Nifty 50 is generally the more natural large-company core benchmark, while Nifty Next 50 gives exposure to the next cohort of companies in the Nifty 100. The choice depends on the role you need in your portfolio, your tolerance for drawdowns, your investment horizon, and overlap with holdings you already own.
On the NSE Indices dashboard dated April 30, 2026, Nifty Next 50 had higher trailing total returns over one, three and five years, but it also showed higher one-year volatility and beta. Those are historical benchmark observations, not forecasts. A sound comparison therefore puts return, risk, construction and implementation side by side instead of choosing the index with the best recent number.

Nifty 50 is a free-float market-capitalisation-weighted index of 50 stocks listed on the National Stock Exchange. The weighting method gives greater influence to companies with larger publicly available market value rather than simply assigning every constituent the same weight. NSE Indices reported that Nifty 50 represented about 53.73% of the free-float market capitalisation of NSE-listed stocks on March 30, 2026.

It is commonly used as a broad large-company benchmark and as the reference index for index funds and exchange-traded funds designed to track India’s biggest listed businesses. Calling it a “core” exposure describes a possible portfolio role; it is not a guarantee of lower losses or superior returns.
Nifty Next 50
Nifty Next 50 is formed from the 50 companies in the Nifty 100 after the Nifty 50 constituents are removed. NSE Indices describes it in its Index Concepts FAQ as “an index built out of the next 50 large, liquid stocks in India.” Its companies are therefore below the Nifty 50 group in the Nifty 100 selection structure, not a random collection of mid-cap shares.
The index represented about 11.22% of NSE-listed free-float market capitalisation on March 30, 2026. Its factsheet states that it is rebalanced semi-annually and can serve as a benchmark for index funds and ETFs. The official index page also lists domestic index-fund and ETF issuers, but a listing does not establish that every issuer has a currently available product.

A company is not simultaneously counted in both indexes under their maintenance rules. Owning products tracking both indexes can still create broad exposure to large Indian companies, but the same stock should not be assumed to appear in both index portfolios at the same time. Constituent changes at review dates can alter the holdings and the degree of overlap between an index product and your other investments.
How the construction changes the exposure
Nifty 50 concentrates on the largest companies selected into the Nifty 100. Nifty Next 50 covers the following cohort. That distinction matters because company size, sector weights, liquidity, earnings maturity and market sensitivity can differ even though both indexes are made up of large, liquid NSE-listed stocks.
Free-float market-capitalisation weighting means neither index is a fixed list of equally sized positions. A company whose investable market value rises can become more influential, while a declining or newly eligible company can lose weight or leave at a scheduled review. Semi-annual rebalancing in Nifty Next 50 is one reason its composition should be checked rather than inferred from an old fund factsheet.
The Nifty Next 50 factsheet dated April 30, 2026 reported 54 constituents under its periodic capped free-float methodology. That figure can appear inconsistent with the index’s “next 50” name because a methodology snapshot may include constituent counts affected by caps, replacements or implementation details. Use the current official factsheet and product portfolio for the exact holdings on the date you invest; do not treat the label alone as a promise of a permanently unchanged list.

