, not a report of the eventual policy outcome.
