Short answer: the 2027–2028 Red Dead window is an analyst scenario from Citi, not a release forecast or announcement from Rockstar. Citi reportedly said a Red Dead title arriving in those years “may not be unreasonable,” using Take-Two’s development-cost accounting and comments about Grand Theft Auto VI as indirect clues. No successor has a confirmed date, platform plan, trailer or publicly identified production window.
What Citi actually said about a 2027 or 2028 Red Dead
Stocktwits reported on October 15, 2026 that Citi considered a Red Dead title releasing in 2027 or 2028 “may not be unreasonable.” The wording matters: it describes a possibility, not a prediction that Rockstar has adopted. Citi’s original research note was not directly available in the reported material; the quotation was reproduced by Stocktwits.

The report does not identify the game as Red Dead Redemption 3. “A Red Dead title” could refer to any future entry or project in the franchise. It also does not provide a development codename, announcement date, trailer, platforms or launch schedule.

Citi pointed to Take-Two’s company-wide accounting as a data point. At the company’s second quarter, Take-Two reported $2.4 billion in capitalized software and development costs. Capitalized costs represent development spending recorded on the company’s books; the total covers its portfolio and does not identify a Red Dead project.

The same report cited Jennifer Kolbe, Rockstar’s head of publishing, dismissing speculation that Grand Theft Auto VI cost more than $1.5 billion. Citi appears to have used that comment, together with the capitalized-cost figure, to reason that Take-Two may have multiple large-scale projects moving through its pipeline. Neither fact confirms that a Red Dead game exists or is close to release.
What is confirmed about Rockstar’s immediate schedule
The immediate timing context is Grand Theft Auto VI. The reported schedule places its launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Citi’s scenario is therefore a post-GTA VI possibility, not a date that has been attached to a Red Dead announcement.

Red Dead Redemption 2 remains the latest mainline release. It launched in 2018, and the reported sales figure says it has surpassed 87 million copies. That commercial performance is a strong franchise signal, but sales do not establish when—or whether—Rockstar will release a successor.

Scenario versus evidence
| Question | What the reports establish | What they do not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Where did 2027–2028 come from? | A Citi analyst scenario reported by Stocktwits and The Fly. | It is not a Rockstar or Take-Two release commitment. |
| What supports the scenario? | Take-Two’s $2.4 billion in capitalized software and development costs and commentary about GTA VI’s alleged budget. | The accounting total does not name a game or reveal its stage of development. |
| Which Red Dead game is meant? | The wording says only “a Red Dead title.” | No sequel number, subtitle, story, studio team or project code has been disclosed. |
| Is there an official launch plan? | No announcement was identified in the reported material. | There is no confirmed date, trailer, platform list or production window. |
| Why does the timing matter to investors? | The Fly described the idea as potentially easing concern about an earnings slowdown after GTA VI. | Investor modeling is not evidence that a game is ready to ship. |
How to interpret “may not be unreasonable”
Analyst language of this kind is deliberately conditional. Citi is testing whether the known financial data are compatible with another major release after GTA VI; it is not reporting inside information from Rockstar. A 2027 launch would also require a project to be far enough along to complete development, testing, certification, marketing and distribution after Rockstar’s next GTA release. The reports provide no schedule for any of those steps.

- A collection of exclusive story mode boosts, bonuses and discounts
- Get three weapons Free at gunsmiths
A 2028 arrival is equally unconfirmed. It fits the same broad post-GTA VI scenario but has no stronger documentary support than 2027. Treating either year as “the release date” turns an accounting-based possibility into a fact the available evidence does not support.
What fans can responsibly conclude now
- There is credible commercial logic for Take-Two to continue investing in Red Dead: Red Dead Redemption 2 reportedly exceeded 87 million copies.
- Take-Two’s $2.4 billion capitalized-cost balance shows substantial company-wide development investment, but it cannot be allocated to an unnamed Red Dead project.
- Jennifer Kolbe’s reported rejection of a budget above $1.5 billion concerns speculation about GTA VI, not a Red Dead production announcement.
- The only reported Rockstar launch timing in this discussion is GTA VI on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- Until Rockstar or Take-Two publishes a Red Dead announcement, 2027 and 2028 should be treated as Citi’s scenario rather than a confirmed window.
Bottom line on a 2027 Red Dead release
Citi’s statement makes a 2027 or 2028 Red Dead launch a conceivable analyst case, especially in a post-GTA VI financial model. It does not make either year official, and the cited accounting figures do not prove that a successor is in production. The next hard evidence would have to come from Rockstar or Take-Two through a named project, trailer, platform announcement or release date.
