Capacity depends on how many people are in calls at the same time, whether media is processed by the main Nextcloud server or a High Performance Backend (HPB), the number of simultaneous calls, video and screen-sharing quality, and available network bandwidth.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
For planning, Nextcloud’s published HPB baseline is 8 GB RAM, 32 GB of free disk space, and four AES-capable Intel i7/Xeon cores. Nextcloud estimates that this minimum HPB profile can support about 150 concurrent users, but that figure applies to the documented profile and is not a guarantee for every resolution, codec, recording workload, or network topology.

What determines Nextcloud Talk capacity?
The number of accounts in your Nextcloud installation is a poor sizing metric for Talk. A server may host thousands of registered users while carrying little call traffic, or a much smaller organization may overload it by running several meetings at once. The important number is concurrent active participants: people sending or receiving audio, video, screen sharing, or chat at the same time.
Every active participant creates application, signaling, encryption, and network work. Audio-only calls consume less media processing than video calls, while screen sharing, high resolutions, recordings, and transcription add further CPU, storage, and bandwidth demands. Count simultaneous calls as well as the largest single meeting; ten separate two-person calls can stress a different part of the system than one twenty-person meeting.

The main Nextcloud server
Without HPB, the primary Nextcloud server runs the web application, authentication, file and database services, Talk signaling, and the call workload itself. This is practical for small installations and occasional one-to-one calls when the server has adequate resources and a reliable network connection. As concurrent participation rises, the application and media workloads compete with file operations, background jobs, and database queries.
Media topology matters
HPB changes where call processing occurs. Its selective forwarding unit receives media streams and forwards the appropriate streams to participants, reducing the upload burden on individual clients and moving substantial call processing away from the main Nextcloud instance. That makes larger meetings and webinars possible without forcing the application server to carry every media path directly.

Codec, resolution, screen sharing, packet overhead, simultaneous calls, and whether traffic is relayed through TURN all change the requirement. Measure your expected workload and leave headroom instead of multiplying an assumed per-user figure.

| Resource | Published figure | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | Minimum RAM listed for the HPB profile. |
| Storage | 32 GB free disk | Free space required by the published HPB baseline; it is not a recording-capacity promise. |
| Processor | Four AES-capable i7/Xeon cores | Four hardware cores with AES support, as specified by Nextcloud. |
| Capacity estimate | About 150 concurrent users | Nextcloud’s estimate for that minimum profile, not a universal limit for every call design. |
The “about 150 concurrent users” estimate must stay attached to the exact baseline above. It should not be generalized to 150 people at any arbitrary resolution, codec, recording mode, or topology. A workload with several high-resolution meetings can require more CPU, memory, network capacity, or media instances than a mostly audio workload with the same participant count.
Prerequisites on the Nextcloud application server
Talk calls rely on browser WebRTC and on the same web, database, and PHP stack that serves Nextcloud. A correctly sized HPB cannot compensate for an unsupported or poorly configured application server.
Recommended Free Tools
- HTTPS: Serve Talk over HTTPS. Browser WebRTC requires a secure origin for normal camera, microphone, and screen-sharing operation.
- Supported database: Use MySQL or MariaDB with
utf8mb4support for a serious deployment. SQLite is not recommended for Talk calls because concurrent signaling and chat activity can expose its locking and concurrency limits. - Supported webserver and PHP combination: Apache or Nginx must be paired with a supported PHP-FPM/MPM configuration. Long polling is needed for responsive chat and signaling; proxy, timeout, and process settings must allow those connections to remain open.
- Current browsers: Use a current Firefox or Chrome/Chromium release for the full video-call and screen-sharing experience.
Shared hosting is risky for Talk. Providers may limit long-running connections, restrict chat-server software, or place several customers on the same constrained resources. A dedicated server or a decent virtual server gives you control over PHP, webserver behavior, firewall rules, and the network ports that WebRTC needs.
Do you need the High Performance Backend?
Small one-to-one use
HPB is optional for very small calls. If your deployment mostly handles one-to-one conversations and only occasional small meetings, the integrated Talk services on the main Nextcloud server may be sufficient, provided the application server and network are healthy.

Three participants and beyond
Nextcloud’s quick-install documentation notes that HPB is already helpful in calls with three participants. This is a practical tipping point rather than a hard technical limit: a three-person call can work without HPB, but forwarding media through a dedicated service can reduce the load on the application server and improve consistency as more participants join.
Larger meetings and webinars
HPB becomes increasingly important for larger meetings, recurring group calls, and webinars. Nextcloud describes it as a way to solve the bandwidth bottleneck and scale a single call to much larger participant counts, including workloads reaching hundreds or thousands of attendees when the surrounding infrastructure is sized accordingly.
HPB does not eliminate resource planning. The HPB host still needs enough CPU, memory, disk, and network capacity for your actual concurrency. The main Nextcloud server continues to handle authentication, application requests, storage, and signaling, so it also needs headroom. Recording and transcription can add separate processing and storage pressure.
TURN: why a relay is usually necessary
In almost all real-world deployments, plan for a TURN server. Users may connect from symmetric NAT, corporate firewalls, hotel Wi-Fi, mobile networks, or other restricted environments that prevent a direct WebRTC path. TURN relays the media when direct connectivity fails.

