Ni no Kuni: Cross Worlds Mounts—How to Equip, Swap, and Train Them

Open Main Menu > Character > Mount, select an owned mount, and use the equip or summon control. An equipped mount contributes 100% of its stats; every other mount in your collection contributes 30%. To make a mount stronger, use the training or enhancement controls on that same screen, but treat every attempt as a chance rather than a guarantee: training can succeed, super succeed, or fail.

This guide explains the complete mount workflow in Ni no Kuni: Cross Worlds: selecting a mount, changing it during play, training it safely, understanding grades and stat ceilings, and separating real power upgrades from cosmetic changes.

What mounts actually do

Mounts are both transportation and a source of character statistics. Netmarble describes their travel purpose directly: Use a mount to travel to distant places or move faster during quests. The important mechanical distinction is whether a mount is currently equipped.

Mount state Stat contribution What you can do with it
Equipped 100% of that mount’s stats Summon it for travel and receive its full listed contribution
Unequipped but owned 30% of that mount’s stats Keep its passive contribution while another mount is active
Unowned Not available as a usable mount View its acquisition source or requirements, where the client provides them

That 100% versus 30% rule is why changing your active mount can affect performance even when you already own several mounts. Owning a large roster is useful, but the mount selected as active is the one receiving full effect.

Open the Mount menu and equip a mount

  1. Open the Main Menu. Use the menu button in the current game client.
  2. Choose Character. Enter the character-management area rather than an appearance-only menu.
  3. Select Mount. Netmarble’s guide places mount enhancement and management at Main Menu > Character > Mount.
  4. Pick an owned mount. Owned mounts can be selected for equipping or summoning. If a mount is not owned, the screen instead shows its source or requirements when that information is available.
  5. Use the equip or summon control. Confirm the mount you intend to use, then leave the menu and check the mount control in gameplay.

Interface wording can change between client updates, regions, or control schemes. If your button does not literally say “Equip,” look for the current action that makes the selected mount your active or summoned mount. The selected portrait, name, or active-state indicator is more reliable than a remembered button label.

Confirm that the right mount is active

After selecting a mount, return to the field and activate the mount control. The expected model should appear. If a different model appears, reopen Character > Mount and verify that you changed the active selection rather than merely opening that mount’s details. This check also prevents you from spending training resources on one mount while assuming another is selected.

Change or summon a different mount

Changing mounts uses the same Mount screen; you do not need to train a mount before switching to it. Open Main Menu > Character > Mount, select another owned mount, and choose the current equip or summon action. Then use the field control to call the newly selected mount.

Keep two situations separate:

  • Changing the active mount: a gameplay and stat decision. The newly equipped mount receives the 100% contribution, while the rest of your owned mounts remain at 30%.
  • Changing how a mount looks: an appearance decision handled through decorations, dyes, or skins. These options are separate from training.

If a mount is locked, selecting it will not create an equip option. Read the displayed acquisition source or requirement and obtain the mount through the method currently shown in your client. The roster is time-sensitive, so an older guide may describe a source that is no longer presented in exactly the same way.

Power up a mount with training

Training is the system that improves a mount’s power. Begin from the selected mount’s management screen, not from the decoration or skin controls.

  1. Open Main Menu > Character > Mount.
  2. Select the mount you want to improve. Check its name and portrait before opening the enhancement controls.
  3. Open the training or enhancement option. The exact label may vary with the current interface, but it is the control associated with improving mount statistics.
  4. Review the attempt. Inspect the materials and any displayed success information before confirming. The official guide does not establish universal material names, quantities, costs, or upgrade thresholds, so use the values shown in your own client.
  5. Confirm only after checking the selected mount. Training is not guaranteed; an attempt can produce success, super success, or failure.
  6. Recheck the result. Look at the mount’s displayed statistics and grade after the animation or result notice finishes. Do not assume that opening the training screen itself changed a stat.

What the three training outcomes mean

Outcome Practical meaning How to treat it
Success The training attempt advances the mount normally according to the result shown in-game. Verify the updated stat or progress before starting another attempt.
Super success The game reports a better-than-normal training result. Read the post-attempt values; do not assume a fixed bonus unless the client states one.
Failure The attempt does not produce the intended improvement. Do not describe the displayed training increase as guaranteed, and check the next attempt’s requirements before retrying.

The available official information confirms these outcome types but does not publish a single success rate or a universal formula. Any percentage shown by the game for a particular attempt is the authoritative value for that attempt.

Grades, upgrades, and stat ceilings

Mounts use six grades, from 1★ through 6★. Each grade has a maximum stat limit. When a mount is upgraded, that limit may increase, allowing additional training progress that was not possible at the earlier ceiling.

