Nex Playground Setup: Connect It to Your TV and Start Playing

To set up a Nex Playground, connect the cube to your television with HDMI, power it from a wall outlet with the included USB-C adapter, select the matching HDMI input, and follow the on-screen account prompts. Keep it on Wi-Fi while the five Starter Pack games install; Nex says the download can take up to an hour depending on internet speed. You can skip Play Pass during setup, and games that have finished downloading can be played without an internet connection.

This guide covers the complete first-time setup, safe cable choices, camera placement, remote options, offline use, and the quickest way to fix a blank TV screen. It also explains what to check before contacting support, so you can separate a TV-input problem from a power or Playground problem.

What you need before connecting the Playground

Gather everything before turning the device on. You will need the Nex Playground cube, its included HDMI cable, the included USB-C power cable and power adapter, the included remote and batteries, your Wi-Fi network name and password, and an email address for the Nex account. Keep a smartphone or laptop nearby because account setup may take you to the Nex account web portal.

  • A television with an available HDMI input
  • The included HDMI cable
  • The original Nex Playground USB-C power cable and adapter
  • Two batteries for the included remote, installed with the positive side facing down
  • Wi-Fi credentials and an email address
  • A smartphone or laptop for web-based account steps

The usual connection has two separate jobs: HDMI carries the picture and sound to the TV, while the power adapter supplies electricity to the cube. Connecting HDMI alone will not turn the Playground on, and plugging in power without selecting the matching TV input can leave you looking at a blank screen.

Nex Playground - The Active Play System for Kids & Families Where Indoor Physical Activity Meets Interactive Family Fun and is Great for Gaming Nights, Parties and Playdates
  • 5 GAMES INCLUDED. UNLOCK MORE WITH PLAY PASS. Playground comes with Fruit Ninja, Starri, Whac-a-Mole, Go Keeper, and Party Fowl. A separate purchase of a 3-Month ($49) or 12-Month Play Pass ($89) is required to access the full catalog of games and get new games each month, including Barbie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, How to Train Your Dragon, Peppa Pig, Care Bears, Elmo, Miraculous Ladybug, Gabby's Dollhouse, Kung Fu Panda and more.
  • GET MOVING WITH ACTIVE FAMILY FUN. Nex Playground is a new kind of video game console that gets your family moving. It easily connects to your TV, transforming your living room into an active play space. Within minutes, your family will be playing Fruit Ninja, Whac-a-Mole and more. Using a built-in camera to track motion and natural body movements, anyone in the family can jump right in.
  • JUST USE YOUR BODY TO PLAY. Play naturally just by moving your body. Playground uses the magic of AI to follow your movements using the built-in wide-angle camera. No controllers or clunky trackers! Up to 4 players can play at the same time, so everyone can get moving together.
  • GAMES YOU'LL LOVE MOVING TO. Playground is packed with interactive motion games, turning your living room into an arcade, theme park, gym, and more. There is something for everyone. It is perfect for indoor family game night, after school activities, or a playdate with friends.
  • EASY SET UP. Playground connects to your TV or projector with a simple HDMI connection and gets everyone in on the fun. It's small and sits elegantly on any console or mantle, and can easily fit in a backpack for playdates and more. From ages 5 and up—Playground is the life of every party.

Place the cube where you can later create a clear play area, rather than completing setup inside a cabinet or behind the television. The camera needs an unobstructed view of the player, and moving the unit after calibration or the first game can be inconvenient.

Connect Nex Playground to the TV

1. Plug in the HDMI cable

Insert one end of the included HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the back of the Playground. Connect the other end to an open HDMI port on the television. Push both plugs in firmly; a partially seated connector can produce a blank screen or intermittent picture. Note the port number printed beside the socket, such as HDMI 1, HDMI 2, or HDMI 3.

For a normal setup, the included cable is the right first choice. You do not need to buy a special cable when the supplied one is present and undamaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Select the same HDMI input on the TV

Use the TV remote’s Input, Source, or similar button and choose the exact port you used, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2. The selected label must match the physical socket. If the TV remains on a different input, the Playground can be powered correctly while the screen still appears empty.

If you are unsure which socket you used, cycle through the TV’s HDMI inputs until the Playground interface appears. Once you identify the working input, remember it for future sessions; the TV may return to its last-used source after being switched off.

3. Connect wall power

Connect the included USB-C power cable to the Playground and plug the adapter directly into a wall outlet. Nex says to use the original Nex Playground power cable only. Avoid extension cords and power strips for the setup. Do not substitute a phone, laptop, or generic USB-C power supply.

