Use established Pikachu by default. Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu are newly revealed Pikachu characters, but the official announcement gives no battle stats, moves, abilities, availability details or competitive results. Until those facts are published, choosing either new character over Pikachu would be speculation rather than team planning.
The practical verdict right now
If you are planning a team for Pokémon Winds or Pokémon Waves, reserve a slot for Pikachu only if you want a known, established option. Do not replace that plan with Mr. Windychu or Ms. Wavychu on the assumption that a newer design means better performance. Their names and appearance are confirmed; their usefulness in battle is not.

This is a certainty-based recommendation, not a claim that Pikachu will have higher numbers than the newcomers. A reliable team decision requires information that has not been released yet: typing, weaknesses, ability effects, base-stat distribution, movepool, encounter method, level curve, evolution or form rules, and whether each character can actually join the party. None of those comparisons can be made responsibly from a design reveal.

Pokémon’s official announcement describes Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves as all-new entries in the series, planned for simultaneous worldwide release in 2027 exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2. The setting is presented as an open world of islands and ocean where players can team up with Pokémon during the adventure.

The announcement says the latest video showed “some Pikachu with a brand-new look.” It then asks how these Pikachu could be involved in the adventure and says to look forward to future announcements. The two revealed names are Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu.
That wording matters. It confirms an appearance and names, but it does not say that these are regional forms, evolutions, alternate abilities, version exclusives, or even currently playable party members. Calling them “clones” is understandable shorthand for the comparison, but it is not an official gameplay classification.
Known setting and starter context
The same announcement introduces three first partners. Their published details are:
| Pokémon | Type | Ability | Height | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Browt | Grass | Overgrow | 0.3 m | 3.5 kg |
| Pombon | Fire | Blaze | 0.4 m | 6.7 kg |
| Gecqua | Water | Torrent | 0.3 m | 4.3 kg |
Those measurements and abilities describe the announced first partners, not Mr. Windychu or Ms. Wavychu. They provide context for the new games but do not establish how either new Pikachu performs or where it fits in a six-Pokémon party.
Confirmed facts versus unanswered team questions
The evidence currently supports a narrow comparison. Pikachu is an established Pokémon option; the two new characters have been revealed visually and named. Almost every battle-related question remains open.

Why Pikachu is the safer choice today
Its team role is at least knowable
When a Pokémon is already established in the series, players can begin with known expectations about how it is obtained, trained and used in the relevant game. Those details still need to be verified for Winds and Waves, but the species itself is not an unanswered reveal. With Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu, even the basic question “Can I put this character in my party?” is unresolved.

You can plan around evidence instead of appearance
A six-slot team has opportunity cost. Choosing one member means leaving another out, and that decision affects coverage, defensive switches, speed control, status management and the levels at which your team learns important moves. A costume, title or animation cannot tell you whether a character fills a missing role or duplicates one you already have.
There is no basis for declaring a new winner
New designs often trigger predictions that a character must be stronger, rarer or intended as a special reward. None of those assumptions follows from the announcement. Until official numbers and mechanics exist, “Mr. Windychu is better” and “Ms. Wavychu power-creeps Pikachu” are fan theories, not established advice.
How to choose when gameplay information arrives
When official profiles or the finished games provide details, compare all three options in the same order. This prevents a striking design or one impressive move from deciding the entire team.

1. Confirm typing and weaknesses
Record each character’s displayed type or types, then map the weaknesses, resistances and immunities that matter in the game’s actual battle system. A single type may leave a team exposed to common attacks; a dual type may add useful resistances but also create a severe four-times weakness. Do not infer a new typing from a name such as “Windychu” or “Wavychu.”

