A ferromagnetic Ni-Mn-Ga alloy can move twin boundaries when an applied magnetic field favors one martensite variant over another. A conventional alloy such as nickel-titanium (NiTi, often called Nitinol) normally changes shape through a reversible, temperature-driven transformation between martensite and austenite. NiTi can also transform under stress and show superelasticity.
That distinction determines the actuator, operating environment, achievable strain, response rate, manufacturing route and application risk. Ni-Mn-Ga is not automatically a faster or higher-performing replacement for NiTi: its large published strains are conditional research results, while NiTi has a much more established manufacturing and application base.

What makes Ni-Mn-Ga a magnetic shape-memory alloy?
Ni-Mn-Ga belongs to the ferromagnetic Heusler-alloy family. In the martensitic state, its crystal can exist as several variants. Each variant has a crystallographic orientation and a preferred, or easy, direction for magnetization. Twin boundaries separate those variants.
When a magnetic field is applied, the alloy lowers its magnetic energy by increasing the amount of the variant whose easy axis is favorably aligned with the field. Twin boundaries move, one variant grows and another shrinks, and the part changes length or shape. The field is therefore driving variant rearrangement within martensite, rather than simply heating the material until it becomes a different phase.

This mechanism is often called magnetic-field-induced strain or magnetic shape memory. It is important not to read the name as a promise that every Ni-Mn-Ga composition will undergo a complete austenite-to-martensite transformation whenever a magnet is nearby. Response depends on composition, martensitic structure, twin-boundary mobility, specimen form, magnetic field, temperature and mechanical load.
Twin reorientation is not the same as a phase transformation
Large strains reported for Ni-Mn-Ga commonly come from changing the proportions of existing martensite variants. Some compositions and related alloy systems are also studied for magnetic-field-induced structural transformations. Those are different phenomena and should not be conflated when interpreting a particular experiment.
For an actuator designer, the distinction affects the operating cycle. A twin-reorientation device may return when the field is removed only if elastic forces, a bias spring, a second field direction or another design feature drives the variants back. The material’s response is not defined by the word “magnetic” alone; the martensitic structure and boundary mobility determine whether useful, repeatable motion occurs.

How conventional NiTi shape memory works
NiTi is the clearest representative of a conventional thermal shape-memory alloy, although the conventional SMA category also includes other alloy families with different properties. In NiTi, the useful shape-memory effect is associated with a reversible transformation between a low-temperature martensitic phase and a higher-temperature austenitic phase.
A typical thermal cycle deforms martensite, heats the part through its transformation range and allows austenite to recover the trained shape. Cooling reverses the transformation. The exact transformation temperatures and functional response depend on composition and processing, so “NiTi” does not identify one universal set of temperatures or strains.
NiTi can also be stress-driven
When NiTi is held in an appropriate temperature range, applied stress can induce martensite and the material can recover when the stress is released. This is the superelastic effect. It is distinct from a conventional one-way thermal shape-memory cycle, but it means NiTi is not limited to heating and cooling in every application.
Stress-induced transformation does not make NiTi magnetic. It remains a mechanically or thermally actuated alloy; the available stimulus is stress, temperature or a combination of the two, not the magnetic twin-variant mechanism used by Ni-Mn-Ga.
Ni-Mn-Ga versus NiTi at a glance
| Comparison axis | Ni-Mn-Ga magnetic SMA | Conventional thermal SMA (NiTi example) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary stimulus | Applied magnetic field | Heating and cooling; stress can induce transformation in superelastic use |
| Main mechanism in this comparison | Twin-boundary motion and martensite-variant rearrangement | Reversible martensite/austenite transformation |
| What physically moves | Relative fractions of martensite variants | Crystal structure changes between martensite and austenite |
| Reported strain in the cited literature | 6% for a 5M structure and 10% for a 7M structure in fields below 800 kA/m; specific research conditions | No matched value established under identical geometry, temperature, load and cycle conditions |
| Rate-limiting factors | Field-source dynamics, magnetic circuit, twin mobility, geometry, load and temperature | Heating and cooling power, heat transfer, geometry, load and transformation kinetics |
| Material sensitivity | Strong dependence on composition, martensitic structure, twin mobility, form, field, temperature and load | Transformation temperatures and response depend strongly on composition and processing |
| Manufacturing position | Research and specialist development; brittleness and processing remain significant constraints | Broadly established in biomedical and engineering products, with process-sensitive behavior |
The table is a mechanism and design comparison, not a claim that one alloy wins every performance category. In particular, the Ni-Mn-Ga strain values cannot be compared with an unrelated NiTi maximum as though both came from the same test.
What the 6% and 10% Ni-Mn-Ga figures actually mean
A 2005 review by Söderberg, Ge, Sozinov, Hannula and Lindroos reported 6% response for a 5M structure and 10% for a 7M structure in magnetic fields below 800 kA/m. Those are review-reported results for particular modulated martensitic structures and specified experimental conditions.

