Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe strongest NGINX RCE defense is a sequence, not a single directive: patch the exact installed build, remove risky directive combinations and unused modules, disable unneeded njs imports, restrict administrative entry points, run workers with least privilege, and test the complete configuration before every reload. Version and configuration exposure must be assessed together; a current package can still be dangerous when an affected feature combination is enabled.
What actually reduces NGINX RCE risk?
Start with the version, then inspect how the server is configured. NGINX advisories describe several risks that require particular combinations of directives or modules rather than a universally unsafe default. The practical goal is to reduce the amount of code that can process attacker-controlled input and to limit what a compromised worker could read, write, execute, or reach on the network.

- Patch first: compare the exact NGINX Open Source or NGINX Plus build with current advisory fixed versions.
- Remove exposure triggers: audit
aliaswith rewrite processing, regex captures, HTTP/2, HTTP/3, gRPC proxying, oversized header buffers, and regexmapcaptures. - Minimize executable code: remove unused modules and third-party modules; do not configure njs
js_importunless trusted JavaScript is required. - Protect entry points: use TLS, upstream TLS where appropriate, authentication, IP restrictions, and identity or token controls.
- Contain compromise: protect configuration, modules, certificates, scripts, logs, and core files while running workers with the least privilege practical.
- Verify continuously: render the production configuration, run
nginx -t, stage reloads, monitor worker behavior, and repeat the review after every package or module change.
No authoritative source establishes one percentage for how much these measures reduce RCE risk. The defensible way to measure exposure is CVE-specific affected and fixed versions plus the features enabled in your deployment.

nginx -V 2>&1
nginx -T
nginx -t
nginx -V shows the version, configure arguments, and commonly compiled modules. nginx -T prints the fully expanded configuration, including included files; review that output rather than a single fragment. nginx -t checks syntax and attempts to open referenced files, but a successful test does not prove that a directive combination is safe.
Also record whether HTTP/3, HTTP/2, gRPC proxying, njs, SSI, DAV, slice, charset conversion, AIO, and rewrite processing are active. List dynamic modules installed by your package and identify any third-party module, its maintainer, provenance, and update source.
Compare with the current advisory ranges
Advisory ranges change, so re-check the official NGINX security advisories whenever you patch or publish a baseline. The ranges currently identified for 2026 issues are:
Recommended Free Tools
| Issue | Fixed in NGINX Open Source | Exposure described |
|---|---|---|
| CVE-2026-15176 | 1.31.7 and later; 1.30.6 and later | alias, rewrite processing, and $request_filename under stated conditions |
| CVE-2026-95101 | 1.31.7 and later; 1.30.6 and later | Feature-specific issue listed in the current advisory |
| CVE-2026-97629 | 1.31.7 and later; 1.30.6 and later | Feature-specific issue listed in the current advisory |
| CVE-2026-97205 | 1.31.7 and later; 1.30.6 and later | Feature-specific issue listed in the current advisory |
| CVE-2026-90439 | 1.31.6 and later; 1.30.5 and later | Feature-specific issue listed in the current advisory |
Do not infer safety merely from a branch number. The advisory must be checked against the exact edition, package backport status, enabled module set, and affected feature. A vendor package can contain a fix without changing the upstream-looking version string, so retain the package release identifier as well.
Prefer a maintained security line
For organizations that need predictable maintenance, an LTS track can reduce patch-latency risk. NGINX Plus documentation describes LTS as a security-focused line that receives security fixes and CVE mitigations without feature changes, with support for up to three years. That support window does not remove the need to apply updates promptly.