Comparable performance and risk as of April 30, 2026
The fairest historical comparison uses the same observation date and the same total-return variant for both indexes. NSE Indices’ dashboard dated April 30, 2026 reported the following:
| Measure | Nifty 50 | Nifty Next 50 |
|---|---|---|
| 1-year total return | -0.28% | 9.06% |
| 3-year annualised total return | 11.21% | 21.76% |
| 5-year annualised total return | 11.69% | 15.88% |
| 1-year volatility | 13.40% | 17.00% |
| 1-year beta to Nifty 50 | 1.00 | 1.10 |
| 1-year correlation with Nifty 50 | 1.00 | 0.87 |
| Price-to-earnings ratio | 20.94 | 19.70 |
| Price-to-book ratio | 3.29 | 3.71 |
| Dividend yield | 1.30% | 1.44% |
Returns longer than one year in this table are annualised; the one-year return is an absolute trailing return. Volatility is the dashboard’s one-year measure. These figures describe index history through April 30, 2026, not the result of a particular mutual fund or ETF.
What the numbers actually say
- Nifty Next 50 led on the displayed one-, three- and five-year total-return periods.
- Its 17.00% one-year volatility was above Nifty 50’s 13.40%.
- A beta of 1.10 indicates that, in this one-year measurement, Next 50 moved more than Nifty 50 relative to the benchmark. It is not a permanent risk rating.
- The 0.87 correlation shows substantial but incomplete co-movement. Holding both indexes does not eliminate equity-market risk or guarantee meaningful diversification.
- The valuation multiples and dividend yields are date-specific snapshots. A lower P/E, higher P/B or a slightly different dividend yield does not by itself make one index better value.
The result supports a risk-and-role decision, not a claim that Next 50 is always riskier or will always outperform. The relationship changes with the start and end dates. A 2024 NSE Indices white paper, for example, reported a different seven-year comparison from its five-year comparison as of October 31, 2024. Past performance changes and cannot predict the next period.
Why total-return figures are the right comparison
A price index tracks changes in share prices. A Total Return Index (TRI) adds dividends and assumes they are reinvested. Because investors in the underlying shares can receive dividends, TRI is the more complete benchmark for evaluating investment results.
NSE Indices’ official guidance states: “An investor in index stocks should benchmark his investments against the Total Returns index instead of the price index to determine the actual returns vis-à-vis the index.” Use the same TRI basis for both indexes, and check whether a fund’s published performance is also compared with the TRI rather than only the price index.
Even a TRI comparison is not the return you will necessarily receive. A fund or ETF incurs expenses and may have tracking difference, cash drag, trading costs, taxes and timing effects. An ETF’s market price can also differ temporarily from its net asset value. Your deposits, withdrawals and rebalancing dates further change the personal outcome.
Which index fits a large-company core role?
Nifty 50 is the more natural starting point when your objective is broad exposure to the largest companies represented in the Nifty 100. Its 50-stock construction and larger share of NSE-listed free-float capitalisation make it a straightforward benchmark for a core allocation discussion.

That description does not mean Nifty 50 is low risk. It remains an equity index, can fall sharply during market stress and is affected by concentration in its largest companies and sectors. Before treating it as a core holding, check whether your existing active funds, retirement account or individual shares already have substantial Nifty 50 exposure.
When Nifty Next 50 may serve a different purpose
Nifty Next 50 is designed for investors who specifically want the companies immediately below the Nifty 50 selection. Its recent five-year annualised TRI of 15.88% and one-year volatility of 17.00% illustrate both the potential and the fluctuation that accompanied the cited period.
This exposure can be considered when you can tolerate larger interim declines, have a sufficiently long period for an equity allocation, and understand that the index is not a substitute for cash or a capital-guaranteed product. The index may also overlap economically with other large- and mid-cap holdings even though its formal constituent set is disjoint from Nifty 50.
Do not buy it solely because the latest return table places it first. A high trailing return can reflect the particular market cycle and starting valuation. Decide what role the allocation is meant to play before looking at the recent winner.
A practical decision framework
Step 1: Define the job of the allocation
- For a single broad large-company benchmark, begin by examining Nifty 50.
- For deliberate exposure to the next Nifty 100 cohort, examine Nifty Next 50.
- For a two-index allocation, specify why both are needed and what risk you expect the second holding to add.
Step 2: Check your ability to withstand losses
Ask how you would respond if the chosen index lost value for several months or years. The April 2026 comparison showed Next 50 volatility of 17.00% versus 13.40% for Nifty 50, but a single year cannot establish a permanent difference. Your answer should account for emergency savings, income stability, debt obligations and the date you may need the money.

List the funds, ETFs and individual stocks you already own. Compare their current holdings, sector weights and market-cap exposure with the index product you are considering. A product can add less diversification than its name suggests if your portfolio already tracks the same large-company universe.
Step 4: Compare the actual implementation
Indexes are benchmarks, not investable securities. For each available fund or ETF, review the current scheme document, expense ratio, tracking difference, tracking error where disclosed, portfolio replication method, assets, dealing frequency and tax treatment. For an ETF, also check trading volume, bid-ask spread, creation and redemption arrangements, and whether the exchange price has traded materially away from net asset value.

