NexPhone alternatives: phones that can double as Linux computers

The best NexPhone alternative depends on what you mean by a Linux computer. If you want a Linux mobile operating system, start with a supported Ubuntu Touch phone such as a Fairphone or Volla model, or choose the PinePhone family for a more experimental, community-driven platform. If you mainly want Android apps on a monitor with a keyboard and mouse, a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone with DeX is the more practical choice. Those are different experiences: DeX is Android in a desktop-style interface, while Ubuntu Touch and the PinePhone ecosystem are Linux-first projects.

NexPhone is unusual because its maker advertises Android, a Debian-based desktop mode and optional Windows 11 on Arm on one handset. However, the current official page still presents it as a reservation product, and independent coverage described it as a prototype. Treat its operating-system, performance and support claims as vendor or announcement claims until current shipping hardware and testing establish otherwise.

What you are actually choosing

“A phone that can double as a Linux computer” can describe three very different setups:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Linux-first phone: the handset runs a mobile Linux distribution, with a connected-screen mode that can provide windows, a terminal and file management.
  • Android desktop mode: the handset remains Android, but an external monitor presents a desktop-like interface and Android apps run in resizable windows.
  • Multi-boot phone: one device is advertised as able to boot more than one operating system, potentially including a conventional Linux desktop and Windows on Arm.

Decide which of these you need before comparing hardware. A Linux-first phone may offer a better environment for shell work and open-source experimentation, but it can have fewer polished mobile apps and less predictable carrier support. An Android desktop mode usually preserves mainstream apps and cellular reliability, but it is not the same as running a Debian desktop. A multi-boot design is the most ambitious option and therefore needs the most scrutiny around availability, drivers, updates and recovery.

Ubuntu Touch: the most direct Linux-first alternative

What the platform provides

Ubuntu Touch is a Linux mobile operating system maintained around supported phones rather than one universal handset. Its connected-screen mode is described as a “windowed desktop,” so the phone can become a monitor-based workspace instead of merely mirroring a handset display. The project’s app information lists phone basics, a file browser and a terminal. That makes it the closest match for someone who wants Linux concepts and tools to remain central on the phone itself.

The official device directory includes PinePhone and PinePhone Pro, Fairphone 5, several Volla models and older OnePlus and Pixel devices, among others. The list is a compatibility directory, not a promise that every listed model has identical functionality. UBports explicitly advises checking whether the features you need work on the exact device and release.

How to select a supported phone

  1. Open the device directory and identify the exact model and variant. A family name is not enough; regional modem, storage and carrier variants can differ.
  2. Read the device’s feature notes. Confirm calls, text messaging, camera functions, suspend behavior, external-display support and any other requirement that matters to you.
  3. Check your carrier before installation. UBports warns that VoLTE communication can be problematic in North America, so a phone that installs successfully may still be unsuitable for dependable voice service in that region.
  4. Plan for a single-boot installation. UBports says dual boot is unsupported. Do not buy a supported phone assuming you can keep Android beside Ubuntu Touch with an officially supported boot menu.

What app compatibility really means

Ubuntu Touch’s native catalog is not equivalent to the Android or iOS app stores. The project identifies Waydroid as an independent route for running Android applications on Linux-based systems. That is a possible compatibility layer, not a guarantee that every Android application works, that notifications behave identically or that apps requiring proprietary services will function.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make a list of essential apps before buying: banking, authentication, navigation, workplace management, messaging and carrier applications are more important than the number of optional apps available. If one of those has no reliable native or Waydroid path, Ubuntu Touch may be better as a project phone than as your only handset.

Connecting Ubuntu Touch to a desk

The operating system’s windowed desktop is only useful if the hardware can send a display signal. Check the exact phone documentation for USB-C video output or another supported display path; USB-C charging alone does not imply video output. A typical station needs a compatible monitor, a keyboard, a mouse, power and, if the phone has one suitable port, a USB-C hub with HDMI and power delivery. The exact hub requirements are device-specific.

  • Combination on ePaper ereader and Smartphone -- with 5G calling and GPS function, this small e-ink mobile phone can access many places with internet, keep working and entertainment just in one device.

Once connected, expect a Linux-mobile workflow rather than a full desktop distribution with every desktop package preinstalled. The terminal and file browser cover basic administration and file work, but hardware acceleration, peripheral support and application availability can vary by model and release. Use the project’s device page and release notes as the authority for the phone you select.

