He was rescued, taken to a clinic and airlifted to hospital. The cause of death and the precise circumstances had not been established in the reports available at the time.
What happened off Peng Chau
Police received a report at about 12:21 p.m. on October 1 that a male swimmer had become unconscious in the water off Tung Wan Beach on Peng Chau, The Standard and Hong Kong 01 reported. Event personnel brought him ashore before he was taken to Peng Chau Clinic.

He was then transferred by Government Flying Service helicopter to Eastern Hospital. Reports say rescuers performed CPR using an automated chest-compression device. He was pronounced dead after resuscitation attempts.
Who the swimmer was
The Standard described the swimmer as a foreign national in his 50s. Hong Kong 01 and on.cc identified him more specifically as a 58-year-old New Zealand national who lived in Hong Kong and held a Hong Kong identity card. Those biographical details are attributed to those outlets.

Cause of death remains unconfirmed
As of the reports published on October 1 and 2, the cause of death and the exact circumstances were still under investigation and subject to an autopsy, according to Hong Kong 01 and on.cc.
