Nifty 50 vs Nifty Next 50 vs Nifty 100: Which Index Suits Your Portfolio?

For most investors, Nifty 50 is the straightforward large-cap core, Nifty 100 is the one-index choice for broader large-cap coverage, and Nifty Next 50 is best treated as a higher-volatility satellite allocation. The right choice depends on whether you prioritise established companies and liquidity, want both large-cap segments in one holding, or deliberately want the next tier of companies with greater maturity and liquidity risk.

All three benchmarks are free-float market-capitalisation weighted, so larger companies receive larger weights. They are not equal-weight portfolios. Their constituents and weights change at index reviews, so check the latest NSE Indices factsheet and the fund documents before investing.

At a glance: what each index does

Index What it contains How it is positioned NSE free-float market-cap share on March 30, 2026
Nifty 50 50 diversified companies from important sectors Established, front-line blue-chip core 53.73%
Nifty Next 50 The 50 Nifty 100 companies left after excluding Nifty 50 constituents Next tier of large companies; growth-oriented and less liquid 11.22%
Nifty 100 The combined Nifty 50 and Nifty Next 50 portfolio Broad large-cap exposure in one benchmark 64.95%

The market-capitalisation figures are published by NSE Indices for March 30, 2026. They describe each index’s share of NSE free-float market capitalisation, not a forecast of returns.

How the three indexes are related

Nifty 50 is the first 50

Nifty 50 is a diversified 50-stock index designed to represent important sectors of the Indian equity market. NSE describes it as a front-line blue-chip benchmark. Its base period is November 3, 1995, and its base value is 1000.

Because it contains the largest and most established companies represented in the benchmark family, it is usually the simplest starting point for a large-cap allocation. It is also the most liquid of the three choices according to the NSE Indices FAQ, which can make buying and selling units more practical for investors using exchange-traded funds.

Nifty Next 50 is the remainder

Nifty Next 50 contains the 50 companies in Nifty 100 after Nifty 50 constituents are removed. It is therefore not an additional list of 50 companies sitting alongside an unchanged Nifty 50 holding; it is the next segment of the same 100-company universe.

Its base date is November 3, 1996, and its base value is 1000. NSE describes it as the “second rung of growth stocks” and says it can be viewed as an incubator where young growth stocks are found. The same FAQ notes that it is less liquid than Nifty 50. That combination can produce a more aggressive experience, especially when investors need to trade quickly or when market conditions are stressed.

Nifty 100 combines both

Nifty 100 selects the top 100 companies by full market capitalisation from Nifty 500 and tracks the combined Nifty 50 plus Nifty Next 50 portfolio. In practical terms, it is the broadest of these three large-cap benchmarks while still concentrating on the largest companies in the market.

Nifty 100 does not create a third, independent group of 100 companies in addition to the two 50-stock indexes. It brings the two segments together. Owning both a Nifty 50 fund and a Nifty 100 fund will therefore create substantial overlap rather than two completely separate exposures.

What free-float weighting means for your exposure

Each index uses free-float market-capitalisation weighting. A company’s weight reflects the market value of shares available for public trading, rather than giving every constituent an identical allocation.

  • The largest eligible companies receive the largest weights.
  • A 50-stock index does not mean 2% in every stock.
  • Nifty 100 is broader by constituent count, but its largest companies can still account for a substantial portion of the portfolio.
  • Weights move as prices and free-float shares change, and they are reset through index reviews.

This structure is why the indexes are useful as market-capitalisation benchmarks but should not be described as evenly diversified portfolios. A fund tracking one of them will inherit the index’s concentration in its biggest constituents and sectors.

Nifty 50 represented 29.24% of NSE traded value for the six months ending March 2026. Nifty 100 represented 40.93% over the same period. These are index-level market statistics for the stated period, not a guarantee that every fund tracking the index will trade at those levels.

NSE’s FAQ identifies Nifty Next 50 as less liquid than Nifty 50. No comparable traded-value percentage for Nifty Next 50 is established here, so its liquidity should be assessed through the actual fund’s trading volume, bid-ask spread and execution history.