Ports and firewall rules
Make TURN reachable on port 443 whenever possible; port 80 can be used in environments where that is the available option. A relay on a commonly permitted web port gives restricted clients a better chance of connecting than an uncommon high port.
HPB normally uses a WebRTC media range of 20,000–40,000. Firewalls must permit the traffic required by your deployment. If a client can reach only port 443, TURN relays that traffic to the HPB media range. Test from outside your office network rather than assuming that a call that works on local Wi-Fi will work for remote participants.

HPB and TURN can run on separate services or hosts. If they share one machine, plan the bindings before installation: both may need port 443, so you may need separate IP addresses or distinct listener assignments. A port collision can leave one service apparently running while clients cannot establish calls.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing a deployment layout
| Layout | Media and application placement | When it fits | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single Nextcloud server | Application, database, signaling, and Talk services share one host. | Small installations, mostly one-to-one calls, and modest concurrency. | Simplest operation, but call load competes directly with files, database work, and other Nextcloud jobs. |
| Separate HPB host | The main server handles Nextcloud; HPB handles selective media forwarding. | Regular group calls, larger meetings, webinars, or a busy application server. | More components, firewall rules, monitoring, and bandwidth planning. |
| Hosted HPB service | A provider operates the HPB while your Nextcloud remains under your control. | Organizations that want managed media infrastructure instead of operating another host. | Reliance on the provider’s availability, network path, support terms, and configuration limits. |
Compare these layouts against the same workload questions: expected concurrent participants, simultaneous calls, video resolution, screen sharing, recording or transcription, upstream and downstream bandwidth, TURN requirements, firewall and NAT conditions, database and webserver support, operational skills, and whether media services should be isolated from the storage and application server.

A practical sizing process
- Record your concurrency target. Estimate the busiest normal period and the largest meeting separately. Include audio-only participants, because they still create signaling and media work.
- Describe the call profile. Note how often video, screen sharing, recording, or transcription is used. A participant count without a media profile is not enough to size hardware.
- Choose the media topology. Keep very small calls on the integrated service if appropriate; plan HPB when three-person calls are common or when larger meetings are central to the service.
- Start with the published HPB baseline. Use 8 GB RAM, 32 GB free disk, and four AES-capable i7/Xeon cores as a starting point, then add headroom for your workload rather than treating the estimate as a guarantee.
- Plan network paths before deployment. Map the public addresses, HTTPS endpoint, TURN listener, HPB media range of 20,000–40,000, and any firewall or NAT restrictions. Confirm whether HPB and TURN require separate IP bindings.
- Validate the application stack. Confirm HTTPS, a supported MySQL or MariaDB database with
utf8mb4, and a supported Apache or Nginx plus PHP-FPM/MPM combination that permits long polling. - Test from restrictive networks. Place test participants on mobile data, a corporate network, and an external residential connection. Verify camera, microphone, screen sharing, chat delivery, and reconnect behavior.
- Measure during peak use. Watch CPU, memory, disk space, database activity, network throughput, and failed or delayed connections while reproducing your largest realistic meetings. Increase resources or move media to HPB when the application host is competing with calls.
Common failure symptoms and fixes
Calls work locally but fail for remote users
This pattern points to NAT or firewall traversal. Check that TURN is configured and reachable on port 443 (or 80 where required), then test from a network outside your normal perimeter. If HPB is in use, verify that TURN can relay to the HPB media range.
HPB appears online but media does not flow
Check firewall access to ports 20,000–40,000 and confirm that the HPB and TURN bindings do not conflict. A service listening on the wrong interface or an unopened media range can leave signaling functional while audio and video fail.
Chat is delayed or participants disconnect
Review the webserver and PHP-FPM/MPM configuration for long-polling support and appropriate connection timeouts. Also check database contention. SQLite is unsuitable for a serious Talk workload; use MySQL or MariaDB with utf8mb4.
The Nextcloud host is overloaded during meetings
Separate application and media pressure in your monitoring. If CPU or network usage rises with every participant while file and database operations also slow, deploy HPB and size its network path independently. Keep capacity for ordinary Nextcloud tasks instead of allocating every available resource to calls.
Screen sharing is unavailable
Confirm HTTPS and ask participants to use a current Firefox or Chrome/Chromium browser. Browser permissions, enterprise policies, and outdated releases can limit screen sharing even when the server is healthy.
Bottom-line decision rule
For a small, lightly used installation, a properly configured dedicated or virtual Nextcloud server may handle Talk without HPB. Once three-person calls become routine, or when meetings, webinars, recording, and screen sharing are important, HPB is the safer architecture. Begin with Nextcloud’s 8 GB RAM, 32 GB free disk, and four AES-capable i7/Xeon-core baseline, then validate it against your real concurrency and media profile. Treat TURN on port 443 and the HPB media range of 20,000–40,000 as part of the design, not as optional troubleshooting extras.
