How many people were injured?
Police said 10 people were taken to hospital. The reported conditions changed over the course of the day: ABC initially reported that a five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man were in critical condition. In a later same-day update, three people had been discharged and seven remained in hospital, with one in critical condition. These are time-specific updates, not a final account of every patient’s outcome. ABC News’ later update contains the revised figures.
What did police say about the driver and cause?
ABC reported that police identified the driver as an 18-year-old P-plater and said he had been arrested. NSW Police Assistant Commissioner David Waddell said: “Unfortunately a young 18-year-old P-plater driving erratically has lost control of the vehicle and gone into the crowd.” Police said the incident was not targeted and expected to lay charges. The same-day reports did not establish which charges, if any, were ultimately filed or the result of any court proceedings. ABC’s report attributed the police comments.
