Nex includes five starter games, with an optional subscription for a larger catalog. Nintendo Switch Sports offers eight sports and one-system play for one to four people. Neither is a universal winner: the right choice depends on the games you want, your room setup and whether motion play is the console’s main job.
How the two systems handle motion play
Nex Playground: play in front of a camera
Nex Playground is a dedicated active-play device for a TV. Its wide-angle camera and motion engine track players, while the remote is used for setup and navigation rather than controlling games. Nex describes its current multiplayer games as not requiring multiple controllers. This makes it the more purpose-built option for families seeking motion play without handing each player a controller. Nex Playground’s product page describes the system and its included games.

Nintendo Switch: motion games on a general console
Nintendo Switch Sports uses Joy-Con controllers for motion controls. It is one game for a broader console, rather than the defining purpose of the hardware. Nintendo lists eight sports: Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay). One system supports one to four players. The Nintendo Switch Sports listing also points to other motion-related games, including WarioWare: Move It! and Fitness Boxing 3.
Games included and what they cost
Nex’s US product page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists the Playground at $299 and includes five games: Fruit Ninja, Whack-a-Mole Deluxe, Party Fowl, Go Keeper and Starri. Play Pass is optional; Nex lists it at $49 for three months or $89 for twelve months and says it unlocks a catalog of 60-plus active games, including Bluey, Barbie, NFL FLAG, Sesame Street and PAC-MAN. These are Nex’s listed prices and catalog claims, which can change.
#1 Best Overall
- 5 GAMES INCLUDED. UNLOCK MORE WITH PLAY PASS. Playground comes with Fruit Ninja, Starri, Whac-a-Mole, Go Keeper, and Party Fowl. A separate purchase of a 3-Month ($49) or 12-Month Play Pass ($89) is required to access the full catalog of games and get new games each month, including Barbie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, How to Train Your Dragon, Peppa Pig, Care Bears, Elmo, Miraculous Ladybug, Gabby's Dollhouse, Kung Fu Panda and more.
- GET MOVING WITH ACTIVE FAMILY FUN. Nex Playground is a new kind of video game console that gets your family moving. It easily connects to your TV, transforming your living room into an active play space. Within minutes, your family will be playing Fruit Ninja, Whac-a-Mole and more. Using a built-in camera to track motion and natural body movements, anyone in the family can jump right in.
- JUST USE YOUR BODY TO PLAY. Play naturally just by moving your body. Playground uses the magic of AI to follow your movements using the built-in wide-angle camera. No controllers or clunky trackers! Up to 4 players can play at the same time, so everyone can get moving together.
- GAMES YOU'LL LOVE MOVING TO. Playground is packed with interactive motion games, turning your living room into an arcade, theme park, gym, and more. There is something for everyone. It is perfect for indoor family game night, after school activities, or a playdate with friends.
- EASY SET UP. Playground connects to your TV or projector with a simple HDMI connection and gets everyone in on the fun. It's small and sits elegantly on any console or mantle, and can easily fit in a backpack for playdates and more. From ages 5 and up—Playground is the life of every party.
Nintendo Switch Sports is a separate game purchase. Nintendo’s listing says online play and save-data cloud features are associated with a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Current Switch hardware and game prices, and possible accessory costs, are not established here, so it is not possible to declare which option costs less overall. Compare current prices for the console, the specific games your family wants and any subscription or accessories before deciding.
Room, setup and age considerations
Nex recommends roughly 6 by 6 feet of clear play space, with the device centered in front of or below the TV and positioned 15 to 60 inches high so it can see the players. Its product page recommends the system for ages five and up; it says three- and four-year-olds may enjoy a wider variety of games with an adult or older sibling. Nex also notes that some games are physically demanding, especially for children under six. These are the manufacturer’s recommendations, not an independent assessment.

Privacy, online play and parental oversight
Nex says motion analysis happens locally on the device and video is not processed in the cloud. It also says some games may temporarily record local video for replays or highlights, but those videos are not saved. Nex states that its games have no ads, violence, microtransactions or chat features, and that downloaded games work offline. These are Nex’s claims about its product.

Nintendo Switch Sports supports online play and carries the ESRB descriptors “Mild Violence,” “Users Interact” and “In-Game Purchases.” Nintendo provides a parental-controls resource; the game listing and parent resource establish that parental controls exist, but do not, on their own, establish the details of individual settings. Nex’s offline-capable play and Nintendo’s online features are different arrangements, not a like-for-like measure of safety.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which one should your family choose?
- Pick Nex Playground if controller-free, camera-based active play is the priority, your room can accommodate the recommended play area, and the included games or optional Play Pass catalog suit your family.
- Pick Nintendo Switch if you want a general console as well as motion games, prefer the specific sports in Switch Sports, and are comfortable using Joy-Con controllers.
- Compare specific games and total cost first if budget is decisive: Nex lists its hardware and Play Pass prices, but a complete current Switch cost comparison requires checking the console, game and any accessories or online membership you would actually buy.
Official product descriptions do not establish which system tracks movement more accurately, keeps families active longer, works better across ages or proves more reliable under comparable conditions. There is no documented basis here for claiming that either produces more exercise.
