Set up a new vivo phone in this order: connect to Wi‑Fi and sign in, create a PIN or password before enabling biometrics, transfer data with vivo’s built-in migration tool, record the model and IMEI, then check for system updates. Back up important data first and leave free storage for the update package. Warranty, replacement rights and pre-installed apps depend on the country, exact model and software version; the warranty figures below are specifically for products purchased and serviced in India.
What to do first with a new vivo phone
The safest setup sequence prevents three common problems: losing data while moving from an old phone, running out of space during the first update and being unable to prove which model or software version you own when requesting service.

- Join a trusted Wi‑Fi network. System downloads can be large, and vivo’s manual recommends Wi‑Fi for updates. Keep the phone connected to power if a major update is installing.
- Sign in to the required accounts. Complete the Google account and vivo account prompts shown during setup. Use the accounts that you intend to keep using for backups, app downloads and device services.
- Create the primary screen lock. Open Settings > Security > Screen lock and choose a PIN, password or pattern. Enrol fingerprint or face unlock only after the primary PIN or password is set; biometrics are secondary unlock methods and the phone can require the primary credential after a restart or security event.
- Move your data before installing optional apps. The built-in migration flow is most predictable on a clean phone. Installing apps first can create duplicate data or cause the same-app data on the new phone to be overwritten when the transfer runs.
- Record the phone’s identity. In Settings > About phone, note the exact model name or number, software version, IMEI and device status. Save a screenshot or write these details somewhere separate from the phone. The same area links to Customer service, where vivo provides the manual, service-centre information and e-warranty activation options.
- Check for updates. Open Settings > System update and let the phone check for a newer package. If Smart Upgrade is available on your model, it can download updates automatically over Wi‑Fi during idle hours.
- Make a backup before upgrading. A system update normally preserves user data, but vivo still advises backing up important information. Do not interrupt installation, and do not flash an unauthorised ROM; vivo warns that unauthorised updates can create security risks.
How to transfer everything from an old phone
Use vivo’s migration tool before you customise the new handset. The exact labels can vary by software version, but the manual describes a flow that asks what type of old phone you have, then pairs the devices with a QR code.
Android-to-vivo transfer
- Open the migration or phone-clone tool on the new vivo phone.
- Choose Android when asked about the old device.
- On the old phone, open the corresponding transfer tool and scan the QR code displayed by the vivo phone.
- Accept the connection and file-transfer request on both phones.
- Select the categories you want to move, keep both phones near each other and connected to power, and wait for the completion message.
iPhone-to-vivo transfer
- Start the same migration flow on the new vivo phone.
- Choose iPhone when prompted.
- Use the old iPhone to scan the QR code shown on the vivo phone, then approve the transfer request.
- Keep the iPhone unlocked when the tool requests permission and leave both devices undisturbed until the transfer finishes.
The manual specifically warns that data belonging to an app already installed on the new phone may be overwritten. If the new phone contains anything you have created, back it up before starting the migration. Afterward, open the most important apps one by one and verify that contacts, photos, messages, documents and authenticator data are present. Some services require a fresh sign-in or separate export because an app’s private data may not be transferable between operating systems.

If the transfer stops or appears incomplete
- Check that both phones have sufficient battery, are close together and have accepted every permission prompt.
- Restart both phones and run the migration again rather than repeatedly tapping the transfer button while the first session is still active.
- For an app that is missing, reinstall it from the appropriate app store and sign in. Do not assume that an app’s server data and its local files are handled the same way.
- If the new phone now contains duplicate or replaced app data, restore the intended copy from the app’s own backup or cloud service before creating new content.
Will a vivo system update use more storage?
It can, but there is no single number of gigabytes that applies to every vivo model or every update. vivo’s global support FAQ treats post-update storage growth and insufficient storage as model-specific support issues. The space required depends on the phone, the current software build, the update package and temporary files created during installation. A published universal allowance would therefore be misleading.
Check available space before downloading
Open the phone’s storage screen from Settings and inspect free space before selecting an update. Look for large videos, offline downloads, unused apps and messaging attachments. Clear an app’s cache only when you understand what it removes; clearing cache is different from clearing app data, which can sign you out or delete local files.
Keep a margin rather than treating the displayed update download size as the only requirement. Installation can need additional working space while the package is verified and unpacked. Do not expect an update to free space automatically, and do not assume that it will consume a fixed amount after installation.

On supported phones, Smart Upgrade can download an update automatically over Wi‑Fi during idle hours. This is convenient when the phone is usually charging overnight, but review the update notice and available storage first. If you prefer to approve every download, leave automatic upgrading disabled and check Settings > System update manually.