Abilities can change a Pokémon’s practical role more than a small stat difference. Check the activation condition, whether the effect applies to the holder or the whole field, and whether it works in the story, multiplayer battles or both. Compare the ability with the rest of your planned team rather than judging it in isolation.
3. Compare base-stat distribution, not a single headline number
Look at all relevant stats and the resulting role. High speed may support a first-strike attacker; high defensive values may favor switching and sustained play; mixed offenses can be flexible but may divide training resources. A higher total is not automatically better if the points sit in stats your strategy does not use. The official announcement has not published any such numbers for Mr. Windychu or Ms. Wavychu.
4. Check the complete movepool and timing
List level-up, technical, tutor, egg or other confirmed moves, then note when the useful options become available. A move learned after the main story may be irrelevant to an early-game decision. Also check accuracy, power, priority, side effects and whether the character has the stats to use the move effectively.
5. Verify availability and level curve
A theoretically excellent Pokémon may arrive too late to matter. Compare encounter location, story requirements, one-time limits, version restrictions, gift status and the level at which it joins. Until these details are announced, neither new character can be recommended for an early, mid-game or post-game slot.

6. Investigate evolution and form mechanics
Find out whether Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu are permanent forms, temporary transformations, evolutions, cosmetic variants or separate species. Check whether a form can be changed freely, requires an item or event, and keeps the same moves and ability. The official reveal establishes none of this.
7. Test the fit with your other five slots
Finally, evaluate the candidate as part of a complete team. Ask which threats it handles, which teammates cover its weaknesses, whether it competes for the same training resources, and whether its move options duplicate an existing member. The better individual profile can still be the worse team choice if it creates overlap or leaves a key matchup uncovered.

If you are starting the story immediately
Use the first confirmed party options available in your version and keep a flexible slot open if you are interested in the new Pikachu characters. Do not build the rest of the team around an unconfirmed ability or typing. Once an official encounter method is published, you can decide whether replacing an existing member is worth the training cost.
If you are building a balanced six-Pokémon team
Write down the roles you still need before choosing among the three Pikachu options: an attacker, a defensive pivot, speed support, status control or a particular coverage move. Then fill the slot with the candidate whose confirmed profile solves that problem. If none of the new information answers the role question, established Pikachu remains the lower-risk selection because its identity is not dependent on speculation.
If you care about competitive battles
Wait for legal formats, complete movepools, ability interactions and actual battle data. Story usefulness and competitive value are separate questions, and a character can be excellent in one environment while restricted or ineffective in another. No competitive conclusion is possible for Mr. Windychu or Ms. Wavychu from the reveal alone.

If appearance is your main priority
Choose the character you enjoy using, but label that as a preference rather than a performance verdict. A favorite design is a valid reason to reserve a team slot once the game confirms that the character is obtainable; it is not evidence of superior stats or moves.
Direct answers to the questions players are asking
Is the new Pikachu better than Pikachu?
There is no supported winner yet. The new pair have no published battle profile, so any claim that either is stronger than Pikachu is speculation.
Should I use Mr. Windychu or Ms. Wavychu?
Not until the games or an official profile confirm that they are party members and reveal their mechanics. If you must plan today, use established Pikachu as the known option and revisit the decision when concrete data appears.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAre Windychu and Wavychu playable?
The announcement does not say. It asks how the newly styled Pikachu could be involved in the adventure, which leaves open party use, a story appearance, a non-battle role or another possibility.
What are the new Pikachu’s stats and moves?
No official stats, abilities or moves have been published for either character. Do not treat fan-made numbers, screenshots or predictions as confirmed information.
Is Pikachu still worth using?
Yes, if you value a known Pokémon choice and are willing to confirm its exact implementation in Winds or Waves once game details are available. “Worth using” will ultimately depend on its final stats, movepool, availability and your team’s needs, not on the existence of a newer-looking alternative.
What future announcements need to clarify
A useful comparison will become possible when official information answers these specific questions:
- Are Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu obtainable by every player, or tied to a version, event or limited distribution?
- Can each one enter the party, and at what point in the story?
- What are their types, abilities, base stats and complete learnsets?
- Do they evolve, transform or switch forms, and what triggers that change?
- Are their forms cosmetic, mechanical or both?
- How do their roles differ from established Pikachu in the same game?
- What battle formats permit them, and are there restrictions?
Until those questions are answered, the only defensible team recommendation is the conservative one: treat Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu as intriguing announced characters, not proven upgrades. The official page remains the reference for the current reveal, and its development disclaimer means final gameplay may change before the planned 2027 Nintendo Switch 2 release.