They are not a guaranteed strain rating for all Ni-Mn-Ga parts. A sample with a different composition, crystal structure, texture, geometry, temperature or applied load may produce a substantially different result. The field value is also not a universal requirement: the field needed to move boundaries depends on the material state and test configuration.
Nor do the figures establish a direct Ni-Mn-Ga-versus-NiTi ranking. No matched head-to-head statistic under identical geometry, temperature, load, field and cycling conditions is established here. A fair comparison must specify those variables and distinguish free strain from useful stroke under load.

Why the field number is an engineering condition, not a product rating
The value below 800 kA/m describes the magnetic-field range associated with the reported demonstrations. It does not tell a designer what field will exist in an assembled actuator, because field strength varies with coil turns, current, pole geometry, air gap, magnetic materials and distance from the source. Field direction matters as well: the easy axis must be favorably oriented, and a nonuniform field can make different portions of a part respond differently.
A useful specification therefore states the field at the active material, its direction and uniformity, the temperature and mechanical preload, and whether the specimen is a single crystal, textured material or another form. Without those details, a percentage and a field number cannot predict stroke or force in a finished device.
Operating conditions and response speed
Why magnetic actuation can be attractive
A magnetic field can change the variant population without waiting for the entire component to be heated and cooled. That can remove the bulk thermal cycle from the actuation path and may enable rapid command response in a suitably designed system.
System speed still depends on the field source. Coil inductance, current-driver bandwidth, magnetic-core saturation, air gap, eddy-current heating, field uniformity and the time required for the part to move under load all matter. A small specimen in a strong laboratory magnet and a large actuator driven by a compact coil are not equivalent cases.
Magnetic hardware also affects packaging. Coils, cores, pole pieces, sensors and shielding can add volume, mass and electrical losses. A permanent magnet may provide a bias field, but changing or modulating the working field still requires an appropriate magnetic arrangement. The practical question is not whether a hand-held magnet produces a visible movement; it is whether the complete field circuit delivers repeatable force and stroke throughout the duty cycle.
Why NiTi response is often thermally limited
For a thermal NiTi actuator, the part must gain or lose enough heat to cross its transformation range. Electrical resistance heating can be quick in a thin wire, while cooling a thick component may be much slower. Convection, conduction, radiation, packaging and the surrounding fluid determine the practical cycle time.
Consequently, it is not accurate to label Ni-Mn-Ga simply “fast” and NiTi simply “slow.” Compare complete actuators at the required stroke, force, temperature and duty cycle. A field generator may be the dominant cost, mass or power consumer in one design; a heater and heat sink may dominate another.

Material and manufacturing constraints
Ni-Mn-Ga: composition and structure are decisive
Small composition changes can alter the martensitic structure, magnetic anisotropy, transformation behavior and twin-boundary mobility. The sample form also matters: the response of a carefully prepared research specimen does not automatically transfer to a part with different dimensions, defects, texture or constraints.
Reviews of Ni-Mn-Ga identify brittleness and manufacturing difficulty as major barriers to wider deployment. Brittle behavior complicates machining, joining, shock tolerance and the production of complex, reliable shapes. Processing must preserve the structure that allows mobile twin boundaries; a material that shows a large laboratory strain may be unsuitable if it cannot survive assembly or repeated loading.
These constraints create indirect costs even when the alloy itself is available. Specialist crystal growth or processing, custom magnetic fixtures, destructive characterization and extra screening can increase development time and qualification expense. The appropriate comparison is total system cost, including the field source, controls, packaging and testing, rather than raw material price alone.
NiTi: mature, but not insensitive
NiTi has a broad record in biomedical and engineering applications, which reflects a more established supply chain and processing knowledge rather than universal material behavior. Composition, heat treatment, cold work, geometry and training history set the transformation temperatures, hysteresis, recoverable strain and fatigue response.
That maturity simplifies qualification, but a designer still has to specify the intended transformation range, stress, cycle count, surface condition and joining method. A catalog label alone is not a substitute for a component-level test. NiTi processing and finishing also affect how reliably a part reaches its intended temperature and how it withstands repeated mechanical loading.