Grade What is established What is not fixed in the published guide
1★ Has a grade-specific maximum stat limit The exact limit and materials are not stated
2★ Has a grade-specific maximum stat limit The exact limit and materials are not stated
3★ Has a grade-specific maximum stat limit The exact limit and materials are not stated
4★ Has a grade-specific maximum stat limit The exact limit and materials are not stated
5★ Has a grade-specific maximum stat limit The exact limit and materials are not stated
6★ Has a grade-specific maximum stat limit The exact limit and materials are not stated

Because the exact thresholds are not established in the guide, avoid planning around a fixed number of training attempts or a named material unless the current game client displays it. When a mount appears unable to gain more, first check whether it has reached its grade’s ceiling. If the game offers an upgrade that raises the ceiling, review that upgrade before assuming training is bugged.

How to decide which mount to train first

  • Train the mount you actually equip. Its full stats are active, so improvements to it have the clearest immediate effect.
  • Consider your roster’s 30% contributions. An unequipped mount still contributes at 30%, so a broad collection can matter even when you ride one favorite.
  • Check the grade before spending. A mount near its current ceiling may need an upgrade rather than more ordinary training.
  • Use the result screen as your record. Note the before-and-after stat values displayed by the client, especially after a super success.

Training is not the same as customization

The Mount screen may expose several ways to change a mount, but they do different jobs:

Training or enhancement

This is the power system. It can change the mount’s statistics and is subject to success, super success, or failure. Training also interacts with grade-based stat ceilings and upgrades.

Decorations

Decorations alter the mount’s visual presentation. They are not a substitute for a training attempt and should not be expected to raise a stat unless the current item description explicitly says so.

Dyes

Dyes change color or other visual treatment. Select them when your goal is appearance, not progression.

Skins

Skins provide another appearance option. Applying a skin does not mean that the underlying mount has been trained or upgraded.

When troubleshooting a perceived lack of power, return to the training panel and inspect the numeric statistics. A changed color, decoration, or model confirms a cosmetic update only.

Why training matters when you can already ride

Simply owning or summoning a mount answers the travel problem; training answers the progression problem. The active mount’s full contribution is tied to its current statistics, while every other owned mount supplies a smaller 30% contribution. Training therefore matters most when you want to improve the values attached to the mount you use as active.

Training also gives a mount room to grow within its grade. A grade’s ceiling limits how far its statistics can advance until an upgrade raises that limit. This creates a practical order of operations: identify the mount you equip, train it while progress is available, and investigate a grade upgrade when the ceiling blocks further improvement.

Common problems and fixes

The mount I selected does not appear in the field

Reopen Character > Mount and check that the mount is owned and marked active. Selecting a locked mount or viewing its information is not the same as equipping it. After confirming the active state, return to gameplay and use the mount control again.

My statistics did not rise after training

Check the result notice first. A failed attempt is an official outcome, not proof that the menu malfunctioned. If the result was successful, compare the displayed statistics and confirm that you trained the intended mount. Also check whether the mount has reached its grade’s maximum stat limit.

I cannot find the materials or cost described by an older guide

Do not assume a missing item is required. Published mount information does not establish a universal list of materials, quantities, or prices, and interface content can change. Use the requirements currently shown for the selected mount in your client.

The mount looks different but seems no stronger

You probably changed a decoration, dye, or skin. Open the training or enhancement panel and inspect the numeric statistics; appearance controls are separate from power progression.

A button name does not match a video or written guide

Follow the current client’s Mount screen and active-state indicator. Labels can change with updates or control layouts. The stable navigation route is Main Menu > Character > Mount, while the exact action text may differ.

Mount availability changes over time

The roster is not static. A September 2026 update note announced a new Runic Reaper Howl mount for that month. The announcement does not make every acquisition detail permanent, so check the current in-game roster and requirement panel before planning around it. The same caution applies to any mount introduced after the guide you are reading.

A reliable mount routine

  1. Open Main Menu > Character > Mount.
  2. Select the owned mount you intend to use.
  3. Equip or summon it, then verify the model in gameplay.
  4. Return to the same screen and open training or enhancement.
  5. Read the selected mount, requirements, and displayed outcome chance or warning before confirming.
  6. After the attempt, check whether the result was success, super success, or failure and record the new statistics.
  7. If progress stops, check the six-grade ceiling and any available upgrade.
  8. Use decorations, dyes, or skins only when you want a visual change.

This routine keeps the three decisions separate: which mount is active, how strong it is, and how it looks. That separation prevents accidental training on the wrong mount and makes a failed attempt or a reached stat ceiling easier to diagnose.