2. Remove directive combinations associated with code execution
Audit alias, rewrite, and $request_filename together
Search every location block for an alias that is combined with rewrite processing and a set or return directive referencing $request_filename. This combination is the condition described for CVE-2026-15176 and can permit code execution under the advisory’s stated circumstances.
Prefer a simple, static mapping when a location only serves files. If rewriting is needed, separate the rewritten application route from the aliased file route and remove unnecessary set or return logic that consumes $request_filename. After each change, test requests for traversal, encoded separators, nonexistent files, and unexpected extensions in a staging environment.
Review rewrite and regex captures
Inspect every rewrite, if, and set sequence that uses unnamed PCRE captures such as $1 or $2. NGINX release notes identify a rewrite-module heap overflow with potential arbitrary code execution when capture handling and replacement processing interact. Use named captures where they make the data flow clear, keep rules short, and avoid chains in which a later rule silently overwrites a capture used by an earlier replacement.
Check HTTP/2 and gRPC proxy settings
If HTTP/2 or gRPC is enabled, review proxy_http_version, grpc_pass, ignore_invalid_headers, and large_client_header_buffers as a group. The release notes identify unsafe combinations involving acceptance of invalid headers and very large buffers. Do not increase header buffers simply to make malformed or unusually large requests pass. Set the smallest values that meet the documented requirements of your clients, reject invalid input where compatibility permits, and test both HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2 request paths.
Keep HTTP/3 only when it is required
HTTP/3 has its own implementation and advisory history. Track the HTTP/3 fixes in your current release line and remove HTTP/3 listeners when the application has no business need for them. Eliminating an unused protocol removes an input parser and simplifies emergency patching; it is not a substitute for updating a build that still serves HTTP/1.1 or HTTP/2.

Inspect regex map captures
Review map directives that use regular expressions and capture variables. NGINX release notes identify heap-overflow conditions involving regex map captures and the order in which captured values are consumed. Keep expressions narrowly scoped, avoid relying on captures after unrelated regex processing, and add tests for long, malformed, and adversarial input.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Disable specialized modules you do not use
SSI, DAV, slice, charset conversion, AIO, and other specialized modules expand the parser and execution surface. Remove them from the build or package when the service does not need them. When a module is required, map its directives to the current advisory list and include module-specific tests in every upgrade.
3. Minimize executable and dynamic code
Remove unnecessary modules
Install or build only the modules required by the application. Treat third-party and dynamic modules as privileged code: verify provenance, track a maintainer and version, restrict who can replace the module file, and include it in patch reviews. A module loaded by the master process can affect every virtual host, so a single unmaintained extension defeats otherwise careful server-block settings.
Use njs only deliberately
njs executes JavaScript only when configuration uses js_import. The official guidance states that this directive is the way njs evaluates imported code and that, when no js_import directives are present in nginx.conf, NGINX is safe from JavaScript-related vulnerabilities. Remove unused imports and references, and keep required scripts in an administrator-controlled directory.
# Find njs imports in the rendered configuration
nginx -T 2>/dev/null | grep -nE '(^|[[:space:]])js_import([[:space:]]|;)'
Do not copy JavaScript into a configuration merely to avoid changing an upstream application. If njs is necessary, review each imported file as code, pin its deployment source, test failure behavior, and prevent the service account from writing to it.