Choosing the stimulus your system can provide
Choose Ni-Mn-Ga when a controlled field is practical
- The mechanism must be driven remotely or without direct thermal contact.
- A magnetic circuit, coil or permanent-magnet arrangement can supply the required field in the available volume.
- The design can accommodate composition- and structure-specific characterization.
- Rapid field changes are more useful than a simple low-cost heater, after accounting for driver power and magnetic hardware.
- The application can tolerate specialist manufacturing and a qualification program aimed at brittleness, load limits and cycling.
Choose NiTi when thermal or stress actuation fits the duty
- The part can be heated and cooled, or can operate as a superelastic element in the appropriate temperature range.
- Established biomedical or engineering manufacturing routes reduce development risk.
- The required motion can be delivered by a trained NiTi geometry under the actual load and cycle conditions.
- The surrounding environment provides a practical way to reject heat between actuations.
- Supplier availability, joining, inspection and long-term qualification are more important than magnetic-field operation.
These are selection directions, not universal rules. A Ni-Mn-Ga device may be the right answer where field access is uniquely valuable, while NiTi may be preferable for a compact, inexpensive thermal actuator or a proven superelastic component.
A practical comparison workflow
- Define the motion and load. Record required stroke or rotation, blocking force, free displacement, allowable stress, cycle count and failure consequence. Do not use a headline strain as a substitute for these requirements.
- Set the operating envelope. Specify minimum and maximum temperatures, heating or cooling rates, magnetic-field space, mechanical constraints and nearby magnetic materials. Ni-Mn-Ga performance can change with temperature and load; NiTi behavior changes with its transformation range and processing.
- Identify the available stimulus. For Ni-Mn-Ga, calculate field strength and uniformity at the active material, coil current and magnetic losses. For NiTi, calculate heating energy, cooling time and the temperature distribution through the part.
- Select and characterize the exact material form. Verify composition, martensitic structure, dimensions, texture or processing state and initial training. Test the actual form rather than relying on a result from a different specimen.
- Measure useful output under load. Record displacement, force, temperature, field and time together. Separate free response from blocked-force operation and note whether the motion is twin reorientation, phase transformation or superelastic recovery.
- Test reversibility and cycling. Examine drift, hysteresis, residual strain, heating, demagnetization effects where relevant, and mechanical damage. Include overload and off-nominal temperature tests.
- Qualify the complete actuator. Add the driver, magnetic circuit or thermal hardware, supports, seals, sensors and control software. The final duty cycle—not an isolated material maximum—determines whether the design is viable.
Common misconceptions to avoid
“Any magnet will make Ni-Mn-Ga move.”
The field must be strong and oriented appropriately for the particular composition and structure, and the twin boundaries must be mobile. A demonstration magnet does not establish useful actuator performance.
“The 10% figure is the normal Ni-Mn-Ga specification.”
It is a reported result for a 7M structure in fields below 800 kA/m under specified research conditions. Treat it as evidence of potential, not a guaranteed value for a commercial component.
“Magnetic shape memory always means austenite and martensite switch.”
The large magnetic-field-induced response discussed here is principally variant rearrangement within martensite. Structural phase transformations are a separate possibility for some compositions and related systems.

“NiTi only works when heated.”
NiTi can show stress-induced transformation and superelastic recovery in a suitable state. That does not make it magnetically actuated, but it broadens the ways a NiTi component can be used.

Output force, fatigue life, control authority, packaging, thermal or magnetic power, manufacturability and safety may matter more than free strain. Compare the complete device at its required duty cycle.