Make sure the connector is fully inserted into the cube, then give the device time to start. Keep the cable routed away from the intended play area so nobody can trip over it while moving in front of the camera.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Prepare the remote

Open the battery compartment and insert the included batteries with the positive side facing down, as shown in Nex’s setup instructions. Keep the remote pointed toward the cube while the first-run prompts appear. If the remote does not respond, remove and reinstall the batteries, checking their orientation before assuming the Playground itself has failed.

5. Turn on Game Mode if your TV has it

Open the television’s picture or input settings and enable Game Mode when available. Menu names differ by manufacturer, but Nex recommends the setting for Playground use. If your TV does not offer Game Mode, continue with the default picture settings; this option is recommended, not a prerequisite for connecting the console.

Complete the first-run setup

Follow the on-screen prompts

After the TV displays the Playground interface, follow each prompt with the included remote. The flow asks for the information needed to associate the device with your Nex account and connect it to Wi-Fi. Enter the network password carefully; an incorrect password can leave the device at the setup stage even though the HDMI picture is working.

Keep the cube within range of the wireless network during this process. Wi-Fi is needed for the initial system activity and game downloads, so moving the device to a room with weak coverage before setup finishes can slow or interrupt installation.

  • Transform your living room into an active play space with built-in camera and AI motion tracking that lets up to 4 players use natural body movements - no controllers needed.
  • Includes 5 free games (Fruit Ninja, Starri, Whac-a-Mole, Go Keeper, and Party Fowl) with access to 30+ more games through Play Pass subscription.
  • Play with beloved characters including Barbie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Peppa Pig, Elmo, Miraculous Ladybug, Gabby's Dollhouse, and Kung Fu Panda.
  • Easy setup with simple HDMI connection to your TV or projector, compact design fits on any console or mantle, and portable enough for playdates.
  • Get new content and seasonal updates every month, offering year-round entertainment across various genres from dance to fitness to sports.

Use the account portal when prompted

If setup displays a web address or code, use the prepared smartphone or laptop to open the Nex account portal and enter the requested email or activation information. Keep the television and the phone or laptop available until the device confirms that the account step is complete. A phone or computer is useful for this web step, but it is not a replacement for the remote when navigating the TV interface.

Skip Play Pass if you are not activating it

Buying Play Pass or entering an activation code for additional games is optional during account creation. Choose the skip option if you only want to start with the included Starter Pack. Skipping this screen does not prevent you from completing basic setup or downloading the five Starter Pack games.

If you do activate Play Pass, allow its games additional installation time as well. You can decide whether to use the subscription without changing the physical HDMI and power connection.

Wait for the Starter Pack installation

Leave the Playground connected to Wi-Fi while the five Starter Pack games download. Nex says the initial download may take up to one hour, depending on internet speed. If Play Pass is activated, its games may also take up to an hour to install.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The duration is not a fixed countdown. A faster connection may finish sooner, while a slower connection can take the full estimated period. Keep the TV on the Playground input and avoid disconnecting power while the tiles are changing status.

Do not select Play on a tile that still says Pending or Installing. Wait until those labels disappear and the game tile is ready. Interrupting the process or repeatedly launching an unfinished tile can make it look as though a game is missing when it is still downloading. If only one title remains pending, leave the system connected to Wi-Fi rather than treating it as a TV or HDMI fault.

Restart after installation if the setup guide requests it

Nex’s first-time setup guidance suggests rebooting after all games finish installing. Disconnect the USB-C power cable from the Playground, then reconnect it. Allow the interface to load fully before starting a game. This restart is a simple finalization step after installation, not a factory reset, and it does not replace the account or game-download process.

Position the cube for reliable motion tracking

Choose the height and location

Place the Playground centered in front of or below the TV, near the edge of the stand or table. Nex recommends a device height between 15 and 60 inches. The edge placement gives the camera a better view of the player’s body than a location recessed behind the television or surrounded by objects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the lens facing the play area. Do not cover it with a soundbar, decoration, game case, or cable bundle. If the television is wall-mounted, a stable surface below it usually gives the camera a clearer angle than a shelf high above the screen. The cube should remain stable when players move, so avoid a narrow or easily bumped surface.

Leave the recommended player distance

Nex recommends that players stand between 3 feet 4 inches and 13 feet from the device. The usable distance can vary with a player’s height and with the amount of available light, so begin near the middle of that range and adjust if the camera does not capture the full body.

At the closest distance, a tall player may need to step back to keep their arms and feet in view. At the far end, smaller players or dim lighting may require moving forward. Treat the range as a starting guide rather than a promise that every room, player, and lighting condition will track identically.