4. Restrict network reachability and identity
Expose only required listeners
Bind listeners and server names to the traffic the service must receive. Keep status, administrative, debug, and internal health locations on a management network or behind an authenticated gateway. Remove default virtual hosts and unused listening ports so an attacker cannot reach an interface that was forgotten during deployment.
Use TLS at both relevant boundaries
Terminate client TLS with a currently supported configuration. Use TLS to upstream servers whenever traffic crosses a trust boundary, a shared network, or an untrusted host. Validate upstream certificates and names rather than treating encryption alone as authentication. Keep private keys readable by the NGINX service only as necessary and writable only by administrators or deployment automation.
Require identity for sensitive locations
Combine IP restrictions with authentication for administration and sensitive application paths. NGINX supports HTTP Basic Authentication, IP access control, subrequest authentication, JWT, and OpenID Connect controls. A representative location is:
location /admin/ {
allow 10.20.0.0/16;
deny all;
auth_basic "Restricted area";
auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/secure/.htpasswd;
}
Replace the example network with the actual management range, protect the password file, and do not expose an administrative endpoint solely because it is protected by an obscure URL.
Prevent proxy pivots
Keep proxy destinations explicit. Do not construct proxy_pass targets from user-controlled URLs, and avoid broad resolver access that could let an attacker turn NGINX into a server-side request-forgery pivot into internal services. Define approved upstreams, restrict outbound egress at the host or network layer, and log destination changes.
Best Value
5. Enforce process and filesystem boundaries
Run workers with least privilege
Use a dedicated service account for worker processes and keep the master or control process separate from application data and deployment credentials. The worker should not be able to modify its own configuration, replace modules, read unrelated private keys, or write executable files. Container or service sandboxing, mandatory access controls, and restricted outbound egress add containment if a worker is compromised.
Protect the files that control execution
Apply ownership and permissions to configuration, dynamic modules, njs scripts, certificates, caches, temporary directories, and log destinations. A typical review includes:
namei -l /etc/nginx/nginx.conf
find /etc/nginx /usr/lib/nginx -xdev -type f -perm /022 -ls
Correct any configuration, module, or script that is writable by the service account or by an untrusted group. Make deployment automation the only writer where possible, and use atomic replacement plus rollback rather than editing files in place on a live host.
Treat diagnostics as sensitive data
Debug logs and core files can contain unsanitized requests, server configuration, and private key material. Restrict their directory permissions, limit retention, encrypt backups, and disable debug output outside controlled troubleshooting. Configure core-dump handling so a crash cannot silently place sensitive memory in a world-readable location.
6. Validate every change and reload safely
Test the rendered production configuration
- Render the exact production configuration with
nginx -T, including all includes and dynamic modules. - Run
nginx -tas the same account and with the same paths used by the service manager. - Check that certificates, key files, password databases, njs scripts, upstream names, and log directories are readable or writable only where intended.
- Exercise affected routes in staging, including malformed headers, long headers, rewrite edge cases, encoded paths, HTTP/2, HTTP/3, and gRPC if enabled.
- Perform a staged reload, retain the known-good package and configuration, and verify that old workers exit normally.
Monitor for exploitation indicators
Alert on repeated worker exits, crash loops, unexpected child processes, sudden configuration or module changes, unusual outbound connections, and requests that trigger parser or rewrite errors. Correlate error logs with load-balancer and host telemetry; a single clean reload does not prove that an input-handling flaw is absent.
Recheck after every dependency change
Repeat the inventory after updates to NGINX, OpenSSL, PCRE, njs, dynamic modules, or the operating system. Record the advisory review, tests performed, and rollback point. NGINX security policy places responsibility on operators to review configurations regularly and apply security updates; configuration drift is therefore a maintenance problem, not a one-time hardening task.
Choosing a practical hardening level
| Control area | Minimum acceptable baseline | Higher-assurance deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Patch latency | Inventory every release and apply fixed versions before public exposure. | Automated advisory monitoring, staged rollout, and tested rollback for each package line. |
| Module surface | Remove unused and third-party modules; omit unused njs imports. | Minimal custom build, signed or provenance-checked modules, and write-protected deployment paths. |
| Management access | Private network plus authentication for admin and status locations. | Separate management plane, IP allowlists, strong identity provider controls, and restricted egress. |
| Process and files | Dedicated worker account and protected keys, scripts, and configuration. | Container or service sandbox, mandatory access controls, read-only application paths, and isolated secrets. |
| Protocols | Disable unused HTTP/3, gRPC, and specialized modules. | Feature-specific regression tests and telemetry for every enabled protocol. |
| Operations | nginx -t before reload and known-good rollback. |
Rendered-config testing in CI, canary reloads, crash and egress alerts, and documented incident response. |
If you suspect an NGINX compromise
- Remove the affected listener from public traffic or isolate the host while preserving logs and volatile evidence.
- Do not overwrite the suspected configuration, module, njs script, core file, or package before collecting hashes and timestamps.
- Compare the running binary and package with the current advisory fixed versions and identify every enabled feature combination.
- Rotate credentials and private keys that the worker could read, including upstream credentials and deployment tokens.
- Rebuild or reinstall from a trusted package source, restore a reviewed configuration, and verify module provenance.
- Review outbound connections, child processes, file changes, and neighboring hosts for lateral movement before returning the listener to service.
Hardening works best as a repeatable control loop: patch, reduce feature exposure, restrict identity and privileges, test the complete rendered configuration, and monitor what the worker actually does.
