NFL teams designate game-day inactives about 90 minutes before the scheduled kickoff. Check the NFL Inactives page or NFL.com’s game-week report for the matchup. If the page is empty earlier, that does not mean there are no inactives; reports may not have been posted yet.
When do NFL teams announce inactives?
The expected window is about 90 minutes before the game’s scheduled start, rather than a fixed number of minutes before the opening kickoff. NFL Support describes the designation timing as about 90 minutes before the scheduled game. NFL Football Operations also documents a 90-minute pregame officiating meeting where a club delivers its Game Day Administration Report, including the inactive list: NFL Football Operations: Game Day Administration.

Because the report is game-specific and close to kickoff, an injury update from earlier in the week does not settle whether a player will be active on game day.

- Open the NFL Inactives page. Go to nfl.com/inactives. Before reports are available, the page may show “Please check back soon.” An empty page is not confirmation that no players are inactive.
- Look for the game-week report. NFL.com publishes inactive-report articles that organize players by matchup and team; for example, see its 2026 Week 1 inactive report.
- Check again near the 90-minute window. If the list has not appeared, return closer to scheduled kickoff. Teams may also post through their official channels, but posting times and formats are not established as uniform across all teams.
How the inactive list differs from injury designations
Weekly injury labels and the game-day inactive report answer different questions. Questionable and Doubtful indicate uncertainty or likelihood, while the inactive list gives the team’s game-day designation. A historical NFL.com explanation describes Questionable as uncertain whether the player will play, Doubtful as unlikely to participate, and Out as not playing: NFL injury report explained. That older explainer clarifies the distinction but should not be treated as a complete guide to every current injury-report rule.

What the list tells you—and what it does not
- It identifies players designated inactive for that game.
- It is not a full starting-lineup announcement.
- A player being active does not guarantee that the player will see playing time.
- An earlier injury designation is not a substitute for checking the final game-day report.
