Nifty 50 vs Nifty 500 Index Funds: What Should Investors Compare?

Compare the index first, then the fund. A Nifty 50 fund tracks a 50-stock benchmark; a Nifty 500 fund tracks a much broader 500-company benchmark. After deciding which breadth suits your goals and risk capacity, compare each scheme’s current costs and tracking quality. Neither index coverage nor past index returns identifies the right fund for every investor.

What differs between the Nifty 50 and Nifty 500?

The index determines the market segment an index fund aims to follow. The Nifty 50 contains 50 stocks and, according to NSE Indices, represented 53.73% of the free-float market capitalisation of NSE-listed stocks on March 30, 2026. NSE Indices describes it as a diversified index representing important sectors of the economy; it has used free-float market-capitalisation weighting since June 26, 2009.

The Nifty 500 represents the top 500 companies by full market capitalisation and average daily turnover from its eligible universe. It represented 92.04% of NSE-listed free-float market capitalisation on March 30, 2026, according to NSE Indices.

Those percentages describe index-level coverage, not the share of your personal portfolio invested in a particular company, and they do not guarantee a particular diversification outcome. The larger constituent count means broader representation, but does not by itself establish lower risk.

What should investors compare?

Constituents, weights and concentration

Check the latest holdings and sector weights, as well as how constituents are selected and rebalanced. A 500-stock index is not 500 equally weighted positions. Market-cap weighting can leave larger companies with substantially more influence than smaller ones. Review the provider’s current methodology and factsheets rather than inferring concentration from the stock count alone.

Scheme expense ratio

An index fund aims to replicate its benchmark, but costs affect what investors receive. Compare the expense ratio in each scheme’s latest official disclosure; do not rely on an old comparison or assume all funds tracking the same index have the same cost. SEBI Investor explains that costs such as expense ratios affect index-fund performance in its overview of index mutual funds.

Tracking error and tracking difference

Tracking error describes variation in the difference between a fund’s returns and its index; tracking difference is the actual return gap over a specified period. SEBI notes that expenses and operational inefficiencies can contribute to divergence from the index. Compare the latest available figures across funds for matching periods and the same index variant. A low expense ratio alone does not prove that a fund tracks its benchmark closely.

Performance over comparable periods

When reviewing historical performance, use total-return index series and identical start and end dates. Keep index performance separate from a scheme’s actual fund returns, which are affected by costs and tracking. Index histories do not predict future returns.

NSE Indices’ 2025 Nifty 50 whitepaper reports an annualised return of 14.04% and annualised volatility of 21.94% for the Nifty 50 Index from June 30, 1999 to June 30, 2025. Its October 2025 Nifty 500 whitepaper reports a 12.39% annualised return and 22.18% annualised volatility for the Nifty 500 TR Index since January 1, 1995. These figures cover different periods and index variants, so they are not a like-for-like comparison: Nifty 50 whitepaper and Nifty 500 whitepaper.

How to choose between the two

Start with the breadth you want your index allocation to represent: the Nifty 50 offers exposure to 50 constituents, while the Nifty 500 covers a wider set of eligible companies. Then consider your goals, time horizon and ability to tolerate equity-market fluctuations. The index definitions and historical figures alone cannot determine personal suitability.

  1. Choose the benchmark scope: decide whether you want the narrower Nifty 50 or broader Nifty 500 representation.
  2. Inspect current index details: review holdings, sector weights and methodology through NSE Indices’ latest factsheets and methodology documents.
  3. Compare actual schemes: check each fund’s latest expense ratio, tracking error and tracking difference, using the same periods and benchmark variant where applicable.
  4. Put past returns in context: compare total-return index series over matching dates, and do not treat historical results as forecasts or as a substitute for scheme-level returns.

SEBI Investor describes index mutual funds as funds that “aim to replicate the performance of a specific stock market index, such as the Nifty 50.” That aim does not mean every scheme delivers precisely the index return; costs and operational factors can create a gap.
