There is no universal timeout value that fixes an NGINX RTMP stream dropping after a few hours. First identify which connection fails: encoder to NGINX, NGINX’s push to YouTube, or YouTube’s ingest session. Match timestamped logs from both ends with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, then change only the setting relevant to the failing connection.
First identify which part of the stream is disconnecting
A stream may travel directly from an encoder to YouTube, or through NGINX as a relay. In a relayed setup, there are two connections to investigate: encoder-to-NGINX and NGINX-to-YouTube. A failure on one does not prove that the other failed.

- Map the path. Record whether your encoder publishes directly to YouTube or to an NGINX RTMP application that pushes onward. Note the NGINX and nginx-rtmp-module versions, the relevant application and push configuration, and the destination service. Do not share a stream key in logs, screenshots, or configuration examples.
- Record the failure time. Use a consistent time zone and note when the stream stopped, whether it resumed, and what viewers saw.
- Compare evidence at that time. Check the encoder log, NGINX RTMP error log, host or service logs, and YouTube Live Control Room stream-health messages. Look for which connection reports a close, timeout, failed publish, or loss of input first.
- Identify the failing leg before changing settings. If the encoder continues publishing to NGINX while YouTube loses the feed, investigate the relay’s outgoing push. If the encoder loses its connection to NGINX, investigate the source side. If the encoder publishes directly to YouTube, inspect the encoder-to-YouTube connection and YouTube’s health information.
These are diagnostic inferences, not a root-cause finding: the symptom alone cannot establish why a particular stream dropped.

Verify push reconnection for your installed module
Check whether the installed nginx-rtmp-module version supports the push-reconnect directive you intend to use, and whether it is placed in the correct RTMP application context. The module’s directive reference describes its configuration, and the issue discussion titled “Push reconnect on connection drop” illustrates that behavior is configuration- and implementation-specific. Neither is a universal recipe for every build or topology. Validate against the version actually installed rather than copying an arbitrary directive or timeout value.

Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Official NGINX RTMP documentation describes the RTMP module and its configuration context: F5 NGINX RTMP documentation. Consult the nginx-rtmp-module directive reference and, where relevant, the push-reconnect issue discussion; verify that the documented behavior applies to your installed implementation.
Do not use an HTTP keep-alive timeout as an RTMP fix
NGINX’s keepalive_timeout belongs to the HTTP module and controls how long an HTTP client keep-alive connection remains open. It does not reconnect an RTMP publishing session. NGINX documents that directive in its HTTP core module reference.

TCP keepalive probes configured through NGINX’s stream module are also a different mechanism: they are socket-level checks, not RTMP ping handling or relay-push reconnection. See the stream core module reference. Select a mechanism based on the leg that failed and the behavior supported by your installed module; do not expect an HTTP timeout or TCP probe to reconnect a YouTube push.

If the encoder is the failing side—or as a validation step for any setup—compare its output with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS for Live and says to monitor stream health. Its settings guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, which should not exceed four seconds, and lists constant bitrate (CBR). These are recommendations to check, not proof that a disconnect is caused by encoding settings or a guarantee that changing them will stop one.

- Protocol: Use RTMPS where your encoder and configuration support it. YouTube describes it as a secure extension to RTMP in its RTMPS guidance.
- Bitrate mode: Check that the encoder uses CBR, as recommended in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval if supported, and do not exceed four seconds, following that same guidance.
- Test content: YouTube advises testing with representative audio and motion, then monitoring stream health. A test that does not resemble the real workload may miss problems that occur during the actual broadcast.
YouTube’s two-second recommended keyframe frequency and four-second maximum are current guidance accessed in 2026; they are recommendations, not statistics from a study of multi-hour disconnects.
Change one thing at a time and verify the result
- Save the current configuration and preserve the relevant logs before editing.
- Write down the stream start time, disconnect time, first failing leg, associated YouTube health message, and the exact configuration change.
- Change only the setting tied to the suspected failure—for example, a supported relay push-reconnect setting for an NGINX-to-YouTube failure, rather than an unrelated HTTP timeout.
- Run an extended stream using representative audio and motion. Keep monitoring the encoder, NGINX, host or service, and YouTube stream health.
- Compare the new logs and outcome with the baseline. If the failure remains, revert or reassess and investigate the next plausible cause rather than stacking unverified changes.
A setting should not be called a fix until the actual deployment has been observed to stay connected under the relevant conditions.

Common mistakes and what to do instead
- Changing
keepalive_timeoutafter an RTMP drop: That is an HTTP client keep-alive control. Trace the RTMP publishing leg and use a supported mechanism for that connection. - Adding TCP keepalive and expecting a reconnect: Socket probes, RTMP ping or timeout behavior, and relay reconnection are distinct. Confirm which connection failed and what the installed implementation supports.
- Copying a directive from another NGINX build: Module versions and configuration contexts matter. Check the installed version and directive reference before changing the RTMP application.
- Changing encoder settings without checking logs: Validate YouTube’s protocol, CBR, and keyframe recommendations, but do not treat them as an established cause of a multi-hour failure.
- Posting an unredacted configuration: Remove stream keys and other credentials before sharing logs or asking for help.
When to consider a different streaming setup
If the evidence points to a relay-hosting limitation, assess sustained upload capacity, network stability, CPU and memory headroom for the actual workload, the network route to the selected YouTube ingest, observability, and recovery behavior. A hosting purchase is not a diagnosis: the disconnect symptom by itself does not establish resource exhaustion or identify a provider as the remedy.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want to keep uploaded videos live on YouTube without maintaining an encoder and relay at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos and playlists on YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
