Nginx Showing a Blank index.php Page: How to Fix It

A blank index.php page usually means Nginx received the request but PHP-FPM was given the wrong script path, the wrong socket, or a script that failed before producing output. A 200 OK response does not prove that the intended PHP file ran. Check the active server block, document root, PHP-FPM endpoint, SCRIPT_FILENAME, and both Nginx and PHP-FPM logs in that order.

What a blank PHP response actually tells you

When a static file loads but /index.php is an empty white page, the web server is generally working far enough to accept the request. The failure is usually in the handoff from Nginx to PHP-FPM or in PHP execution itself. Nginx can select index.php, connect to an upstream, and still return an empty body if PHP-FPM cannot resolve the script or the application exits with an error before sending output.

HTTP status is not sufficient evidence. The PHP bug tracker documents cases where PHP-FPM returns 200 OK with a blank response when the requested script does not exist. Treat the response body, logs, and resolved file path as more useful evidence than the status code alone.

Symptom Most likely area What to verify
/ is blank, while a static file works Index resolution or PHP execution root, index index.php, PHP location, and logs
/index.php returns 200 with no body Wrong script path or PHP failure SCRIPT_FILENAME, file existence, PHP-FPM log
Connection refused or upstream errors PHP-FPM endpoint The socket or TCP address in fastcgi_pass
“No input file specified” Path construction Document root, symlinks, rewrites, and fastcgi_script_name
PHP fatal error in the service log Application or runtime Fix the reported PHP error; keep production error display disabled

How Nginx should route index.php

A request for / passes through several decisions:

  1. The matching server block is selected.
  2. The root directive maps the URL to a directory on disk.
  3. index index.php tells Nginx which file to try when the URI ends in a slash.
  4. A PHP location matches the resulting .php URI.
  5. fastcgi_pass sends the request to the listening PHP-FPM socket or TCP endpoint.
  6. SCRIPT_FILENAME tells PHP-FPM which physical script to execute.

Every layer must describe the same deployment. If the server block points at /var/www/site/current/public but PHP-FPM receives a path under /var/www/site/public, the request can look successful from Nginx’s perspective while PHP has no file to run.

Step-by-step fix

1. Inspect the configuration Nginx actually loaded

Do not edit a file based only on its name or location. Run:

nginx -T

This prints the complete active configuration, including included files and the server blocks Nginx is using. Find the block for the affected hostname and note its root, index, PHP location, fastcgi_pass, and log directives. A duplicate server block or an unexpected default server is a common reason that a correct-looking edit has no effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Confirm the document root contains the deployed file

The root directory must be the directory that actually contains the deployed index.php. Check the path on the server, including capitalization and release or symlink directories. A typical arrangement might be:

root /var/www/example/public;
index index.php index.html;

The exact path is installation-specific. The important test is that appending /index.php to the configured root identifies the real file that should execute.

Nginx uses the index directive when a URI ends in a slash. If index.php is absent from that list, a request for / may not reach the PHP location even though a direct request for /index.php does. Conversely, adding index.php cannot repair a wrong root.

3. Validate syntax before changing request behavior

Run:

nginx -t

Fix syntax errors, missing include files, and invalid directive values before reloading. The test checks the configuration that Nginx can parse; it does not prove that the PHP socket exists or that the application path is correct. After a successful test, reload Nginx using the service procedure for your operating system, then retest the URL.

4. Align the PHP location with the running PHP-FPM service

A minimal PHP location has to pass the request to the endpoint that PHP-FPM is actually listening on and provide the script path PHP expects:

location ~ .php$ {
    include fastcgi_params;
    fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php8.2-fpm.sock;
    fastcgi_index index.php;
    fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name;
}

This is a structural example, not a universal copy-and-paste configuration. Replace the socket with the endpoint supplied by the installed PHP-FPM service. Some systems use a different PHP version, a different socket directory, or a TCP address such as an internal service name and port.

fastcgi_pass selects the upstream endpoint. fastcgi_index supplies the filename appended for a URI ending in a slash. SCRIPT_FILENAME is especially important: PHP uses it to determine the script name, while QUERY_STRING carries URL parameters. If the value resolves to a nonexistent file, PHP-FPM may return an empty 200 response instead of the page you expected.

Keep the PHP location narrower than necessary. Passing arbitrary paths to PHP can expose files that should be served only as static content. Use the application’s documented front-controller rules when it does not execute every PHP file directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Verify the endpoint named by fastcgi_pass

Find the socket or TCP listener created by the running PHP-FPM service and compare it character-for-character with the Nginx configuration. A version-specific filename such as php8.2-fpm.sock is only an example; the installed service may use another version.

  • If the socket path does not exist, PHP-FPM may be stopped, configured to listen elsewhere, or installed under a different version.
  • If a TCP endpoint is configured, verify the address and port reachable from the Nginx process.
  • If the path exists but Nginx reports permission errors, check that the Nginx worker can access the socket and its parent directories.

A connection refusal or missing socket is an upstream connectivity problem, not an index.php coding problem. Correct the endpoint or start and configure PHP-FPM before changing rewrite rules.

6. Prove the script path that PHP-FPM receives

With root /var/www/example/public and a request for /index.php, the common setting $document_root$fastcgi_script_name should produce:

/var/www/example/public/index.php

Compare that constructed path with the file on disk. Pay attention to:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Release symlinks such as current pointing to an old deployment.
  • A different root in a nested location block.
  • Rewrites that change the script name before FastCGI processing.
  • Case-sensitive filenames on Linux.
  • File and directory permissions that prevent the PHP-FPM worker from reading the script.

