NGINX Security Update FAQ: Affected Versions, Backports, Containers, and Managed Distributions

Whether an NGINX deployment is vulnerable depends on more than the banner version. Identify the NGINX product, complete package or image revision, enabled modules, configured features, vendor advisory, and support status before deciding to patch. An Ubuntu or Debian package can retain an older upstream version while containing a security fix, while a container or managed ingress may run a separate NGINX binary that your host package update does not change.

What to check first when an NGINX security update is announced

Start by classifying the deployment. The remediation path differs for NGINX Open Source, NGINX Plus, a distribution package, an ingress controller, a vendor appliance, and a container image. Record the following before comparing any version with a CVE notice:

  • Product: NGINX Open Source, NGINX Plus, an ingress controller, or a managed reverse-proxy service.
  • Exact build: the full upstream version plus package revision, image tag, image digest, or vendor build identifier.
  • Modules: which dynamic and statically compiled modules are present and loaded.
  • Feature state: whether the feature named by the advisory is enabled and reachable. For CVE-2024-24990, the relevant condition is HTTP/3/QUIC involvement.
  • Operating-system or image base: for example, the distribution and release used by a package or container.
  • Support status: whether the product release and operating-system branch still receive security updates.

Then read the exact upstream or vendor advisory and the security tracker for the operating system that ships your binary. A scanner result based only on an upstream version string is a lead for investigation, not proof that a vendor package remains exposed.

Which NGINX versions are affected by CVE-2024-24990?

The affected range is advisory-specific. The National Vulnerability Database describes CVE-2024-24990 as affecting NGINX Open Source versions from 1.25.0 up to, but not including, 1.25.4 when the HTTP/3/QUIC condition applies. For NGINX Plus, the listed affected lines are R31 before P1 and R30 before P2 under the same HTTP/3/QUIC context.

Product line Affected range named for CVE-2024-24990 What to verify
NGINX Open Source 1.25.0 through versions before 1.25.4 Whether HTTP/3/QUIC is enabled and configured, plus the actual vendor package revision
NGINX Plus R31 before P1; R30 before P2 Release and patch level, HTTP/3/QUIC configuration, and current Plus support status
Distribution or managed build Not determined by the upstream number alone Vendor advisory, fixed package revision, and changelog for the installed build

A deployment running an affected-looking upstream number may not be exploitable if the operating-system maintainer has backported the fix. Conversely, a newer-looking number does not establish safety if the build is from a vendor branch with a different patch history or if a separate module carries the issue. Treat the advisory’s version range and prerequisites as a set: the number, product, module or feature, and build provenance all matter.

How to determine your real NGINX version and build

NGINX Open Source installed from a package

Obtain both the binary’s reported version and the package manager’s complete revision. The binary command commonly reports the upstream release, while the package manager records the distribution suffix that identifies vendor patches. Preserve the output with the host name and date so that an incident record can be reproduced.

  • Check the executable used by the running service rather than assuming the first nginx command in your shell is the deployed binary.
  • Inspect the installed package metadata, including epoch, upstream version, distribution revision, architecture, and changelog entry.
  • Confirm the service unit, container entrypoint, or supervisor configuration points to that same executable.
  • List loaded modules and inspect the effective configuration for the feature named in the advisory.

NGINX Plus

Record the Plus release and patch designation exactly as displayed by the running instance and package metadata. A label such as R31 is not equivalent to R31 P1: the patch suffix can determine whether the security update is present. Also verify whether the release remains inside the supported lifecycle window.

Ingress controllers and managed reverse proxies

Identify the controller or platform release that bundles NGINX. Updating a host’s operating-system package does not alter a controller image running in Kubernetes, and it does not change a provider-managed proxy. Use the controller or platform’s security advisory and fixed release, then verify the running pod, task, or service actually rolled to that release.

Does an Ubuntu or Debian backport fix an old NGINX version?

Yes, a supported distribution can apply the security change to an older upstream branch. This is called a backport. The package may continue to display an upstream-looking version such as 1.24 or 1.28 even though the distributor has incorporated the fix and issued a newer package revision.

Ubuntu’s USN-8563-1 illustrates why the suffix matters: it lists nginx 1.28.3-2ubuntu1.7 as a fixed package revision for the affected supported releases covered by that notice. The upstream portion, 1.28.3, is only part of the identity; -2ubuntu1.7 records Ubuntu’s packaging and security update history.

How to validate a backported fix

  1. Open the distribution security notice that matches your operating-system release and architecture.
  2. Compare the installed package’s complete revision with the fixed revision stated in that notice.
  3. Read the package changelog entry and confirm it references the relevant CVE or security issue.
  4. Check that the running service was restarted or reloaded after the package update, as required by the distributor.
  5. Record the advisory identifier, installed revision, changelog evidence, and restart time for audit and scanner reconciliation.

If a vulnerability scanner reports an NGINX CVE against a backported package, do not immediately replace the distribution package with a manually compiled upstream binary. First reconcile the scanner’s version logic with the vendor’s fixed revision. Escalate only when the installed revision is older than the fixed one, the package is outside support, or the vendor notice does not cover the feature and module combination you run.

Choosing and updating an NGINX Docker image after a CVE

Container operators need to identify three layers: the image reference, the base operating system, and the NGINX binary inside the image. The official Docker image has versioned tags and base-distribution variants. NGINX Plus images are published through a private registry with release and operating-system tags such as r36-debian, r36-alpine, and r36-ubi.