PinePhone and PinePhone Pro: the open, experimental route

Why choose the PinePhone family

PINE64 describes the PinePhone family as Linux-first hardware with community mobile operating-system choices, mainline-Linux support and convergence as core ideas. That makes it attractive if your priority is openness, experimentation, kernel and driver work, or trying several Linux mobile environments rather than reproducing a conventional flagship-phone experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same design goal creates trade-offs. PinePhone buyers need to verify the current stock situation, the operating-system image for the exact model, modem and carrier operation in their country, camera and suspend behavior, and the applications they cannot live without. The reviewed material does not establish a current inventory position, a universal carrier guarantee or a performance benchmark, so treat those as purchase checks rather than assumptions.

Who should and should not use one as a primary phone

  • Good fit: developers, Linux enthusiasts, hardware tinkerers and users comfortable reading community documentation, changing images and accepting uneven feature maturity.
  • Risky fit: anyone who needs guaranteed banking applications, flawless camera quality, broad 5G support, predictable battery behavior or carrier help comparable to a mainstream phone.
  • Before ordering: verify that the exact PinePhone or PinePhone Pro revision is supported by the distribution you intend to run, then check modem bands and voice-over-LTE requirements for your carrier.

Desktop use and convergence

PinePhone’s convergence framing means the phone can be part of a monitor-and-peripherals setup, but the quality of that experience depends on the selected operating system, display hardware and current image. Do not infer that every Linux distribution offers the same window manager, acceleration or external-display behavior. A PinePhone is best approached as a platform for building and learning, not as a guaranteed replacement for a laptop.

Samsung DeX: the practical Android desktop alternative

What DeX does well

When “computer” means email, browser tabs, documents, messaging and Android applications on a larger screen, DeX is usually the least disruptive option. A compatible Galaxy phone can present a desktop-style interface on an external monitor while the phone supplies the apps and cellular connection. You keep access to the Android ecosystem instead of switching to a Linux mobile catalog.

Samsung’s current US DeX documentation lists supported Galaxy S and Z Fold families, along with exclusions and feature-specific limits. Support is model-specific, so confirm the exact model number and software version. Samsung also states that DeX on PC is no longer supported on newer devices updated to Android 15 or One UI 7 and later; that restriction concerns the PC client and is distinct from using DeX directly on an external display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What you need for an external-display setup

  1. Confirm the phone is on Samsung’s supported list. Do not rely on a product family name or an assumption that every Galaxy model includes DeX.
  2. Confirm the connection method. The phone must support the relevant wired or wireless display path, and the monitor must accept it. A USB-C port that charges is not automatically a video-output port.
  3. Connect the display and choose DeX when prompted. Use a compatible cable or hub, then attach power if the phone or hub requires it.
  4. Add input devices. Pair Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, or connect them through a hub. A wired station is generally simpler when you want charging and peripherals at the same time.
  5. Check application behavior. Samsung documents a five-app simultaneous-use limit in DeX mode. Some apps may remain phone-oriented, refuse to resize or require a specific version.

Why DeX is not a Linux replacement

DeX changes Android’s presentation and multitasking model; it does not turn the phone into a Debian installation. You do not automatically gain a standard Linux package manager, Linux desktop repositories or a full terminal environment. Android terminal applications and remote shells can cover some tasks, but they are not evidence that the phone is running a conventional Debian desktop. Choose DeX for Android compatibility and convenience, not for Linux-first administration.

NexPhone: what the current offer establishes

Advertised hardware and modes

The official NexPhone page lists Qualcomm’s QCM6490 platform, 12 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage with microSD expansion, and a 6.58-inch display with a 120 Hz refresh rate. The company advertises Android, a Debian-based Linux desktop mode and optional Windows 11 on Arm. It also says the Qualcomm platform has support through 2036; that is the company’s platform claim, not a guarantee of how long a particular handset will receive firmware, carrier certification or operating-system updates.

In a January 21, 2026 TechRadar Pro report, Nex Computer CEO and founder Emre Kosmaz described the intended setup as “The primary experience is an Android + Linux mode with full GPU acceleration for desktop-style workflows. NexPhone also offers Windows 11 on ARM via dual-boot with a mobile-style UI we developed.” That is the company CEO’s description, not an independent performance test.

External-display setup and shared storage

NexPhone’s How it Works page describes a USB-C or HDMI display connection, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse support, and a wired setup through a USB-C hub. The official page advertises an included five-port hub with connections for a keyboard, mouse, USB accessories, an HDMI monitor and charging. It also describes shared folders between Android and Linux and says connectivity is retained in desktop mode. These are vendor claims; no independent benchmark, battery test, app-compatibility test or carrier-reliability study was established.

Price, reservation and availability

The current official page shows a $199 reservation that locks in a stated total price of $599. Reservation terms and availability can change, so read the live offer before paying. Earlier announcement coverage is no longer the right price reference: TechRadar Pro reported $549 and expected Q3 2026 shipping on January 21, 2026, while Windows Central called the device a prototype in an article published February 5, 2026. The reviewed official page does not clearly establish a current shipping date, so do not treat those older estimates as confirmed delivery.