Does Ni-Mn-Ga change shape with any permanent magnet?
Not reliably. Motion requires a field of suitable strength and orientation, a composition and martensitic structure with mobile twin boundaries, and a load that the magnetic driving force can overcome. A permanent magnet can be part of a bias or field circuit, but its presence alone does not guarantee useful stroke, force or reversibility.
Is Ni-Mn-Ga faster than Nitinol?
It can avoid waiting for bulk heating and cooling, which is attractive for rapid command changes. Actual speed is set by the field generator, current driver, magnetic losses, specimen geometry, twin motion and mechanical load. A thin electrically heated NiTi wire may outperform a poorly packaged magnetic actuator, so speed must be compared at the complete-system level.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Are the 6% and 10% values directly comparable with NiTi strain?
No. The 6% value for a 5M structure and 10% value for a 7M structure were reported under particular Ni-Mn-Ga conditions in fields below 800 kA/m. No matched test using identical geometry, temperature, load and cycling conditions establishes a head-to-head ranking against NiTi. Free strain and loaded stroke must be reported separately.
Does magnetic actuation require a phase change?
The principal large-strain mechanism discussed for Ni-Mn-Ga is twin-variant rearrangement within martensite. Some compositions and related systems are also associated with magnetic-field-induced structural transformations, but that is a distinct mechanism. The phase state, modulation and boundary mobility of the tested material must be identified before interpreting the motion.
Why is Ni-Mn-Ga harder to commercialize?
Reviews identify brittleness and processing difficulty as important barriers. Brittle material is harder to machine, join and protect from shock, and processing must preserve the structure that permits twin-boundary motion. Those issues add qualification work and make it harder to transfer a high-performing research specimen into a complex, repeatable component.
Is NiTi always the lower-cost option?
There is no universal price comparison. NiTi benefits from established biomedical and engineering manufacturing routes, while a Ni-Mn-Ga system may need specialist material processing, magnetic hardware and additional characterization. Driver, packaging, cooling, inspection and qualification costs can dominate the budget, so compare the full actuator rather than the alloy purchase price.
Can NiTi be used without a heater?
Yes, in superelastic service. At an appropriate temperature, applied stress can induce martensite and releasing the stress can produce recovery. This is not magnetic actuation and is distinct from a one-way thermal memory cycle, but it can eliminate an external heater when the required stress and temperature window are available.
Best Value
What should a supplier or test report specify?
Request composition and processing state, martensitic structure, specimen geometry and texture, transformation or operating temperature, applied field and direction for Ni-Mn-Ga, mechanical preload, free and loaded displacement, force, cycle history and failure criteria. Without these details, a headline strain or response time is difficult to transfer to a design.
Which alloy is the better choice?
There is no universal winner. Ni-Mn-Ga offers a distinctive route to actuation through magnetic-field-controlled martensite variants and can avoid external heating and cooling of the active material. Its reported 5M and 7M strains show why it remains important in actuator and sensor research, but brittleness, processing difficulty and strong composition dependence limit straightforward translation.
NiTi offers a well-established platform whose thermal transformation and superelastic behavior can be engineered through composition and processing. It is usually the lower-risk starting point when a heater, ambient cooling path or mechanically loaded superelastic element fits the application.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does Ni-Mn-Ga produce magnetic shape memory?
An applied magnetic field favors martensite variants whose easy magnetization axes align with the field. Twin boundaries then move, changing the variant proportions and the part’s dimensions. The main mechanism is variant rearrangement inside martensite, not automatically a full austenite-to-martensite transformation.
Does every Ni-Mn-Ga alloy provide 10% strain?
No. The 10% result applies to a reported 7M structure under specified conditions; a 5M structure was reported at 6% in fields below 800 kA/m. Composition, structure, geometry, temperature, field, twin mobility and load can all change the result.
Which is faster, Ni-Mn-Ga or NiTi?
Neither is universally faster. Ni-Mn-Ga can avoid bulk heating and cooling, but speed depends on the field source and mechanical response. NiTi speed depends on heating and cooling; thin wires may cycle quickly while thick parts reject heat slowly. Compare complete actuators and duty cycles.
Why is NiTi more widely used?
NiTi has established biomedical and engineering applications, supply routes and processing knowledge. Ni-Mn-Ga remains more specialized because brittleness and manufacturing difficulty complicate machining, joining, shock tolerance and reliable production. This is a maturity difference, not proof that Ni-Mn-Ga has no applications.
Can NiTi operate through stress instead of temperature?
Yes. In a suitable temperature range, stress can induce martensite and unloading can produce superelastic recovery. This expands NiTi’s use beyond thermal cycling, but the mechanism is mechanical and thermally dependent rather than magnetic.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose Ni-Mn-Ga when magnetic-field control, remote actuation or avoidance of bulk thermal cycling justifies specialist material and field hardware. Choose NiTi when established manufacturing, superelastic operation or a practical heat-and-cool cycle offers lower qualification risk. The reported 6% and 10% Ni-Mn-Ga strains are conditional results, not universal specifications; test the complete actuator under its real field, temperature, load and cycling requirements.