Image detail Why it matters Evidence to retain
Tag Shows the intended release or distribution variant, but tags can move Exact repository and tag used by the deployment
Digest Identifies the immutable image content pulled by the runtime Content digest from the deployed workload
Base distribution Determines package fixes, libc behavior, tooling, and support policy Distribution name, release, and image manifest
Compiled NGINX version Confirms which binary and modules are actually present Version output, build arguments, and module list

Container update procedure

  1. Identify the running image tag and digest from the workload definition and the container runtime.
  2. Check the image publisher’s release notes or security advisory for a patched tag matching your NGINX product and base distribution.
  3. Pull the patched image by explicit tag, then resolve and record its digest. For Plus, use the licensed private-registry repository and the documented release/OS tag format.
  4. Rebuild dependent images so that application layers do not retain the vulnerable binary or libraries.
  5. Run configuration validation and application smoke tests, including HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 paths if those are enabled.
  6. Deploy using a rolling or blue-green strategy, verify the new pods or tasks report the expected digest and NGINX build, and monitor errors.
  7. Keep the previous image reference and deployment manifest available for a controlled rollback.

Do not assume that changing the host’s nginx package patches a container. The container has its own filesystem and binary. Likewise, updating an application image does not patch a sidecar or ingress controller unless that image is replaced too.

What NGINX Plus lifecycle status means for a security fix

NGINX Plus follows a release lifecycle rather than indefinite patching of every historical release. Its release documentation publishes end-of-software-development, end-of-security-updates, and end-of-technical-support dates, along with supported operating systems. Only the two most recent Plus releases receive critical patches and security updates.

Patch in place or move to a newer release?

  • Patch in place when your Plus release is among the two current release lines, the vendor publishes a fixed patch for it, and your operating-system base remains supported.
  • Plan an upgrade when the release has passed its end-of-security-update date, even if no exploit is currently known. Waiting for a backport from an out-of-support line is not a dependable security strategy.
  • Test compatibility before crossing release lines: validate configuration syntax, third-party modules, TLS behavior, HTTP/3/QUIC settings, health checks, and rollback images.

Use the lifecycle table on the current release documentation to determine the exact dates for your release. Dates vary by release and supported operating system, so a generic statement that a release is “old” is not enough for a change decision.

Managed distributions, appliances, and platform advisories

A managed platform may rebuild NGINX, apply patches independently, or expose only a service version banner. The platform’s advisory and package changelog are authoritative for that build. Ask the provider for the fixed platform release, affected feature conditions, rollout status, and the evidence used to verify remediation.

For Kubernetes ingress, update the controller release that contains the fixed NGINX binary. For a cloud load balancer or managed reverse proxy, follow the provider’s maintenance or security notice; changing an unrelated VM package cannot alter a service that runs outside that VM. If the provider cannot identify the bundled NGINX build or its patch status, treat that lack of transparency as an operational risk and document the compensating controls.

Comparing remediation options

Option Patch cadence and support Compatibility and rollback Best evidence
Distribution package Vendor security tracker and supported branch policy Usually preserves distribution integration; rollback uses package versioning Advisory ID, fixed revision, changelog, and running package metadata
Official Open Source container Image publication cadence and base-distribution updates Image replacement is explicit; rollback uses prior tag and digest Image manifest, digest, binary version, and module list
NGINX Plus Lifecycle-limited; only two most recent releases receive critical and security updates Release-line upgrade may require configuration and module testing Plus release/patch, lifecycle dates, registry tag, and digest
Managed platform or ingress Provider or controller release schedule Provider rollout or controller upgrade; host package changes may have no effect Provider advisory, controller version, deployed workload image, and rollout record

Whichever route you choose, compare advisory coverage, support end dates, base distribution and architecture, image or package provenance, configuration compatibility, rollback method, and whether the vulnerable module or feature is enabled.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Trusting the banner version alone

Problem: A banner shows an older upstream number and is assumed vulnerable. Correction: inspect the complete package revision or image digest and match it to the vendor advisory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring feature prerequisites

Problem: A CVE involving HTTP/3/QUIC is treated as exploitable on every NGINX installation. Correction: verify whether the relevant module and configuration are enabled and reachable.

Patching the wrong layer

Problem: An administrator updates the host while the vulnerable NGINX runs inside an ingress image or managed service. Correction: identify the process owner and update the image, controller, or platform release that contains the binary.

Using a floating container tag

Problem: A deployment references a mutable tag, making it difficult to prove which code ran. Correction: record and, where operationally appropriate, pin the digest while monitoring for a replacement patched image.

Leaving an unsupported Plus release in service

Problem: The team waits for a patch to a release past its security-update end date. Correction: schedule a supported release-line upgrade and test rollback before the maintenance window.

A practical verification checklist

  • Deployment type and owner identified.
  • Full NGINX version, package revision, image tag, or Plus patch recorded.
  • Modules and vulnerable feature configuration verified.
  • Upstream advisory and operating-system or platform notice matched to the build.
  • Backport evidence captured from the vendor revision and changelog.
  • Container base distribution, architecture, manifest, and digest recorded.
  • NGINX Plus lifecycle dates checked against the current release documentation.
  • Patched artifact deployed and running process verified after restart or rollout.
  • Configuration, protocol paths, health checks, and dependent applications tested.
  • Rollback artifact, deployment manifest, and verification output retained.

Key takeaways for the four questions administrators ask most

Am I running an affected version? Compare the exact product, build, module, feature state, and advisory—not just the banner number.

Does an Ubuntu or Debian backport fix an old version? It can. The vendor package revision and changelog are the deciding evidence; Ubuntu’s fixed nginx 1.28.3-2ubuntu1.7 example shows why the suffix matters.

Which Docker image should I pull? Use the patched image for your NGINX product and base distribution, record its digest, rebuild dependent images, redeploy, and retain the previous digest for rollback.

Is NGINX Plus still receiving security updates? Only the two most recent Plus releases receive critical patches and security updates. Check your release’s end-of-security-update date and upgrade if it has passed.
