For a mainstream chocolate made in New Zealand, Whittaker’s is the clearest choice supported by current company information: the family-owned business says all its products are made at its Porirua factory. Cadbury has a significant New Zealand history, but the available evidence does not establish where Cadbury products now sold in New Zealand are manufactured. For craft chocolate, Wellington Chocolate Factory offers a current Aotearoa-made option.

Which chocolate is made in New Zealand?
Whittaker’s: the strongest documented mainstream answer
Whittaker’s says it has been family-owned and operated since 1896 and that “All of our products are made at our factory in Porirua, New Zealand.” These are statements from the company’s official FAQ, rather than an independent audit. The company also describes its products as available through supermarkets, service stations, dairies and online in New Zealand.

Its current product catalogue lists familiar choices such as Creamy Milk alongside 50% Dark, 72% Dark Ghana, specialty blocks, bars, gift formats and baking pips. A listing does not mean every retailer carries every format, so check local stock before making a trip.

Cadbury: important history, but current origin needs checking
Cadbury’s New Zealand story includes a long local history. Te Ara’s historical account says Cadbury first supplied New Zealand from its factory in England and sought a local manufacturer in 1928 after import duties increased. That history does not establish where a Cadbury product sold in New Zealand today was made. To answer that for a specific bar or block, check its packaging rather than assuming the brand’s history indicates its present manufacturing location.

Local craft makers: a different kind of choice
Wellington Chocolate Factory’s shop describes its Everyday Range as craft Pacific chocolate made in Aotearoa and currently offers chocolate for sale. It is a concrete local craft option, distinct from a broad supermarket range. Product selection and availability can change.
MBIE’s 2018 industry overview also names OCHO, Hogarth and Chocolatier Bennett’s among New Zealand chocolate makers. This is a dated industry snapshot, not evidence of their current rankings or what is in stock now; check each maker’s current range and retailer availability.

How Whittaker’s compares with Cadbury
The most useful evidence-based distinction is about what can be verified, not which brand tastes better. Whittaker’s makes a current, explicit company statement about its ownership and Porirua production. Cadbury’s documented local manufacturing story is historical; the evidence here does not establish present-day production arrangements for Cadbury products sold in New Zealand.

No independent head-to-head taste test or consumer-preference result is available to support a winner on flavour. Personal preference will depend on the particular product and the style of chocolate you enjoy; this comparison makes no tasting claim.
Choosing between mainstream and craft chocolate
- Choose a mainstream block if you want a familiar everyday format and broad retail access. Whittaker’s Creamy Milk is one example listed in its catalogue; confirm the shop has the size or format you want.
- Look at craft makers if you want to explore a smaller maker’s range or a gift-oriented option. Wellington Chocolate Factory is a current example with an official shop and an Aotearoa-made Everyday Range.
- Compare price fairly by checking the same retailer on the same date and comparing like-sized products. No comparable current prices were established for these brands, and promotions and local stock can vary.
- Verify the individual product when country of manufacture is decisive. Brand ownership and a maker’s general description do not always answer where a particular item was produced; the package is the practical check for Cadbury products.
What the sustainability information does—and does not—show
Whittaker’s says its cocoa is traceable and Rainforest Alliance sourced on its sustainability page. The company reports that 80.74% of its packaging was recyclable by weight in 2025 and says it planted 70,000 canopy shade trees in Ghana in 2024. These are company-reported claims and figures, not an independent comparison across chocolate brands. They do not establish that one brand is categorically more ethical or sustainable than another.

Equivalent figures for the other brands are not established here.