How to choose among the alternatives

Choose Ubuntu Touch when Linux is the priority

Select a supported Ubuntu Touch device if you want the phone itself to be Linux-based, can verify the exact model’s feature set and are prepared for uneven app and carrier support. This is the strongest fit for terminal work, open-source exploration and a Linux-mobile interface. It is a poor fit when a specific Android-only app or dependable North American VoLTE is non-negotiable.

Choose PinePhone when experimentation matters more than polish

Select PinePhone or PinePhone Pro if you want community distributions, mainline-Linux experimentation and hardware designed around that goal. Accept that you may need to change images, troubleshoot peripherals and compromise on consumer-phone conveniences. Verify current support and carrier operation before making it your only phone.

Choose DeX when Android apps are the requirement

Select a supported Galaxy model with DeX if your real goal is a monitor-based workspace that keeps Android applications, notifications and cellular service. It is the best fit for office work and media consumption when you do not need a Debian package ecosystem. Check the current Samsung compatibility list and the exact Android or One UI version before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reserve NexPhone only for the multi-OS proposition

NexPhone is the option to investigate if one handset running Android, a Linux desktop mode and optional Windows 11 on Arm is the central requirement. Balance that promise against the unconfirmed shipping status, reservation terms and lack of independent performance evidence. If you only need Linux, Ubuntu Touch or PinePhone is a simpler conceptual match; if you only need a desktop-style Android screen, DeX has a more established product category.

Hardware and accessory checklist

  • Display output: verify that the exact phone supports wired or wireless video output. USB-C charging capability by itself proves nothing about HDMI or DisplayPort support.
  • Power delivery: a monitor session can drain a phone quickly. Use a hub or dock that can charge the handset while peripherals and the display are connected.
  • Keyboard and mouse: Bluetooth avoids occupying ports; a wired setup can be more predictable and can connect through one hub.
  • Hub selection: a USB-C hub with HDMI and power delivery is useful for phones that support the required video mode. NexPhone says its five-port hub is included, so a separate hub is mainly relevant to other compatible phones or a second station.
  • Carrier bands and VoLTE: check regional modem bands, activation requirements and voice-over-LTE support before installing a Linux mobile OS.
  • Storage: assess how much space the operating system, containers, Android compatibility layers and desktop files need. NexPhone advertises 256 GB plus microSD expansion; storage details for the alternatives depend on the exact model.
  • Recovery plan: keep a second phone or another computer available for account recovery, flashing instructions and support calls during experimentation.

Troubleshooting common buying and setup mistakes

The monitor stays blank

First confirm that the phone supports video output through the connector you are using. Then test a known-good cable, select the correct monitor input, attach power to the hub and remove extra peripherals to isolate the problem. If the phone only supports wireless display, a passive USB-C-to-HDMI adapter will not solve it.

The phone works on Wi-Fi but not for calls

Check the carrier’s supported bands and VoLTE requirements for the exact regional model. This is particularly important with Ubuntu Touch, whose project documentation warns of possible North American VoLTE communication issues. A successful operating-system installation does not certify a modem for every network.

An essential Android app will not run on Ubuntu Touch

Check whether a native Ubuntu Touch application exists and then investigate Waydroid’s current support for that app. Because Waydroid is an independent project and app behavior varies, keep a fallback device if banking, authentication or work software is essential.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

A DeX app will not resize or multitask

Review Samsung’s current DeX limitations and the app’s own desktop behavior. DeX has a documented five-app simultaneous-use limit, and not every Android application is designed for a resizable desktop window.

You are expecting a shipping date from an old article

Use the live NexPhone product page for the current reservation price and availability language. Announcement-era figures such as $549 or Q3 2026 expected shipping should be treated as historical context, not a delivery promise.

Bottom line: which alternative is right for you?

For a genuine Linux phone, begin with the Ubuntu Touch device directory and choose a supported Fairphone, Volla or other model only after checking features and carrier compatibility. Choose PinePhone or PinePhone Pro if you deliberately want a community Linux project and accept hands-on maintenance. Choose a compatible Galaxy phone with DeX when you want the most usable Android-to-monitor workflow and do not require Debian.

NexPhone remains distinctive because it promises all three worlds—Android, Linux desktop and optional Windows 11 on Arm—in one device. Its current official offer is a $199 reservation toward a stated $599 total, but shipping is not clearly confirmed and the product was still described as a prototype in February 2026 coverage. That makes it a specialist choice for the multi-boot concept, not the default recommendation for every reader seeking a phone-powered computer.