If the application uses a symlinked release directory, make sure both Nginx and PHP-FPM can traverse every parent directory and that the link target still exists. A valid URL and a valid Nginx configuration do not compensate for a missing target file.

7. Use try_files for existence checks and front controllers

try_files can stop Nginx from forwarding a nonexistent PHP file and can route application requests to a front controller. A common pattern is:

location / {
    try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?$query_string;
}

The exact fallback depends on the application. The final target must be the real entry file, and the PHP location must then construct the matching physical path. If the application expects a different front controller, replace /index.php with that documented entry point rather than adding a second, conflicting rewrite.

Use try_files deliberately. A configuration that checks only $uri may return a 404 for application routes that should be handled by the front controller; a fallback that points to the wrong directory recreates the same blank-page symptom under a different URL.

8. Read Nginx and PHP-FPM logs together

Nginx’s error_log records upstream and request-processing failures, while access_log shows the request, status, and often the response size. The default log location varies by installation. If you cannot find it, nginx -V can reveal compiled paths and options that help identify the layout.

Then inspect the PHP-FPM service log for the same request time. Interpret the combination rather than relying on one file:

  • Connection refused, upstream unavailable, or missing socket: the fastcgi_pass value does not match the running listener, or PHP-FPM is stopped.
  • “No input file specified” or an empty body with status 200: inspect SCRIPT_FILENAME, root, symlink targets, rewrites, and file existence.
  • A PHP fatal error or uncaught exception: fix the application or runtime problem reported by PHP-FPM. Nginx may show only a blank body when PHP errors are not displayed.
  • Permission-denied messages: correct ownership, mode bits, ACLs, or directory traversal permissions without making the entire document root world-writable.

Logging is also the safest way to diagnose production failures. Enable detailed PHP error reporting only in a controlled development environment; in production, retain useful logs while keeping error details out of the response body.

9. Compare direct and directory requests with curl

Request both forms and include headers:

curl -i https://example.test/
curl -i https://example.test/index.php

Compare the status, response headers, and body length. Test a known static file as a control if one is available. The results narrow the fault:

Choosing between common configuration approaches

Decision Option A Option B Choose based on
PHP-FPM transport Unix socket TCP endpoint Socket paths and permissions on one host versus service separation or container networking.
Application routing Execute requested PHP scripts directly Use try_files and a front controller Whether the application has rewrite-based routes and a single documented entry file.
Error visibility Detailed PHP errors during development Errors logged but not displayed in production Fast diagnosis versus preventing stack traces and paths from reaching visitors.

Neither transport is inherently responsible for a blank page. A Unix socket fails when its path or permissions are wrong; TCP fails when its address, port, firewall, or service discovery is wrong. Likewise, direct execution is simpler for a small script set, while front-controller routing is usually required by applications whose URLs do not map to physical files.

Failure branches and precise remedies

The configuration test fails

Do not reload a configuration that nginx -t rejects. Read the reported file and line, correct missing semicolons, invalid paths, or duplicate directives, and run the test again. An include-file error can prevent the intended server block from loading at all.

The socket exists but Nginx still cannot connect

Check the socket’s ownership and mode, then verify directory traversal permissions for the Nginx worker user. Confirm that PHP-FPM is listening on that socket rather than merely leaving a stale file behind. The service log can distinguish a startup failure from an access-denied failure.

The path is correct but PHP emits nothing

Read the PHP-FPM log for fatal errors, parse errors, missing extensions, or application bootstrap failures. A script that intentionally produces no output is different from a script that crashes before output; logs are the way to tell them apart. Test a minimal diagnostic script only in a protected development environment, and remove it afterward.

Only rewritten URLs fail

Request /index.php directly first. If it works, inspect the try_files fallback and any rewrite rules. Ensure the fallback preserves the query string when the application needs it and that the final PHP location receives a real script name rather than a virtual route.

The root URL and direct PHP URL disagree

Check the index directive and slash-ending URI behavior. Nginx internally redirects a directory request to the configured index file when that file exists. A missing or differently ordered index list can make / behave differently from /index.php even though PHP itself is healthy.

A safe verification checklist

  • nginx -T shows the server block you intended to edit.
  • root points to the directory containing the deployed index.php.
  • index includes index.php where directory requests should use it.
  • nginx -t passes before every reload.
  • The PHP location includes FastCGI parameters and a correct SCRIPT_FILENAME.
  • fastcgi_pass names the socket or TCP endpoint that PHP-FPM actually listens on.
  • The constructed script path exists and is readable through all parent directories.
  • try_files, if used, falls back to the application’s real front controller.
  • Nginx access and error logs are correlated with PHP-FPM logs at the same timestamp.
  • curl -i tests both / and /index.php; response status alone is not accepted as proof.
  • Detailed PHP errors are limited to development, while production retains server-side logs.

When rebuilding the environment is the practical fix

If the site was moved between distributions, PHP versions, containers, or release directories, repairing one directive may take longer than aligning the deployment cleanly. A managed PHP environment or VPS that explicitly documents Nginx and PHP-FPM support can reduce socket, service, and log-layout differences, but you still need to verify the provider’s current PHP versions, endpoint conventions, permissions model, and support scope for your region and application. Migration does not remove the need to check root, SCRIPT_FILENAME, and logs after the move.

Final diagnosis

A blank index.php page is usually a path or handoff problem, not evidence that Nginx is randomly ignoring PHP. Establish the active server block, match root and index.php to the deployed file, point fastcgi_pass at the listener that exists, construct a real SCRIPT_FILENAME, and then use synchronized Nginx and PHP-FPM logs to resolve the remaining application error. Once those values describe the same file and the same running service, the misleading blank 200 response normally disappears.