What to do when storage is insufficient
- Back up photos, videos and documents to a trusted destination.
- Remove downloads you can obtain again, such as streamed music or video stored for offline use.
- Uninstall apps you no longer use. If an app cannot be removed, check whether the phone offers a disable or uninstall-updates option instead.
- Review large files and duplicate media in the storage screen.
- Restart the phone and check free space again before retrying the update.
Do not delete system, security, telephony, account or update components merely because their names look unfamiliar. Removing or altering them can prevent normal updates or essential phone functions from working.
If an update fails
- Reconnect to stable Wi‑Fi and make sure the battery is adequately charged.
- Confirm that the phone has more free space than the update screen requests.
- Restart the phone, then check Settings > System update again.
- Keep the original software intact. vivo warns that flashing an unauthorised ROM introduces security risks and can complicate support.
- If the same package repeatedly fails, record the model, software version and error message before contacting vivo Customer service or an authorised service centre.
vivo warranty, service and returns
Warranty terms are geographic. The figures in this table come from vivo India policy pages accessed on 16 October 2026 and apply to products purchased in India and serviced through authorised centres in India.

How to prepare a warranty claim
- Keep the invoice, order confirmation and any warranty registration or e-warranty details.
- Record the IMEI, model and software version from Settings > About phone.
- Back up personal data and remove accounts if the phone will be handed over for service.
- Describe the fault precisely and disclose accidental, liquid or physical damage. Warranty treatment depends on the policy’s exclusions.
- Use an authorised vivo service centre in the country covered by the policy.
A warranty from one country should not be treated as an international promise. If your phone was bought outside India, check the vivo policy for that purchase country before relying on the India durations or replacement window.
Can vivo bloatware be removed?
There is no universal vivo bloatware list. The installed-app set varies by model, country, carrier and software build. vivo China’s official pre-installed-app disclosure covers the first mass-production shipment and notes that the list can change after app or system updates. It advises checking the phone against the model-specific official listing at first use. A China disclosure should not automatically be treated as the list for a phone sold elsewhere.

Identify what is installed on your exact phone
- Write down the model and software version from Settings > About phone.
- Open the official pre-installed-app disclosure for that exact model and sales region, when one is available.
- Compare names and versions after the first update, because the inventory may change after software updates.
- Classify each app as optional third-party software, a vivo utility or a core system component before changing it.
Uninstall, disable or hide safely
For an ordinary third-party app, open its entry from Settings > Apps. If the system offers Uninstall, use that option and confirm that you do not need its local data. When uninstall is unavailable, the phone may offer Disable or a way to hide the icon. A disabled app may still retain some data and can be restored later, while uninstalling can remove local files.
Leave core system, security, update, telephony, account and device-management components alone unless documentation for your exact model explicitly identifies them as removable. Removing a component that another service depends on can break calls, notifications, updates or account sign-in.
Why rooting is a poor first-day solution
Rooting or installing an unauthorised ROM can alter the original software environment and create security risks. vivo specifically warns about unauthorised updates. It can also make troubleshooting and warranty assessment harder, so use the built-in uninstall, disable and hide controls instead of modifying protected system files.

Using App Clone without losing data
Supported vivo phones provide App Clone at Settings > Apps > App clone for compatible sign-in apps. It creates a second local copy so two accounts can be used separately. Availability depends on the app and model.

- Cloned and primary copies use local storage; running both can increase data consumption on the phone.
- Disabling the clone deletes the clone and its data.
- Uninstalling the primary app also deletes the clone and its data.
- Before disabling, uninstalling or migrating, export or back up information that exists only inside the cloned copy.
What to compare when choosing or setting up a specific vivo model
General setup advice is useful, but a meaningful model comparison requires the exact model number and sales region. Check these items instead of relying on a family name alone:

Ask for the complete model designation, country of purchase and current software version before buying accessories or planning a migration. A case, protector, charger, cable or memory card that fits one model may be unsuitable for another, and a printed manual may not match the installed software.
First-week troubleshooting checklist
The phone will not accept a fingerprint
Confirm that a primary PIN, password or pattern is configured under Settings > Security > Screen lock. Re-enrol the fingerprint with clean, dry fingers and keep the primary credential available because the phone may require it after a restart.
The phone says there is not enough space for an update
Open the storage screen, remove large optional files and unused apps, clear only safe caches, restart and retry over Wi‑Fi. Do not delete core system components or assume the update requires only the number shown as its download size.
Old-phone data is missing
Check the migration summary and the original phone. Re-run the transfer if permissions were declined or the connection ended early. For app-specific data, use that app’s own backup and restore process; reinstalling an app does not guarantee that its local files return.
An unfamiliar app appeared after setup
Record the model and software version, then compare the app with the official model-specific pre-installed-app disclosure. Use uninstall, disable or hide only when the phone provides the option and the app is not a core system component.
You need service
Save the IMEI, model, software version, purchase proof and a description of the fault. Use Customer service from Settings > About phone or an authorised centre in the country covered by your warranty policy.