Clear a minimum play area

Plan for approximately 6 feet by 6 feet of unobstructed floor space. Move coffee tables, chairs, toys, pets, and loose cables out of the tracking area. Players should be able to raise their arms and step sideways without hitting furniture or another person.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For more than one player, the same clear zone needs to accommodate everyone at once. Keep spectators outside the active area and make sure the HDMI and power cables do not cross the route between the cube and the players.

Control lighting and temperature

Use even room lighting and avoid placing a bright window or lamp directly behind the player. Strong backlighting can make body outlines harder for a camera to distinguish. If tracking is inconsistent, try turning the player toward the room light or relocating a lamp without moving the cube outside its recommended height.

Nex states that the device is designed to operate safely from 0 to 45°C (32 to 113°F); do not place it against a heater, in direct hot sunlight, or in an unventilated enclosure. Normal indoor placement with open airflow is preferable to a closed cabinet or a spot exposed to outdoor temperature extremes.

Understand what requires Wi-Fi and what works offline

The HDMI cable carries the picture and sound to the television, while the power adapter supplies electricity. Wi-Fi is a separate requirement used for system updates and downloading new games. The Playground is therefore not a completely wireless TV accessory: it still needs a physical HDMI connection and wall power even when a game itself can run offline.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Once a game has finished downloading, Nex says it can be played offline. This is useful in a room with weak Wi-Fi, but it does not eliminate the need to connect during first setup, updates, or later downloads. If a tile remains in a pending state, reconnect the Playground to Wi-Fi and allow the installation to complete before troubleshooting the game itself.

Before taking the cube somewhere without internet, open each intended game once while connected and confirm that its tile no longer says Pending or Installing. Keep the Wi-Fi credentials available because a future system update or newly added title will require another connection.

Use the included remote or a compatible TV remote

Included remote

The supplied remote is the default control method. Confirm the batteries are oriented positive-side down and keep the remote aimed toward the cube while navigating setup and launching games. It is the most predictable option when you are diagnosing a connection problem because it does not depend on TV-specific control features.

HDMI-CEC from a TV remote

Some televisions support HDMI-CEC, a feature that allows one device’s remote to control another over HDMI. If your TV offers CEC, enable it in the television’s settings and test navigation with the TV remote. Manufacturers use different names and menu locations, and not every TV exposes the same controls, so compatibility is model-dependent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CEC is optional. If enabling it does not produce navigation, turn it back off or return to the included remote; changing CEC settings will not repair a missing HDMI picture caused by the wrong input, a loose plug, or a failed cable.

Third-party universal remotes

Nex documents procedures for some third-party universal remotes, but support is not universal. Follow the instructions for your specific remote only if its model is listed as compatible. If the remote cannot move through the Playground interface, return to the included remote before changing cables or resetting the console. TV model and remote compatibility are the relevant variables, not simply whether a remote is labeled universal.

Fix a black or blank screen

A blank display is most often an input, port, cable, or connection problem. Work through the checks in order so you do not replace a working accessory unnecessarily.

1. Confirm the selected input

Use the TV remote to verify that the active input is the HDMI number where the Playground is connected. Check the label beside the TV socket rather than relying on memory. If the TV shows another device or a “no signal” message, switch sources explicitly instead of waiting for automatic detection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Try another HDMI port

Move the cable to a different HDMI input on the television and select that new input in the TV menu. A single port can fail or be disabled by the TV’s configuration even when the other ports work. Record which port produces a picture so you can restore other equipment later.

3. Temporarily disconnect other HDMI equipment

Unplug streaming sticks, receivers, sound systems, or other devices from the television while testing. Nex notes that other connected equipment can sometimes interfere with the HDMI handshake. Reconnect those devices after the Playground picture appears, one at a time if you need to identify an interfering connection.

4. Reseat or replace the HDMI cable

Remove and firmly reconnect both ends of the included cable. If you have another known-good cable, test it. Nex says a good-quality HDMI 2.1 cable from a third-party retailer is acceptable when the included cable is missing or faulty. Nex does not sell an official HDMI replacement, so a quality HDMI 2.1 cable is the supported replacement path for the video connection.

5. Use Samsung’s HDMI diagnostic when applicable

On a Samsung TV, open Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → HDMI Troubleshooting. Run the port checks in sequence and follow the television’s result. Other brands use different diagnostic paths, so do not assume Samsung’s menu names apply to another manufacturer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Perform a complete power cycle

Disconnect power from both the Playground and the wall outlet. Wait at least 10 seconds, then reconnect the adapter directly to the wall and reconnect the USB-C cable to the cube. Select the correct HDMI input again after the TV and Playground restart. A direct wall connection is part of Nex’s troubleshooting guidance; avoid adding an extension cord or power strip while testing.

