Nginx and Apache can both accept connections, serve named sites, and forward requests to an application—but they express those jobs differently. In Nginx, a listen directive sits inside a server block. Apache separates the global Listen directives that open endpoints from <VirtualHost> blocks that configure sites. In both servers, the request must reach the right address and port before its hostname can select a virtual host.
This guide compares those configuration steps, shows how proxy path prefixes behave, and explains why a request may land on the default site. Examples are starting points, not tested configurations; check the documentation for your installed version and validate settings in your environment.
What is the difference between a listener, a virtual host, and a reverse proxy?
- Listener: the address and port where the server accepts connections.
- Virtual host: the site configuration selected for a request, often by its hostname after the connection reaches a listener.
- Reverse proxy: a selected site configuration that forwards requests to another server, such as an application running locally.
These are related but separate tasks. A virtual-host block does not necessarily open a network port, and a proxy rule does not create DNS records. The server must be reachable first; then it can match a site and route the request.
How do I change the port Nginx listens on?
In Nginx, put listen inside the HTTP server block for the site. For example, listen 8080; configures that server block to listen on port 8080. The precise address, protocol, and options you need depend on the deployment and installed Nginx version. See the Nginx listen directive documentation.

If listen is omitted, the documented default depends on privileges: Nginx uses *:80 when running with superuser privileges and *:8000 otherwise. Do not rely on that implicit behavior for a production listener; configure the intended endpoint explicitly.
Changing the directive is only one part of making a port reachable. Confirm that the operating system permits the process to bind it and that host firewalls or cloud network policies allow incoming traffic. A listening socket alone does not guarantee outside access.
How do I set up virtual hosts in Nginx or Apache?
Both servers can serve multiple named sites, but their configuration boundaries differ. Nginx’s server block combines the listener and site configuration. Apache has global Listen directives for endpoints, with individual <VirtualHost> containers for host-specific settings.

| Task | Nginx | Apache HTTP Server |
|---|---|---|
| Open an endpoint | listen inside an HTTP server block. |
Global Listen directive; Listen 80 accepts connections on that port across interfaces, while an address can be specified to bind a particular interface. |
| Configure a site | server { ... }, generally with listen and server_name. |
<VirtualHost address:port> ... </VirtualHost>, commonly with ServerName, optional ServerAlias, and site settings such as DocumentRoot. |
| Select a fallback | Use default_server; if none is declared, the first server for that address-and-port pair is the default. |
The first name-based virtual host for the selected address-and-port pair is the default when no hostname matches. |
Nginx example: one listener and two names
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.com www.example.com;
root /var/www/example;
}
Nginx treats server as configuration for a virtual server and does not sharply separate IP-based and name-based virtual servers. Its server-selection behavior is described in the core module documentation.

Listen 80
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName example.com
ServerAlias www.example.com
DocumentRoot "/var/www/example"
</VirtualHost>
Listen opens the endpoint; the <VirtualHost> block applies site-specific directives but does not itself make Apache listen on that address. Apache’s binding documentation explains listener configuration, and its virtual-host guide covers host containers and name matching.
In Apache, the server first selects the best address-and-port match, then checks ServerName and ServerAlias. In Nginx, server blocks are grouped by their configured listening endpoint and the hostname helps select a server within that group. Neither configuration creates public DNS records: the hostname must resolve to the server’s address independently. For local testing before public DNS is ready, a hosts-file mapping can direct a test hostname to the intended IP.

Why is my request going to the default virtual host?
A default site is the fallback when the request reaches an endpoint but no configured hostname matches. In Apache, the first name-based virtual host for the selected address and port handles unmatched or missing names. In Nginx, the explicitly marked default_server handles the endpoint; if none is marked, the first server configured for that address and port becomes the default.
Check the path from client to site in order: hostname resolution, destination address and port, then server-name matching. A request sent to a different port, or one that carries a hostname absent from the intended site configuration, can appear to be a virtual-host problem even though the mismatch occurred earlier.

How do I configure Apache as a reverse proxy?
Apache’s reverse-proxy functionality is provided by proxy modules. Make sure the required modules are available, then put the mapping in the appropriate virtual host. Apache’s reverse proxy guide describes the setup.
ProxyPass "/" "http://127.0.0.1:8000/"
ProxyPassReverse "/" "http://127.0.0.1:8000/"
ProxyPass maps incoming paths to the backend. ProxyPassReverse commonly rewrites relevant backend redirect headers so a redirect can point back through the public proxy rather than exposing the backend address.
How do Nginx proxy paths and trailing slashes work?
Nginx uses a location block to select requests and proxy_pass to forward them. A key distinction is whether the proxy_pass URL includes a URI component. When it does, Nginx replaces the normalized portion of the request URI that matched the location. Without a URI component, it passes the request URI differently. Read the proxy_pass documentation before relying on a particular prefix transformation.

| Configuration | Incoming request | Path sent to backend |
|---|---|---|
location /api/ { proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8000/; } (proxy URL includes /) |
/api/items?id=2 |

location /api/ { proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8000; } (proxy URL has no URI component) |
/api/items?id=2 |
/api/items?id=2 |
The examples illustrate the prefix behavior for these paired configurations; other location forms and URI details can affect the result. Decide whether the backend expects to receive the public prefix, then make the location and proxy URL agree with that expectation. Apache’s ProxyPass mappings also need consistent path prefixes and trailing-slash choices; use the matching backend mapping and verify the actual path and redirect behavior for the application.
Nginx example: forward to a local application
http {
upstream app_backend {
server 127.0.0.1:8000;
}
server {
listen 80 default_server;
server_name example.com www.example.com;
location / {
proxy_pass http://app_backend;
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
}
}
}
This example forwards requests to a local backend and passes the original host and client IP in headers. Nginx documents request forwarding in the HTTP proxy module guide. An upstream group can also contain multiple servers; Nginx uses round-robin by default when no balancing method is specified, as explained in the load balancing guide.
Which server should I choose for these tasks?
Choose based on the configuration model your team understands, the modules and application integrations you need, and how you want to maintain host matching and proxy rules. Nginx expresses a site and its listener together in a server block; Apache separates endpoint listening from virtual-host configuration. Both can route to backends, but their path-mapping syntax and redirect handling differ.
Do not infer that one is inherently faster from these configuration differences. A meaningful performance comparison would need a defined workload, versions, and deployment environment; the official configuration references do not establish a head-to-head result.

What should I check when a site or proxy does not work?
- Confirm the hostname resolves to the intended server IP. A virtual-host block does not create DNS records; use a local hosts-file mapping if you need to test before public DNS is configured.
- Confirm a process is listening on the requested address and port, and that the operating-system firewall or cloud network policy permits traffic.
- Confirm the request reaches the expected server and port before debugging hostname matching.
- Check configured names, default-host behavior, and ordering. For Apache, inspect
apachectl -Son Unix-like systems orhttpd.exe -Son Windows; for Nginx, inspect the relevant server blocks and listener defaults. - Compare the incoming URI with the exact path the backend should receive. Check Nginx
proxy_passURI behavior or ApacheProxyPassprefixes, including trailing slashes. - Verify that the backend is reachable from the proxy host and that the application knows its externally visible scheme and hostname when generating absolute redirects.
- Check directive behavior against the installed server version. Nginx’s rolling proxy documentation notes version-dependent defaults; for example, its
proxy_http_versiondefault changed in version 1.29.7.