Step 5: Set a review rule
Decide in advance when you will reassess the allocation—for example, after a planned financial-goal change or a scheduled portfolio review—not whenever a headline return changes. Check that the product still tracks the intended index, that costs remain acceptable and that your risk capacity has not changed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Index fund or ETF: what to verify
NSE Indices lists domestic index funds and ETF issuers on the relevant index pages. Treat those lists as a starting point for locating products, not as a statement that every listed product is currently open, liquid or suitable.
| Item to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Expense ratio | Recurring charges reduce the return you keep relative to the index. |
| Tracking difference | Shows how the product’s realised return has diverged from its benchmark after costs and implementation effects. |
| Tracking error | Helps indicate how consistently the product follows the benchmark, where the provider reports it. |
| Portfolio and replication | Confirms whether the product holds the securities directly, uses a representative sample or follows another permitted method. |
| Liquidity and bid-ask spread | Especially important for ETFs because the price you pay or receive can differ from net asset value. |
| Tax and exit rules | Your after-tax result depends on the applicable Indian tax rules, holding period and transaction. |
| Current documents and status | Factsheets, scheme information and exchange information can change; verify them before investing. |
Do not infer product performance from the index table. A fund’s return can differ because of fees, cash balances, rebalancing timing, taxes, securities-lending income, corporate actions and trading costs.
Common mistakes in the comparison
Choosing the latest winner
Comparing only the 9.06% one-year Next 50 return with the -0.28% Nifty 50 return ignores volatility, the measurement date and the possibility that the next period will look different. Include annualised multi-year returns and a risk measure from the same date.
Mixing price and total-return indexes
A price-index number excludes reinvested dividends. Comparing it with a TRI number can make the gap look larger or smaller than the investment experience. Confirm the return variant in every factsheet and performance table.
Assuming “next” means guaranteed future promotion
Nifty Next 50 identifies the companies in the Nifty 100 after Nifty 50 exclusions. It does not promise that every constituent will enter Nifty 50, that such a move will be profitable, or that the index behaves like a startup or a fixed mid-cap segment.
Recommended Free Tools
Treating beta as a forecast
The cited beta of 1.10 is a one-year historical statistic relative to Nifty 50. It is not a promise that the index will move 10% more in every future rise or fall.
Best Value
Ignoring rebalancing and product differences
Constituents and weights change. A product may also lag its index. Read the current documents instead of relying on an old article, a remembered stock list or a headline valuation.
How to read the valuation and dividend figures
As of April 30, 2026, Nifty Next 50 had a P/E of 19.70 versus 20.94 for Nifty 50, a P/B of 3.71 versus 3.29, and a dividend yield of 1.44% versus 1.30%. These are aggregate snapshots whose meaning depends on the earnings, book values, sector mix and accounting conditions of the constituents.
A lower P/E is not automatically a bargain: earnings can be cyclical, temporarily elevated or expected to decline. A higher P/B can reflect different business economics, while dividend yield can change because of both prices and dividend declarations. Use these measures as context alongside portfolio construction, not as a stand-alone buy signal.

Answering the “is Nifty Next 50 riskier?” question
The most precise answer is: it was more volatile in the cited one-year dashboard period, but the available figure does not prove that it will always be riskier. The dashboard recorded 17.00% one-year volatility and 1.10 beta for Nifty Next 50, compared with 13.40% and 1.00 for Nifty 50. Both are equity benchmarks that can lose value.
Risk also includes concentration, liquidity, valuation, drawdown duration, tracking quality and the investor’s need for cash. A person with a diversified portfolio and a long horizon may experience the same index differently from someone who needs the money soon. Match the product to the role and the consequences of a decline, not to a label alone.
A concise choice guide
| If your priority is… | Start by examining… | Question to answer first |
|---|---|---|
| A broad large-company core allocation | Nifty 50 | Do my existing holdings already replicate this exposure? |
| Specific exposure to the cohort below Nifty 50 | Nifty Next 50 | Can I tolerate the higher fluctuations shown in the cited period? |
| Higher recent trailing returns | Neither index on returns alone | Are the return period, TRI basis and risk figures comparable? |
| Choosing between available funds or ETFs | The product documents for either index | What are the current costs, tracking difference, liquidity and tax implications? |
Bottom line for different investors
For someone seeking a straightforward large-company benchmark, Nifty 50 is the logical first comparison. For someone intentionally adding the next Nifty 100 cohort and able to accept potentially larger fluctuations, Nifty Next 50 may be the more relevant exposure. The April 30, 2026 data show why neither conclusion should be based on returns alone: Next 50 led the displayed trailing periods but also had higher measured volatility and beta.
Make the final decision at the product and portfolio level. Verify the current index factsheet, compare the fund or ETF’s costs and tracking record, account for taxes and liquidity, and check how the holding changes your overall exposure. Historical index performance is useful context, not a personal recommendation or a forecast.
