A car struck a crowd gathered for the Newcastle Knights’ grand-final send-off in Wallsend at about 9:30am local time on Saturday, 3 October 2026. Ten people were injured, and an 18-year-old provisional-licence driver was arrested. Police said the incident was not targeted; the cause and any final charges had not been established in the reports available at the time of the latest updates.
What happened at the Knights’ send-off
Supporters had gathered beside Newcastle Link Road at the Transfield Drive roundabout in Wallsend to watch the Knights’ team bus leave for Sydney ahead of the NRL grand final. At about 9:30am, a car hit the crowd. The club’s bus was diverted after the crash. ABC News’ explainer and The Guardian’s report place the collision during the community farewell.

Injuries and emergency response
ABC reported that 10 people were injured. Three emergency-services helicopters and 15 ambulances attended, and several patients were taken to John Hunter Hospital. Supporters at the scene helped provide first aid before emergency services transported casualties.
In a later update on 3 October, ABC said three patients had been discharged and seven remained in hospital. At that update, a five-year-old girl was in critical condition and a 67-year-old man was serious but stable. The Guardian also reported those two conditions. These are time-specific updates, not a current medical bulletin; conditions can change. See ABC’s live report for the update cited here.

What police have said—and what remains unclear
Police arrested the driver, an 18-year-old provisional-licence holder. ABC reported Assistant Commissioner David Waddell saying police alleged the car had been driven “erratically” before entering the crowd, and that police expected to lay charges. Police also said the incident was not targeted. The Guardian reported police saying initial inquiries did not indicate a terror-related incident.
Those comments describe an active investigation. The reports cited here do not establish a final charge, court outcome, definitive cause or motive. The Guardian quoted Lord Mayor Gavin Morris saying the driver appeared to have been revving the car and then lost control; Morris also stressed that the matter was under investigation. That account is not a settled finding.

A celebration became a distressing morning
The crash abruptly changed the mood of a gathering intended to send the team off to the grand final. Knights chief executive Peter Parr said the morning, which had brought thousands of Novocastrians together to farewell the team, had “understandably turned into a distressing morning.” The club expressed support for those injured, their families and people who witnessed the crash. ABC reported Parr’s statement and the club’s response.

Police Minister Yasmin Catley called the crash “an absolute tragedy — a tragedy that needn’t have happened,” according to ABC’s account. In a statement reproduced by Inside Local Government, Lord Mayor Morris wrote: “This terrible incident is hard, and it’s okay to feel it,” and urged the Newcastle and Hunter community to support one another in the coming days and weeks.