Choosing Nifty 50 as a core holding

When it fits

Nifty 50 fits an investor who wants a clear, established large-cap anchor and does not need to make a separate decision about the next tier of companies. Its 50 constituents cover important sectors, and its front-line status and higher liquidity make it easier to use for regular contributions, rebalancing and withdrawals.

  • You want one familiar benchmark for the large-cap portion of a portfolio.
  • You value trading liquidity when buying or selling an ETF.
  • You prefer established companies over a deliberate tilt toward newer entrants to the large-cap segment.
  • You want a simple benchmark against which to compare a large-cap index fund.

What it does not provide

Nifty 50 does not include the Nifty Next 50 companies. A portfolio holding only Nifty 50 will therefore omit that second group, even though some of those companies may later move into the Nifty 50 after index reviews.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is also not a complete Indian equity portfolio. Its 53.73% share of NSE free-float market capitalisation on March 30, 2026 shows its scale, but the index remains a large-cap slice of the market rather than coverage of every listed company.

Choosing Nifty Next 50 as a satellite allocation

When it fits

Nifty Next 50 is appropriate only when the investor intentionally wants exposure to the 50 Nifty 100 companies outside Nifty 50 and accepts the associated trade-offs. NSE’s description of a “second rung of growth stocks” explains why investors may use it to complement, rather than automatically replace, a blue-chip core.

  • You already have a core allocation and want a measured growth-oriented sleeve.
  • You can tolerate larger changes in relative performance and portfolio weights.
  • You understand that lower liquidity can affect execution, particularly in an ETF.
  • You are prepared to review the allocation rather than assuming it will behave like Nifty 50.

Why it can feel different

The index represents 11.22% of NSE free-float market capitalisation as of March 30, 2026, far less than Nifty 50’s 53.73%. Its constituents are the next group within the Nifty 100 structure, so their business maturity, market profile and trading liquidity can differ from the front-line companies.

“Growth” does not mean a guaranteed higher return. It describes the role and composition NSE assigns to the segment. Prices can fall, and a less-liquid market can make an ETF’s spread or execution more challenging when conditions are volatile.

Choosing Nifty 100 as a one-index large-cap allocation

When it fits

Nifty 100 is the cleanest option for an investor who wants both Nifty 50 and Nifty Next 50 in one benchmark. It represented 64.95% of NSE free-float market capitalisation on March 30, 2026 and 40.93% of NSE traded value for the six months ending March 2026.

  • You want broader large-cap coverage without managing two index funds.
  • You want the established Nifty 50 segment and the next 50 companies together.
  • You prefer one allocation to rebalance instead of separate core and satellite targets.
  • You accept that the index is still weighted toward its largest companies and is not equal-weighted.

The overlap to check

Nifty 100 already contains every Nifty 50 constituent. If you add a Nifty 50 fund to a Nifty 100 fund, you increase the effective exposure to the Nifty 50 companies rather than simply adding 50 new holdings. Likewise, combining Nifty 50 and Nifty Next 50 funds may reproduce the broad Nifty 100 universe, but the final weights depend on how much money you put in each fund.

Decision framework: match the index to the job

Your portfolio need Most natural starting point Reason
A straightforward, liquid large-cap anchor Nifty 50 Established front-line companies and higher liquidity than Nifty Next 50
One broad allocation covering both large-cap segments Nifty 100 Combines Nifty 50 and Nifty Next 50 in one benchmark
A deliberate growth-tilted satellite sleeve Nifty Next 50 Targets the next 50 Nifty 100 companies and accepts greater maturity and liquidity risk
Two separate sleeves with chosen weights Nifty 50 plus Nifty Next 50 funds Allows you to set your own split, but creates two products and requires rebalancing

These are general educational roles inferred from the index composition and NSE’s liquidity descriptions, not personalised investment advice. Your time horizon, risk capacity, existing holdings and need for cash can change the appropriate choice.

How to compare funds tracking the same index

The index name is only the first decision. Two products tracking the same benchmark can deliver different investor outcomes because of fund structure, costs and trading conditions.

Expense ratio

Check the fund’s current expense ratio in its official documents. A lower published fee can help, but it is not the only measure of quality. Compare the fee with the fund’s tracking difference and the way it handles cash, corporate actions and portfolio changes.

