What happened at the Newcastle Knights send-off?
Supporters had gathered along the Knights’ route to farewell the team before it travelled to Sydney for Sunday’s NRL grand final. Emergency services responded at about 9:30am to reports of multiple people struck near the Transfield Drive roundabout in Wallsend, according to ABC News. The Knights’ bus diverted from its planned route after the crash, NSW Government reporting said.

ABC News reported that three emergency-services helicopters and 15 ambulances attended. Those figures describe the response reported at the scene, not a measure of how seriously people were injured.

ABC News reported that 10 people were transported to hospital. At the time of its report, a five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man were in critical condition; the other eight people were reported stable. The report also identified a second five-year-old girl, a two-year-old girl and a 63-year-old woman among those injured. The Associated Press likewise reported 10 injured people, including children, attributing condition information to NSW Police.

What have police said about the driver and the crash?
Police arrested the driver, an 18-year-old P-plater, at the scene, ABC News reported. Assistant Commissioner David Waddell gave this preliminary account: “Unfortunately a young 18-year-old P-plater driving erratically has lost control of the vehicle and gone into the crowd.” That is an attributed description of events, not a final finding about the cause.

ABC News reported the driver was undergoing drug and alcohol testing and was likely to be charged that afternoon. That report does not establish that a charge was filed. The Associated Press said the investigation was ongoing.

Was the Wallsend crash targeted or terrorism-related?
Police said the incident was not targeted, according to ABC News. The Associated Press reported that police did not believe it was terrorism-related. Neither statement establishes a final cause or motive, and the investigation was still ongoing in the AP’s report.

How did the community respond?
City of Newcastle Lord Mayor Gavin Morris said the morning of celebration had been marked by a “very serious incident” and that the community was “heartbroken,” according to Inside Local Government.
