Rockstar Support says the physical version comes in a box with a digital download code. Take-Two Interactive’s June 2026 pre-order announcement describes the same code-in-box format. A listing for that physical product should not be described as a disc unless the seller and current product details establish otherwise.

Why an early-download offer is risky
TechCrunch reported on a fake GTA VI demo site that distributed malware disguised as the game. Kaspersky has described fake leaks and early-access scams, while Malwarebytes has documented multiple approaches, including fake demo or extended-look sites and a purported leaked-copy offer. These reports show that criminals use interest in early access to lure people into downloading malicious files or visiting deceptive sites.
A familiar logo, convincing screenshots, or Rockstar’s correct release date does not authenticate a page. A scammer can copy those details. Kaspersky advises checking a site’s address against Rockstar’s official website; the safer approach is to navigate to Rockstar directly instead of following an unsolicited download link.

How to check a GTA VI download claim
- Check the platform claim. Rockstar lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Treat a purported early PC build as unverified and do not run it.
- Check the source and address. Find the announcement on Rockstar’s official game or support pages. Do not trust a lookalike domain just because it uses the game’s name or branding.
- Do not install files offered as demos, leaks, or early access. Avoid download links shared in social posts, file-sharing pages, messages, or unofficial sites.
- Verify a purchase listing before paying. Check that the seller is legitimate, the listing is for the platform you own, and a physical listing accurately describes the code-in-box format. Confirm current availability and terms with Rockstar and the retailer.
What New York fans should know about the warning
The available source material does not identify a New York State, New York City, or other New York authority that issued a specific warning. New York is therefore the audience for this advice, not a verified source of the alert. Claims that “New York officials warned” would need an original local advisory before they could be attributed to officials.
