Neynar acquired Farcaster—not Balaji’s Network School; what the “social smart contract” means

No—Balaji Srinivasan’s Network School did not acquire Farcaster, and Farcaster has not been shown to launch a new social smart contract. Neynar announced on January 21, 2026 that it acquired Farcaster from Merkle. Balaji’s “social smart contract” is a separate governance idea associated with the Network State and Network School.

Who owns Farcaster now?

Neynar is the new operator and owner of Farcaster following its acquisition from Merkle. In its January 21, 2026 announcement, Neynar said: “Neynar will maintain Farcaster protocol, run the Farcaster client and operate Clanker.” Parts of the Clanker team joined Neynar as part of the transaction.

Contemporaneous reporting by The Block said the transfer covered Farcaster’s protocol contracts, code repositories, the Farcaster app and Clanker. Farcaster co-founders Dan Romero and Varun Srinivasan stepped back from day-to-day work.

The deal was not described as a Network School transaction. Balaji Srinivasan’s Network School remains a separate project built around his network-state theory.

Is Farcaster shutting down?

No. The Block quoted Romero saying: “Farcaster is not shutting down. The protocol works and will continue to work.” Neynar’s operating statement also points to continuity: it plans to maintain the protocol, run the client and operate Clanker rather than discontinue them.

Romero reportedly said Farcaster had about 250,000 monthly active users in December and more than 100,000 funded wallets. These are Romero’s figures as reported by The Block, not independently audited metrics. The same report said Merkle had raised $180 million and planned to return that money to investors; that figure describes Merkle’s financing and investor plans, not a stated purchase price for Farcaster.

What Neynar says it will change

Neynar presented the takeover as a new leadership and product approach after roughly five years under the original team. Its stated focus is a builder-first ecosystem that helps developers move from ideas toward recurring revenue.

What is confirmed

  • Neynar acquired Farcaster from Merkle.
  • Neynar will maintain the Farcaster protocol.
  • Neynar will run the Farcaster client.
  • Neynar will operate Clanker.
  • Farcaster’s protocol contracts, repositories, app and Clanker were included in the transfer, according to The Block.

What is not yet specified

The announcement does not establish a new user-facing governance contract, a migration requirement, a token change or a specific redesign of Farcaster’s clients. Those would require separate product or protocol documentation.

What Balaji’s “social smart contract” means

In Balaji’s Network State framework, a network state combines a social network with a recognized founder, collective capacity, an integrated cryptocurrency and consensual government constrained by a social smart contract. The contract is a proposed set of rules for an opt-in digital and physical community—not merely a piece of code added to an existing social app.

The concept is governance-oriented. Participants would agree to rules for membership, decision-making and coordination, with cryptographic mechanisms or voting used to record participation. “Exit” is central to the idea: people who no longer accept the rules should have a defined way to leave rather than being trapped in the community.

An interview transcript records Balaji summarizing his view this way: “So the answer in my view is the social smart contract and exit.” The statement describes his proposed network-state model, not a Farcaster feature announcement.

Why blockchain governance is sometimes mentioned

A later Unchained discussion placed the phrase in Balaji’s broader blockchain-governance arguments, including a proposal that a chain could rewind after a cryptographic break under a social smart contract. That is a hypothetical governance response to a severe blockchain failure. It does not document a Farcaster contract, a Farcaster vote or a new rule for Farcaster users.

Farcaster’s takeover and the Network School idea are different stories

Question Farcaster transaction Network State/social smart contract

What the deal means for current users and developers

For Farcaster users

The available statements support continued access rather than a shutdown. They do not announce a mandatory account migration or a new social contract that users must accept. Users should distinguish confirmed continuity from future product decisions that Neynar may announce separately.

For developers

Neynar’s builder-first positioning signals an emphasis on infrastructure and monetization support, but the announcement does not promise a particular API, fee schedule, revenue share or recurring-revenue program. Developers should rely on Neynar’s current technical documentation and release notices for implementation details.

Where to read the underlying theory

The most direct background source for Balaji’s terminology is The Network State, including its 2022 Kindle edition. It explains the proposed network-state structure and the role of a social smart contract. Reading that framework helps clarify why the phrase refers to governance and membership rules rather than a newly shipped Farcaster setting.

How to interpret future announcements

  1. Check whether the announcement comes from Neynar or Farcaster when it concerns ownership, protocol operation or the client.
  2. Look for a technical specification before treating “social smart contract” as a software feature.
  3. Separate community-governance proposals from changes to accounts, wallets, clients or protocol contracts.
  4. Check dates and measurements: user counts and wallet figures can change and may be reported estimates rather than audited totals.
