If Nginx is not reachable on port 80 or 443, first determine whether it is listening on the intended IP address and port. Then check whether the request reaches the right server block, whether HTTPS has a valid SSL configuration, and—only after those local checks—whether a firewall or network rule blocks remote traffic. A response from Nginx does not necessarily mean it selected the site you intended.
Start by identifying what is failing
Note the exact URL, including whether it begins with http:// or https://, the hostname, and the IP address the deployment is expected to use. HTTP normally uses port 80 and HTTPS port 443 in Nginx’s documented examples, but a hostname and a direct-IP request may reach different server blocks.

Use the symptom to choose where to look first:
| What you observe | Inspect first |
|---|---|
| No Nginx response on the expected endpoint | The active Nginx process, effective configuration, and listen address and port. |
| Nginx responds, but the wrong site’s content appears | The request’s Host header, server_name, and default server for that address-and-port pair. |
| HTTP works but HTTPS fails or shows the wrong certificate | The SSL-enabled listener, certificate and key, TLS configuration, and SNI behavior. |
| Local requests work but remote clients cannot connect | Host firewall, cloud network policy, DNS, NAT, or provider network settings. |
Check that Nginx listens on the expected address and port
The listen directive determines the address and port a server block accepts requests on. Check the active configuration—not just a file you expect to be included—and make sure the relevant server block listens on the IP address clients actually reach.

A listener bound to one specific IP address may not accept connections arriving on a different interface. Confirm the configured address matches the intended destination; a port number alone does not establish that Nginx is listening on every address.
Distinguish a listener problem from a server-block mismatch
When a request arrives, Nginx first matches the connection to listeners for its destination address and port. It then uses the request’s Host header and the configured server_name values to choose a server block. If no name matches, the default server for that address-and-port pair handles the request. The first server for the pair is the default unless one is explicitly marked default_server. See How Nginx processes a request and the listen directive.

If Nginx serves a page but it is the wrong site, check the hostname in the URL against the intended block’s server_name. Test with that hostname, since requesting an IP address can send a different Host value. The name _ is not a special catch-all: default behavior is controlled by the listener configuration, not by that name.
Check HTTPS configuration separately
A working port 80 listener does not configure HTTPS automatically. For the documented HTTPS setup, the server block needs an SSL-enabled listener such as listen 443 ssl, plus ssl_certificate and ssl_certificate_key pointing to the appropriate files. Nginx’s guide covers configuring HTTPS servers.

If Nginx will not start or reload
Check Nginx’s error output for certificate and key errors. The private key must be readable by Nginx’s master process and should have access restricted because it is secret. Verify that the key matches the server certificate. If the certificate file contains a chain, Nginx documents the order as the primary certificate first, followed by intermediate certificates; a mismatch or incorrectly ordered bundle can trigger a key-values-mismatch error. See the Nginx certificate-chain guidance.
If HTTPS presents the wrong site’s certificate
For multiple HTTPS server names on one IP, certificate selection can depend on SNI (Server Name Indication). TLS negotiation happens before the browser sends its HTTP request, so Nginx cannot wait for the HTTP Host header to choose the certificate. A client can supply the requested server name during the handshake through SNI; otherwise, the default server’s certificate may be presented. Check which server is the default for that address and port and verify the exact hostname’s certificate behavior. Nginx explains this timing in its HTTPS server documentation.

Confirm the installed Nginx build supports SSL
The Nginx HTTP SSL module is not built by default. The documented build option is --with-http_ssl_module, and OpenSSL is required. If HTTPS configuration fails despite apparently correct file paths, establish that the installed binary includes the module. The HTTP SSL module documentation describes the build requirement.
Syntax also depends on Nginx version. The standalone ssl directive became obsolete in 1.15.0 and was removed in 1.25.1; for current configurations, use the ssl parameter on listen, such as listen 443 ssl. Check the syntax against the version installed on your server.

Investigate network controls if local Nginx checks pass
If Nginx listens on the intended address and port and a request to the server locally behaves as expected, but a remote client cannot connect, move outward from Nginx. Depending on the deployment, check:
- Host firewall rules for inbound TCP traffic on ports 80 and 443.
- Cloud firewall or security-group rules, if the server is hosted in a cloud environment.
- Router or NAT forwarding, if the server sits behind a gateway.
- DNS records and whether the hostname resolves to the intended public address.
- Provider-level network restrictions or settings.
These controls vary by operating system, cloud provider, and network design. A working local listener does not prove that public traffic can reach it, and the right commands or settings depend on the specific deployment.