Tracking difference

Tracking difference is the gap between the fund’s return and the index return over a stated period. Review multiple periods rather than relying on a single month. A fund with a low expense ratio can still lag more than expected if implementation costs, cash balances or rebalancing create friction.

Bid-ask spread and trading volume

For an ETF, inspect the displayed bid and offer and the amount of trading taking place. A narrow spread generally reduces the immediate cost of entering or exiting, while a wider spread can matter more than a small difference in annual fees. This check is especially important for Nifty Next 50 because NSE describes it as less liquid than Nifty 50.

Index-fund mechanics

An index fund that is bought or sold at its applicable net asset value avoids exchange bid-ask execution, but it may have cut-off times, settlement rules and tracking differences that differ from an ETF. Read the scheme information and the latest factsheet before selecting the vehicle.

Tax and transaction costs

Tax treatment, brokerage, securities transaction charges and other levies depend on the product, transaction type, holding period and applicable Indian rules. Calculate these costs for the actual fund and your own transaction pattern rather than assuming that two funds with the same index have identical after-tax results.

A practical selection process

  1. Define the role. Decide whether you need a core large-cap holding, one broad large-cap allocation, or a higher-growth satellite sleeve.
  2. Check existing overlap. List current funds and their benchmarks. A Nifty 100 holding already includes Nifty 50, so adding both can increase exposure to the same largest companies.
  3. Choose the index before the product. Set the desired benchmark first; then compare ETFs or index funds that track it.
  4. Read the latest factsheet. Confirm constituents, weights, rebalance information, assets, expense ratio and recent tracking difference. Index membership and weights change at reviews.
  5. Check execution. For an ETF, compare spread and trading activity at the time you expect to transact. For an index fund, check purchase, redemption and cut-off rules.
  6. Set a rebalancing rule. If you use separate Nifty 50 and Nifty Next 50 sleeves, decide in advance when and how you will restore target weights.
  7. Review costs and taxes. Include the product’s charges and the costs of buying, selling and rebalancing under the rules that apply to you.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming 50 stocks means equal diversification

All three indexes are free-float market-cap weighted. The largest companies receive larger weights, so constituent count alone does not tell you how evenly risk is distributed.

Treating Nifty Next 50 as a guaranteed-return upgrade

NSE’s “second rung of growth stocks” description is a composition and positioning statement, not a promise of outperformance. Use it only if you can accept its different risk and liquidity profile.

Buying Nifty 50 and Nifty 100 without checking overlap

Nifty 100 contains Nifty 50. Holding both can be intentional, but it should be a conscious decision to overweight the Nifty 50 segment, not an accidental duplication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring ETF execution costs

A fund’s annual fee is not the whole cost. Spread, trading volume and the difference between the exchange price and the fund’s underlying value can affect the result of a particular transaction.

Using stale constituent information

Index membership and weights change at reviews. A past factsheet cannot establish today’s holdings or weights; use the current NSE Indices and fund documents when making a decision.

What the March 2026 market-share figures do—and do not—tell you

The figures provide useful context for scale: Nifty 50 covered 53.73% of NSE free-float market capitalisation, Nifty Next 50 covered 11.22%, and Nifty 100 covered 64.95% on March 30, 2026. Because Nifty 100 combines the first two segments, its percentage is the sum of their reported market-capitalisation shares.

They do not rank future returns, prove that one index is “better,” or establish a recommended allocation for every investor. No comparable, dated total-return series for all three indexes is established here. Use the figures to understand breadth and market representation, then evaluate the chosen fund’s costs, tracking and execution.

Bottom line by investor profile

For a simple core

Choose a Nifty 50-tracking product when your priority is an established, liquid large-cap anchor.

For one broad large-cap holding

Choose a Nifty 100-tracking product when you want Nifty 50 and Nifty Next 50 together and prefer one allocation to manage.

For a deliberate satellite tilt

Use Nifty Next 50 only when you understand and accept the greater maturity and liquidity risk associated with the next tier of companies.

Whichever route you take, compare the actual fund’s expense ratio, tracking difference, spread, liquidity and tax or transaction costs, and refresh the analysis when the index or fund documents change.