7. Reboot after game installation

If the image worked during setup but disappeared after downloads, wait until every game finishes installing and then disconnect and reconnect the USB-C power cable once, as Nex recommends in its first-time guide. Let the interface load before pressing Play.

When the problem continues

If multiple HDMI ports and a known-good cable produce no picture, and a direct wall connection and power cycle do not help, record which inputs and cables you tested before contacting Nex support. That information lets support distinguish a TV-side issue from a Playground or power fault. Do not jump directly to a generic USB-C power supply, since Nex specifically warns against unsupported power cables.

Replace a cable safely

HDMI cable

The included HDMI cable is the intended starting point. Nex does not sell an official replacement HDMI cable, but says a good-quality HDMI 2.1 cable from a third-party retailer can be used. Choose a cable long enough to reach without tension and avoid sharply bending it behind the TV. A replacement HDMI cable addresses the video path only; it cannot substitute for the Playground’s power cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Power cable

Power is different: Nex specifically warns against third-party or unsupported power cables. If the original cable is lost or damaged, contact Nex customer support for a replacement. Availability is fee-based, and support provides the current price and ordering details. Do not attempt to solve a power problem with a generic USB-C charger, even if its connector fits physically.

A practical first-session checklist

Before handing the controller to a player, verify that the television is on the correct HDMI input, the Game Mode setting is enabled if available, all five Starter Pack tiles have finished installing, and the camera has a clear view of the intended floor area. Confirm that players can stand safely inside the recommended distance without furniture, cables, or other people crossing the tracking zone.

For a final room check, place the cube 15 to 60 inches high, keep players generally 3 feet 4 inches to 13 feet away, and reserve about 6 by 6 feet of clear space. Keep the unit away from heat and direct hot sunlight, and route cables outside the movement area.

Keep the Wi-Fi credentials and the account email available for future updates. After the games are downloaded, the console can be taken to a location without internet for those installed titles, but reconnect it whenever Nex requests a system update or a new game download.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I connect my Nex Playground to my TV?

Connect the included HDMI cable from the back of the Playground to an open HDMI port on the TV, select that exact HDMI input, and connect the included USB-C power cable to a wall outlet. HDMI carries the picture and sound; wall power is also required.

Which HDMI input should I use?

Use any available HDMI input that works with your TV, then select the matching label in the TV’s Input or Source menu. For example, a cable in HDMI 2 requires the TV to be set to HDMI 2.

Do I need Play Pass to finish setup?

No. Play Pass purchase or entering an activation code is optional during account creation. You can skip it and use the five-game Starter Pack.

How long do the first games take to download?

Nex says the five Starter Pack games may take up to one hour, depending on internet speed. Play Pass games, if activated, may also take up to an hour. Wait until tiles no longer say Pending or Installing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Nex Playground work without Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is required for initial setup, system updates, and new game downloads. After a game has finished downloading, Nex says that installed game can be played offline.

How far should players stand from the cube?

Nex recommends 3 feet 4 inches to 13 feet, with the best distance varying by player height and available lighting. Start near the middle of that range and adjust if the camera does not see the full body.

Why is my Nex Playground screen blank?

Confirm the TV input, try another HDMI port, temporarily disconnect other HDMI devices, reseat or replace the HDMI cable, and power-cycle the Playground and TV-side connection for at least 10 seconds. Samsung owners can use Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → HDMI Troubleshooting.

Can I use a different power cable or charger?

No. Nex says to use the original Nex Playground power cable and warns against third-party or unsupported power cables. Contact Nex support for a fee-based replacement and current ordering details.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can my TV remote control the Playground?

Possibly. Some TVs support HDMI-CEC, and Nex documents procedures for certain third-party universal remotes. Compatibility depends on the TV or remote model, so the included remote remains the default option.

The Bottom Line

The supported first-time path is straightforward: HDMI to the TV, the original Nex power cable to a wall outlet, the matching TV input, and the on-screen Wi-Fi and account steps. Allow up to an hour for game downloads, skip Play Pass if you do not need it, and do not launch tiles marked Pending or Installing. For dependable motion tracking, place the cube 15–60 inches high, leave about 6 by 6 feet clear, and keep players roughly 3 feet 4 inches to 13 feet away. If the screen is blank, check the input, port, connected HDMI equipment, cable, and direct-wall power before seeking support.
